What's your opinion on Donna Shalala?

in hindsight, firing coker was the logical move but the team went 9-3 in 2005 and was in the national championship discussion until the ga tech loss. he had also just signed a contract extension that september so firing him less than 4 months after that was really not an option.

According to President Shalala's own words (after firing Coker), "Larry deserved another year." Again, history showed us WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY that firing Coker was the correct move. Donna held out more for PR reasons than for football reasons (See Vinn's comments inside my post above). It was exactly what people criticize politicians for; Style over substance. Perhaps that is why so many cannot look past her "liberal elitest" background.

Liberal elitist is a bad thing?
Would you rather have neo **** trailer park trash?

works well for the SEC trophy cases

Are those my only two options??

IMO, yes, liberal elitist is a bad thing, but that's not the discussion for this thread. Donna is a university president. She is bound by law to being a liberal elisist. lol

I would hope every university that prides itself on academics is filled with liberal, intellectual elitists.

I know her and Tano see eye to eye on a lot of things, but I don't think she rises up to the occasion very often. She tends to be a little shortsighted. Although, I guess you could say she's pretty much reached the height of her profession.

Perhaps you'd rather post on the University of Miami med school message boards.

Dee hired Shannon. Players wanted Coker. Donna is loved by alums and hated by football fans. Btw alumni show up to the games. Young alumni section is full. It's the other fans that don't show up. If everyone on here would buy tickets n go to games that place would be rocking. If u care about the school you love Donna. if you care about the football team only and don't give a **** about the school like most of Miami, you hate Donna bc u don't know the duties of a school president.

A dumber post cannot be found anywhere on these boards, and that's quite an accomplishment.

The student section is only 60% full most games. If you know so much about UM,you would realize that they don't have a large alum base and from that small number, an even smaller amount live in the S. Fla area. My daughter just graduated in May. 80% of her class was from out of state and out of country. You think the ever growing number of Chinese students are coming back for games? GTFOOH.

Plus, are you actually saying that liking UM football and the University president are mutually inclusive? Really? So by that logic, I love this country but I supposed to love Obama, or Bush? I can't stand either one.

I felt it was not even worth replying too,,,if this is what UM is putting out there then Donna has work to do in Academics too..

Even tho Vinn put this nonsense in perspective, I feel like piling on. I'll focus on the comment in bold.

First, Nice jab attempt in saying that market-based fans are not smart enough to know what the role of a president is. In a word, FAIL. She is the president of the university. ALL aspects of the university fall under her domain, including that pesky athletic department. You know, the one that generates all that revenue.

You are correct in stating that many of us who are market based fans do not really care about the academic standing of UM. I do not. Im a fan of the sports programs BECAUSE of their ties to the south Florida market. It is those fans that Donna has taken steps to disassociate from. Look at the results of that approach. Its been on full display over the past decade. You ask that we show up every Saturday and make the place "rocking." We say, put a product on the field that would attract us. Cant have it both ways.

Conversely, it is coach Golden's approach, which is the antithesis of Donna's mindset that is leading to a resurgence of the football program. Hmmm??? Coach Golden is reaching out to the local community. Low and behold, season ticket sales are way up this year.

To summarize, UM is a market-based athletic program. When (those liberal elitist types :p ) try to make it otherwise, the program falls apart. If you want a top 50 academic institution with a **** athletic department, go right ahead and root for such. Just know that those of us on the sports message boards who are market based fans are going to go ham on your asses, for we too feel like we've been a part of the building of The U. Because we have!

My kid goes to the U, from California. The fact that there is a "buzz" about the U that reaches the west coast and is focused on the rising stature of the school is certainly part of her role as President of the school. If you dont think attracting big political events/debates/speakers is tied in to her connections you guys are crazy.

In addition, I have met her on campus and heard her speak. She is smart and an impressive force on campus.

The kid wanted to go the U beacuse of Billy Corben (30 for 30) and I wanted him to go because of Donna. (and Al Golden)

Donna is an absolutely great head of the university. She's handled the investigation superbly, and she's made miami the top university in the state per US News Week. That being said, she did start the downfall of the football program. When she took over she wanted to make the school better academically, so she raised the academic standards for incoming freshman athletes to a 2.9 gpa. With this we couldn't recruit as many "thugs." As many see some of our commits can't qualify.
Since you haven't answered, now I am questioning it. High School GPA is the easiest thing in the solar system to get help on. HS teachers who would hold back a star athlete with an honest grade, have to be few and far between. It's easy to give an undeserved grade. Not easy to get an undeserved standardized test score without someone else taking the test for you. From what I have heard (I can't prove it any more than the 2.9 GPA you quote) UM required a minimum 820 SAT AND a minimum 2.5 GPA for athletes. Of the two, I'm guessing the SAT score is the bigger stumbling block.

You mean the revenue that flows right back into athletic department coffers to pay for facilities and scholarships and non-revenue sports and the like, and which doesn't really generate a dime for the overall university at large?

You are correct in stating that many of us who are market based fans do not really care about the academic standing of UM. I do not. What steps, specifically, has Donna taken to dissociate from the casual fan? If you're speaking specifically of the move from the OB to Dolphin Stadium, what, pray tell, were her options? If you mean the move to the ACC from the Big East, I'd say that was a pretty **** good decision, despite all the whining from the fan base.

Conversely, it is coach Golden's approach, which is the antithesis of Donna's mindset that is leading to a resurgence of the football program. Hmmm??? Coach Golden is reaching out to the local community. Low and behold, season ticket sales are way up this year.

If Shalala approved the hire of Golden, why would you assume that Golden's approach is the antithesis of Donnas? This doesn't make much sense.

The problem, as I see it, is that Shalala wants BOTH a good athletic program AND a good academic program. But those casual sports fans who don't care about UM academics see any move that Shalala makes to bolster the academic side as a slap in the face to the athletic side, which isn't the case. They also tend to misplace blame, in part because they largely don't understand the role of a university prez in athletics, in part because of her politics, and in part because of sexism.

Im a bit disappointed that you didnt work "racism" into your rant as well. I guess you needed to hold that one back in case chairman obama's name came up??

She hired Randy Shannon. Seriously, she hired Randy Shannon. Somehow, some way, he was interviewed and someone thought this was a good idea. I can only surmise that from a football only perspective, she has less than no clue.

Just callin' it like I see it. You know full well there have been literally thousands of posts on these boards over the last several years that have called Shalala a dyke, *******, *****, etc, and have generally shown blatant sexism.

I'd give her a B+. Would be an A+, but she loses a half a point for the Athletic Department and for the Medical school problems. Could be lower depending on those ultimate outcomes. The comments against her are somewhat parochial IMO. Overall she's done a good job.

i graduated in 2010 and go to every game in the young alumni section. most of my class was out of state, as well, but the student section was pretty much the only full section there was at the stadium. and really the student alumni base isnt from SFL. the thought never occurred to me since most of my friends from UM arent in miami lol. when i was at UM, it may not have been as asian as i hear it is now but thats what happens when u become a better academic school. my post was saying that most people who like the football team blame the school pres for its downfalls but dont consider the work she has done on the academic side. the common debate ends up being alumni from UM love shalala and the people who just like UM for its athletics dont like her bc of the idea that she doesnt care about sports which is false btw
