Where is the rest of the play? Just because he line up over the slot doesn't mean he is playing man to man. He be redirecting him and dropping back to cover his zone. This isn't flag football.

It doesn't matter if he is in zone. He is still a liability in space, period. He is a 265-270 DE after 2 major knee surgeries. OC's get paid lots of money to know this and I'm sure they're telling their qb's if he drops in zone, that's your read. Throw there, period.

So you would have taken Green out and put in who?

well with 4 WRs we could always put another DB in teh game

then theres the issue of Shayon Green being completely out of position as a 3-4 OLB. the dude is a 4-3 strong side DE (and a ****ty one at that). coaches are complete *** hats.

Yeah, but UVA was running read options off that formation. On that they play they actually ran the ball for 4 yards.
D'onofrio was actually correct in leaving Shayon out there.
They could have gone Cover 1 and brought a Safety up to cover the slot and put Green in the box and dared UVA to pass.

Or at the top of the screen they should have run-pass option. If the OLB at the top of the screen comes into the box throw a smoke screen behind the LOS where they have 2 WRs to our 1 DB and that's a nice chunk of yardage to be had.

If the OLB stays out wide with the 2 WR set up top, the read option should work as well. They have 6 in the box to our 5. That could also be a big running play if they get a hat on a hat.

Looking at that is so frustrating. Really, no matter what UVA does here they should get a big play and Doritos personnel, and playcalling put us at a disadvantage here across the field. Why are we running base defense on 2nd 5 and it looks like we're also running cover-2? This is just bad all around defensively.

its actually funny to me at this point. I mean what in the **** do these clowns expect to get from that alignment?

One huge issue I have with Golden/Doritos coaching style is that they coach scared. They're still calling games like they're still at Temple in a money game against Ohio State or something. Like they're gonna get out-athleted if they call a game too aggressive.

They choose coverage 9 times out of 10 over an aggressive blitz. I mean, look at what we have in that screenshot. We have three 300-pounders rushing the passer and dropping 8 in coverage. I can't tell for sure, but that looks like Pierre, Renfrow and Luther Robinson on the DL. How do you expect to get a pass rush with three DTs rushing the passer? 2nd 5 in today's game is a passing down and we have our base defense in like this is 1980s Big Ten football or some ****.

Where's the aggression? Where's the balls? They coach scared. Afraid to give up the big play so instead they let teams dink and dunk their way down the field picking up 8-10 yards a completion hoping to tighten up once the opposing team marches into the redzone. **** is pathetic.

Couldn't have said it better, it's at the point it's comical. Dropping eight with 300 pounders rushing qb. Innovative stuff.

So when we come out running more nickel and dime you'll be praising Al for a great adjustment ? It won't be " about **** time you make a basic adjustment, but it took 4 years to make it"?

The D will be better next year , not because of more talent but more to do with adjusting their scheme . Fans have been ****ing about the lbs on the field all year, then after the season Al says " we need to run more nickel and dime next year". No **** ?

Why did it take a full season to figure that out, especially when your cb are your strength?

That's proof alone stupid fans had more sense than a pro making 2 million a year. It's basic high school football sense , that's concerning .

Btw, you have to be a troll or related to Golden.

Did this fool just say we won't have better talent this year?

Yes, he really said that. The defense getting better won't be because of talent getting older and gaining experience and having more of it. It will be because the stubborn staff has heard the rumblings from the fans to add nickel and dime defense as if they had never heard of such a thing.

You know, anyone with a lick of football knowledge knows nickel and dime not being used is what held the defense back. It had nothing to do with Green, Cornelius, Highsmith, Renfrow, Rodgers and company being the Senior group. Can't wait to see all of those ballers on Sunday playing in their Nickel and Dime schemezzz.

Cribby for da DC! Fiah da corches and change da schemezzz!

