Wonder what type [more Gattis hate]

Randy Shannon was an excellent defensive coordinator. Do we think Randy was a bad DC now?
No he wasn’t. He had an overwhelming talent advantage and ran 4-3, Cover 2 all
day every day. If he was a great DC, then he would’ve have shown it in his other stops after UM. He hasn’t.

I agree it is weird that we aren't playing to the strengths of our QB more. Tua dolphin fans are happy that Mikey boy is going to put him in positions to be successful. I think that has generally proven to be a skill of successful coaches.

With that said, Mario has revitalized our program and even if I disagree with his preference for how to do things, I'm not going to be a negative nelly all year hoping to be proven right. Root for the team. If we lose games let's hope he adjusts.

Unfortunately, he probably will just want to recruit better players for his scheme and we might max out as a Harbaugh Michigan team in an easier conference. However, we've been such a joke for so long, that if that is what it takes for us to get better I'm all for it. In ten years we can re-evaluate when his contract ends.

If a coach isn't learning as the year goes on and adjusting I think that is a recipe for disaster. I hope any Miami can adjust as they learn new information. I don't consider that "learning on the fly" either, that is just a part of the job. I think you're characterizing the argument of the guy you responded to
Was Randy an excellent coordinator or was his team so talented that it was impossible to ***** up? His post Miami DC performances have been very mediocre.

It’s like saying Coker was a great head coach.

Harbaugh was basically on the verge of getting fired until he re did his deal that allowed for a lower buyout

I believe cribby said it best - you dont need a flea flicker to finally get some separation against inferior teams
The flea flicker last week was more to put on tape that we will throw when Anez Cooper comes in as a TE. We had run out of that formation repeatedly during the game. You run that play and now future opponents can't just assume run there.

After Saturday, either 75% of this board is going to eat crow and suck a d!ck if Gattis lights it up, or we’re going to run out a Broyles Award winner before the conference slate kicks off.

What a time to be alive.
I desperately want the offense to come alive and light up the scoreboard. I’ll gladly eat crow. It’s just that we’ve seen this before. Maybe this time it’s not the same result?

Meh, I watch 3-4 games at a time minimum each time slot every week and it's not uncommon at all for teams to run trick plays vs inferior opponents even when the game isn't as close as our game was with So Miss.

We didn't need the flea flicker for separation. There was separation throughout the game. TVD missed it cuz he was locking on to receivers and not coming off reads..
If they were trying to use the flea flicker to get separation for the wide receivers, they certainly picked a weird formation to use it. They had two tight ends plus Cooper in the game as a third tight end for that play. They only had one receiver and one tight end in the pattern. It was open for Smith in the middle of the field and Mallory deep down the sideline on the boundary side.

We ran a flea flicker for a reason. It was because they were blowing up the run , getting pressure on Tvd and even when Tvd had time guys weren’t getting open. You rcan meh that all you want but separation has been an issue all through camp and even in the season. Our one big play over the top was a flea flicker. That’s playing Bcu and S Miss. That’s why I’ve said we need more space and less congestion with formations. Lashlee had guys outside the hashes which put pressure on the defense vertically and horizontally. Which opens up the middle of the field and makes the Rpo more effective.

It's no secret we lack in the WR group. I'm not denying that. We also don't have to dig deep into every single thing that happens on the field. I saw So Miss's safeties(and entire defense really) constantly cheating forward on every play. The flea flicker looked like a great call to counter their safeties taking 3 steps forward every single snap.

Maybe there is more to it, maybe there isn't. This board has a tendency to make things way bigger than they need be and I feel that's no different with the analyzing of the flea flicker. We got people in here acting like calling a flea flicker is really opening up the bag of tricks when it's an extremely basic play. I've watched Lincoln Riley for years now call more complex trick plays against terrible teams when the games were already out of hand.

Exactly‼️‼️ Couldn't have said it better

Richt was suffering cognitive issues.

Gattis is a different guy from Richt and Enos.Watch 2019 Michigan’s offense. There are LOTS of passing concepts he ran we haven’t seen and Shea Patterson isn’t fit to hold TVD’s jock strap.
How people feel about Richt now is completely different. At the start of 2016 he was "rejuvenated" and going to turn Kayaa into a 1st Rd draft pick.

I have more confidence in Gattis for sure - but he also had more horses on Offense outside of QB. Nico Collins & Donovan Peoples-Jones are now starting NFL WR's. His OL - Cesar Ruiz (1st RD) Jaylen Mayfield (2nd RD) James Hudson (4th RD) was more talented. RB's Hassan Haskins (4th RD) & Zach Charbonnet (Possible Day 2) were more talented.

I'm just always of the opinion players > coaches. Concepts are great - but without the players to run it, it doesn't mean much.

This "we're just holding back" has a very 2016 Mark Richt vibe to it. History repeats itself all the time.

That being said, pack this offense with Day 1 & 2 guys and it'll look A LOT more explosive. With Parrish/X as you RB1/WR1 - what exactly are people expecting?
I mean I see offenses with less then X & Parrish doing more. So I expect more.

There were guys who got separation on Saturday. On the Brashard Smith terrific catch, Keyshawn was wide open down the right sideline and TVD forced it to the middle of the field on a free play.

The flea flicker was set up nicely after them going three and out and with excellent field position. Just showed a little wrinkle.

There are complimentary plays in this offense. You can see it in the formations we ran on Saturday. Was the game ever really in doubt? It wasn't after 5 minutes into the third and it was over 2 minutes later off the flea flicker.

I hope you are right, but I have a hard time expecting that. I've seen a lot of stubborn coaches do the same thing over, and over, and over again, thinking it will work once the players get it right. In the end, they get fired and go somewhere else for rehab, usually under a coach that knows that side of the ball better than they do.

We need to see more, and in a hurry, or this whole thing is going to fall apart. I want Mario to succeed here, so he'd better get Gattis to adapt to the talent he has, not the talent he wishes he had, or might have someday.
Its game 3

WTF

Not defending Shannon, but he had overwhelming talent near the end of his tenure as DC? In 2006 Miami finished #13 in scoring defense, #7 in total defense, #4 in rush defense, #3 in yards per rush? In 2005, Miami was #4 in scoring defense, #4 in total defense, #1 in pass defense, #23 in rush defense. Butch's games were long gone.

He gets maligned for being a bad head coach and a quirky guy. All the legitimate weaknesses and points. I wouldn't say he was a great DC. He certainly was not creative. He was a good one. He did a decent job as co-DC at UF. Okay at UCF. Verdict is out at FSU, but they look improved defensively.
