Time for Robby Washington to step up at CB

Brown should have stayed here and played with his bro. He jumped ship to go play for a sorry team. He could be starting here right now.

Cormani also screwed us over. And he played us well. Instead of going after another top flight corner, we thought we had him in the bag. Then he jumped ship and it was too late. That left a glaring hole in that CB class and we are seeing the effects of it right now. I guess he got the last laugh even though he is trash.
We got the last laugh on Cormani, he has a trash work ethic and will never develop at this level because of that. And Because he’s not a worker, those types are usually cancers in the locker room. We are way better off without him.

My point was he screwed us by not giving us time to find a replacement. I agree he should not be here. But he still left a hole with his antics.

Damari's brother excelled at getting called for PI.

D$ and Peter have said many times the hardest players to get out of the portal are CB's. Come on man!!!

Other experts here said CBs don’t win or lose football games…be careful what we believe here 😎

Cormani was a full high school recruiting class and multiple portal opportunities ago.

We ride with what we have, but they need to create solutions now.

Multiple games worth of missed tackles, bad angles, lazy play, inability to locate the ball or play motion on receiver and numerous pass interference penalties on incomplete 4th and long plays tell me very different. His issues all come from his fundamentals and his engagement. That's an issue. A serious one. I'll take Hill over him and he's more of what you explained. Nowhere near perfect but he's at least present...
if your taking Hill over him you would be losing alot of games.

DP Jr is probably our best outside cb having to play nickel in the slot all year.

If they are smart and moving him back outside you will see the difference.

THE WHOLE DEFENSE SEEMS TO HAVE ISSUES WITH MOTION...seems to be a coaching problem.

Hes been sub par at nickel but i honestly think he has played out of position at that spot ..considering he didnt play that last year..and played outside over guys that are borderline nfl players currently.

Last year Davis and Couch were available as punching bags. That is the only reason why he was able to go unscathed. He never looked like OJ at any point last season.
A lie dont care who tells it.

Performance in Coverage: Porter Jr. stands out with the highest coverage grade among his peers at 80.2. He was targeted 26 times, yielding only 12 receptions (46.2% completion rate) for 114 yards, showing excellent coverage efficiency.

Effectiveness When Targeted: Porter Jr. maintained one of the lowest NFL passer ratings against at 58.8, a testament to his exceptional coverage ability and minimal yardage allowed. Porter Jr. also does not get tested as much as his peers, he is a technique monster and an underrated tackler.

Other notes:

Miami’s second highest-graded tackler in the secondary with more than 200 snaps. Grade of 82.5 per PFF.

Missed one tackle against Miami of Ohio and did not miss another tackle the rest of the 2023 season, including the bowl game.
The best-graded games were against Clemson and the bowl game against Rutgers. Missed the FSU game with an injury. Had best tackling game was against Texas A&M where he played in the slot and outside, he was also asked to blitz this game and hurried the QB twice while blitzing.

Held Evan Steward to 2 catches and 18 yards receiving on 5 coverage snaps when he lined up against him.

Highest graded corner in coverage for Miami 80.2 grade, 2nd best coverage game on the team (James Williams is #1 with a grade of 85.5)

Targeted 5 times in the Clemson game and allowed only two receptions, 1 pass breakup.

Targeted 4 times and allowed 1 catch for 6 yards in the bowl game vs Rutgers.

Devontez Walker had one of the biggest games of his college career vs Miami in 2023. He caught 132 yards and 3 TD’s against the Canes. Only two of those catches and 18 of those yards were on Daryl Porter Jr. Drake Maye avoided Daryl all game.

OJ and Porter on the outside.
Meesh at the nickel.
Markeith playing the field, Patterson playing the box safety.

Put Harris in on short yardage situations.
Hill plays in the dime or if we need a break for one of the outside corners.

Pray.

Here is our blueprint. We can’t cover a soul down the field. There is ZERO reason for Jaden Harris to be in the football game in an obvious passing situation. He can’t cover and he can’t tackle. Other than that, he’s great. Let Williams see if he can cover someone.

Agreed. Looking at the depth chart, it is scary how thin we are at CB. We lose one more starter and we are hosed. We will also see Mooyang - a walk on - get some action this week. From a small sample size, he seems decent and players speak well of him. This might be his Rudy moment.
Myles MOOYOUNG HAS APICK THIS SZN. LOL

He is just as good as Stafford and Roby this early honestly. Hes not the typical walk on he is a group of 5 Mac/c usa type talent.