This is why you are a joke. First you complained, because all of the dbs we had were listed as better options in pass coverage than a 250lb LB. Then you list out the bad talent that was put on the field instead of the other potential options. I'll say it again. I'll take an inexperienced db to play pass coverage over a slow LB who is not physically capable and makes just as many mistakes as the inexperienced db and those mistakes are compounded because his physical ability is not sufficient for where they have him playing.

The way you explained is dead on, and it's just that simple. I wish these cult guys knew that . Like I said earlier , most times we're out schemed before the snap.

Personnel and disguising is more of a problem than talent, It doesn't matter how much talent you have if the players are in a bad position in pre snap.

Many felt Ryan Mayes wasn't worth a scholarship. We've heard that in the past about guys who have played well (Jenkins comes to mind). Good to see him earning some praise though obviously it doesn't mean much now.

True......, but we heard the same regarding players like Larry Hope. Earl Moore was nick named the 'The Bull' and so forth. And then there is the legend himself in Kendall Tompkins......

Agree with this. Like hearing he's playing well in spring but will hold judgment until summer

He 's less of a liability then some green db who probably doesn't know what zone he is responsible for. Who do you think those OC's who get paid a lot of money go after first? The green db!

That is what actually happened on that play. Armbrister stayed out as did Green. It was a read option all the way. The QB optioned to the RB when he saw Armbrister bite. That play ended up getting 4 yards on a 2nd and 5.
Not sure how adding a Nickel would have helped in this case.
What you Nickel and Dime proponents fail to realize is that teams don't always necessarily throw out of a spread formation.
This particular play was a 2nd and 5. Giving up 5 yards on 1st down was the problem that put this defense behind the chains making play calling basically pick your poison after that.
If you nickel on that play then you theoretically become more vulnerable against the run. If you keep your stiff OLB your vulnerable against the pass.
But that particular play D'onforio techincally had the right personnel since it ended up being a run. Maybe he could have had a more athletic OLB out there to play the run and the pass. Basically it boils down to not having the right personnel. Not whether we should have ran a nickel instead of base defense or whatever. Maybe if we had safeties that had good range he could have called a cover 1 and rolled up the safety on the slot and moved the OLB in to put 6 in the box.
This year they should have more options due to better personnel. Safeties should provide better range in coverage. Also better in run support. Our OLB's should be better in space than Green was. Pass rush from 3 and 4 man fronts should improve allowing more aggressive coverage schemes.

Yeah, like our lbs know their zones , lol

The lb unit has been blowing the most coverages the last two years, especially TC and Armbrister . Cornelius almost cost us the Wake game on the wheel route up the right sideline . He constantly blows man and zone coverages.

You're making no sense, but keep throwing excuses out .

They go after the green db because nobody else is dumb enough to regularly have a 270lb DE who's on the slow side line up on a WR. I'm not one to pile on the coaches, but the approach on D needs to change.

What are you talking about? First it was that we are putting our LBs out to cover slot receivers one on one, WRONG! Then it was Green is liability in space more so then our green DBs, WRONG! Now it's our LBs suck and constantly blow their assingments? Yes, I'm making no sense.

More nickel and dime packages please!

First off, Shayon was in this system as long as the DBs on the team with him. Secondly, didn't he come in as a DE out of high school?

Even if he is a senior, the DBs who Doritos chose to keep on the bench know as much, if not more, about coverage than Green. You don't think Green was as "green" to dropping in coverage as our freshman or sophomore DBs on top of the fact that he was unathletic as ****?

Or Williams could just get a young DB ready to play. What other teams in America are having 260 lb players lined up like that?

No deal. I also dont think that would fix the problem. People keep putting this on Dorito but Al Golden is a defensive coach.

Even Saban has had a dose of reality and is transitioning to more nickel and dime stuff.

You can't trot out these massive front 7s and stay in a base 3-4 alignment when teams are splitting out 4 or 5 wide.

It's the behavior of a severely mentally challenged or stubborn individual.
