What's your opinion on Donna Shalala?

Donna is an absolutely great head of the university. She's handled the investigation superbly, and she's made miami the top university in the state per US News Week. That being said, she did start the downfall of the football program. When she took over she wanted to make the school better academically, so she raised the academic standards for incoming freshman athletes to a 2.9 gpa. With this we couldn't recruit as many "thugs." As many see some of our commits can't qualify.

Republicans hate her, liberals like her, highschool drop-outs and those with correspondence college degrees don't understand why she is trying to improve the University's academic standing which they believe has "weakened" the football program. It's really that simple.

You are the only one making the correllation between the efforts to improve the university's academic standing and the weakening of the football program. I do not see these two as being linked. That said, Donna's actions have been part of the cause of both things, the improved academic standind AND the weakened football program.

Perhaps so far in this thread, but in general uh no. Plenty of fans have made such correlation

Not disputing it, but do you have a link or a source we can see?

Guarantee if Ann Coulter were UM President you'd be excusing all of the things you attack Shalala for.

Not to get into politics, but Ann Coulter is just a disgusting human being. Ugh.

Oops! Too late now.

Not even politically, she's just not a good person.

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." I mean what type of sick person says that?

I'm just hoping a video comes out on her. The one with her, 2 giant black guys, 3 Mexicans, a couple Asians, a few Jews, more than a few Arabs, some farm animals, and not a WASP in sight.

The woman is a rock star. She is to UM presidents as Howard and Jimmy are to UM footbal coaches. Unfortunately, some fools may not realize what we have until she moves on.

President Shalala always provides good debate on the Canes sports boards. I didnt even need to stir the pot on this one. lol

Some rondom thoughts to tie this off:

* I personally have never accused Donna of *intentionally* destroying the football program, but her efforts have led to its demise.

* YES, she has the final interview with new head coach hires. My guess is its mostly a signing off interview of the AD's chosen candidate. That said, she DID meet with Randy, thus earlier post.

* It was Donna's call to allow Coker to stay for the 2006 season. Everyone knew he should have been fired. He was simply outmatched by the job, yet Donna made the call to keep him for PR reasons. That is an epic fail on her part. Again, hiring coker was the right move given the situation, keeping him after the debacle he made of the program in four short seasons because she needed to save face (for whatever reasons) was simply the wrong move IMO.

* I think Donna has done a fastantic job with the University as a whole. I also think she sort of initailly left the athletic department to Paul Dee, but when things started going south, it appears that Donna got more actively involved. That is when we started seeing candidates like Al Golden surface, also when we started with the upgraded facilities projects, etc...

* No, I did NOT graduate from UM. And **** you for raising the point. You are now exactly the same as all of our small, college town rivals who say the same thing. THE THING that sets UM apart from every other university in the nation (save perhaps USC), is that the Miami Hurricanes sports teams are market teams, not campus teams. If this were not the case, why would all of our fanbase hold the expectation that the elite level local talent stay home to play their college ball. So, I say SHAME ON YOU, MISTER POST #52 MAN!! In an effort to defend your political fave, you've managed to disparage the bulk of the life long Canes fans.

* In the final analysis, I think Donna left the Athletic Department stuff to Paul Dee and his crew primarily because Donna had bigger fish to fry at the time. If anything, I'd say she was nominally guilty of some willful ignorance. I think its easy to see why. When she came on board, both our baseball and football teams had just won the national championship. It makes sense that it was of low priority at the time.

I don't think it was intentional, but she is fine with 7-6 seasons as long as no bad press is attached to UM.*

All major hires, from the academic to the athletic have to run through her.

If it wasn't for the constant replaying of the FIU brawl, Coker would still be here. She had to sacrifice someone, to keep her "reputation" clean.*

From the academic side, yes she has done wonders. But these boards are dedicated to UM athletics with a strong focus on football. She has been a disaster to UM football. The ones praising her for the academic rise, should be honest and admit that the decade long decline has been on her watch. Coaches, AD's and players have come and gone. The mediocrity has remained and it's name is Shalala.

I wonder how much traffic a UM academic site would have? Warren Sapp said it best. Wake him the next time 50,000 peopel show up for a Biology experiment. The reason MOST players go to college is to play ball. Yes some want a degree, and good for those that want it and earn it. But all the other University presidents see through the charade and allow dumb asses to play ball and help win games. Shalala has said it herself that she wants UM to be the Harvard of the south. How many 5 star ballers go to play for Harvard?
Like I said, she is totally fine with 7-6 as long as the press is positive. As for those claiming she has been so strong and so good for UM during this investigation, I ask how? In what way? She is in total cover HER *** mode. She knows this is her last gig and she is tryong to save HER reputation. Those of you that can't see beyond her snake charm suffer from head in **** syndrome. She is corrupt, she has surrounded herself with cronies that have swindled millions of dollars from the med school donations. She has never once stood up and took responsibility for the mess that the UM med school is in , or the athletic mess. She introduced her buddy Barry Alvarez to Nevis Shapiro and he lost a lot of money because of Shalala. I could go on but I think it's clear how I feel. Let he be dean of student affairs. Let her be an ambassador to foreign countries to support enrollment. Anything, but justy keep her away from the goings on at the Hecht.*

In the final analysis, the evidence is clear. The football team has been stuck in a decade long decline and she has run out of excuses and others to blame.

in hindsight, firing coker was the logical move but the team went 9-3 in 2005 and was in the national championship discussion until the ga tech loss. he had also just signed a contract extension that september so firing him less than 4 months after that was really not an option.

According to President Shalala's own words (after firing Coker), "Larry deserved another year." Again, history showed us WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY that firing Coker was the correct move. Donna held out more for PR reasons than for football reasons (See Vinn's comments inside my post above). It was exactly what people criticize politicians for; Style over substance. Perhaps that is why so many cannot look past her "liberal elitest" background.

shannon didn't go 9-3 the year that he signed his extension. he went 7-5 and lost to usf in the last game of the season.