They screwed up not taking Antoine Jackson or any other cbs (Jackson starts at UCF) i guess that was to appease Damari Brown (rumors) or to save NIL money. They thought Hill would be enough which i knew wouldnt...need one more cb and when Savion Riley high tailed it should of brought in another safety...even if it was a g5 starter just for depth purposes.

Id like to see Mack before Robby .. rumor is Mack is just as polished as OJF (both STA grads). Mack was hampered by an injury early on, but is 100% now!!

There is ZERO reason for Jaden Harris to be in the football game in an obvious passing situation.

Same could be said about Mauigoa. QBs seem to look for whoever he’s supposed to be covering. Or if he spies the QB and the QB leaves the pocket and runs, he gets juked out of his shoes and misses the tackle. He’s a big reason a 6 yard gain turns into a 17 yard gain. I honestly hate being critical of kids (and yes, McCormick aside they are still mostly kids) because I can see they are giving their all, but the plain truth is he’s not a UM caliber starting LB. He’s been a liability on both passes and runs. Maybe it’s just confirmation bias, but almost every time I see a missed tackle within 4 yards of the LOS, I rewind the film to see who it is. Inevitably it is #1.

IMO the MLB has to be the best tackler on the team. If he isn’t the fastest, then the MLBs high football IQ can help mitigate that. Quarterman is a good example- he was not the fastest LB but he had terrific instincts and a high football IQ. Mauigoa unfortunately does not.

I agree 100% but guidry has said it and his actions show he doesnt like to rotate his safeties. He has no choice now but he says they are supposed to make calls but for some reason everyone wide open, so I dont know
guidry speaking BS smhh ..dk why yall believe what he saying

He definitely should be playing outside. But that doesn't excuse him for all the **** he's been doing. Again it's not cause he just constantly gets beat. It's he's just completely not interested. That's why I take Hill and I'd disagree on who you're better off with. But we're allowed to disagree. No pressure in that.

I think it is funny that yall think the solution to our DB problem is finding a way to get all 3 of our safeties on the field more lol. Wasn't everyone just saying they want Meesh and Harris to be benched? lol. Moving Meesh to Nickel maybe fine a coupe times a game, not as our main nickel defense though. He's our best safety.

Imo the immediate solution with Richard being out for season is putting Porter back outside. It clearly hasn't worked having him in the nickel, period. Regardless what the reason, we have evidence last year that he performed well outside - better than Richard and Hill have been this year. Imo it is better to get our top 2 CBs on the field in their strength - especially if we are going to predominantly be playing man coverage - and then play the weakest CB in the Nickel, and figure some **** to help him out. That is better than having a worse Outside CB and Porter playing poorly in the nickel and both needing help. We should all hope Porter can move outside and return to his 2023 form.

So for me until Damari Brown gets back and can take over the starting nickel spot, to me it should just be an open competition at nickel. First we should also probably be just playing a bit more base defense with like Pruitt/Bobby Washington as the 3rd LB or running 5 man Dlines or something cause I think we need to go all in on pass rush and stopping the run. We are still allowing teams to run way too easily on us at times. But in pure 3 CB packages, imo it needs to be

OCB: OJ and Porter
Nickel: Hill

Once Damari returns OJ has his spot and if Porter has elevated his play by being outside again he's the guy with Hill subbing in when needed.

D$ and Peter have said many times the hardest players to get out of the portal are CB's. Come on man!!!

Huge respect for D$. But there is an 84 page thread on the Portal board more or less hosted by @Memnon which listed plenty of DB portal options including CBs. We brought in Meesh and Savion Riley at S and Hill at CB. There were a ton of other names that were equal or better options.

Guidry in his Monday presser said they started off the season down men at DB. He said it like it was someone else’s fault. I have been a huge fan of Guidry but that almost sounded like Gattass’s excuses about the O when he was OC. **** those excuses. He should have fixed that roster.

What ****es me off is it’s clear we have a championship offense. The reason we’ll lose games this season lies solely with Guidry, and everyone on here … EVERYONE … knew we were thin and lacking talent at DB.

Play Zay. If Mack and Day are healthy, start getting them folded in. Definitely work Robby in. They will make costly mistakes. But our current players are already making costly mistakes. At least the younger guys will learn and grow from them. Relying on JAGs just because they’re veterans is a certain path to failure.
