The Battle for Broward

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, Miramar and Pembroke Pines were small suburbs of Hollywood and on the outer southwestern fringes of Broward. I went to McArthur in the early 70's and we had kids from what was considered West Hollywood at the time. I lived on Taft and 71st Ave and had a pretty good ride to get to school. Kids east of 441 and north of Sheridan went to Hollywood Hills - considered "high rent" at the time. University Drive was considered the sticks. Hollywood Sportatorium was considered in the middle of nowhere. McArthur football sucked in those days for 2 reasons - we had a state championship level wrestling program that got all the attention (10 or 12 straight) and the HC refused to play underclassmen. So we said f**k him and we stayed with our optimist teams until we were juniors.
Always dope hearing how things have changed over the years. I can imagine everything west of 441 looks night and day different now.

Alumni....THE MAC. Yea we apparently had a big time Wrestling history. If MCA keeps most of their kids they would be a main stay in the playoffs. Their ids typically get raided by Chaminade, Miramar,Hallandale, and any other privates. They have a coach now that brings kids in...and now they are back on the track. Hollywood Hills has been sorry as f*ck since the early 2000s since i was in high school and nothing has changed lol
Speaking of Hollywood Hills in the early 2000s, I KNOW you know this name. Tavares Spillman. Played football and basketball at Hills. Was from Dania. Called him "Man-Man." One of the best athletes I've ever seen down here. Including the guys who made it to the pros. Got sidetracked by grades and a rough life. Literally just saw him riding by on a bicycle in Dania an hour ago. Your post immediately made me think of that. lol

Absolutely on both!

Hills sucked in my day. Bunch of entitled punks. Hated them high rents. LOL

Naw you didnt just see him. Bryant Mcfadden was a 5star cb and top 3 db in the nation for us...and Man Man is the only dude i think beat him consistently. He should have been a 5 star guy..he played basketball too. I was a freshman on varsity then when he played.
Around that time the big names in Hollywood was..B-MAC, Spillman, Travis Daniels (LSU, NFL), and before Broderick Nelson (Michigan state).

Saban closed on Trav and Broderick. He BEEN in Broward

My unc was on that Hollywood Hills football team that won the state championship in the early 70s. Don't know what year. Ended up playing at [redacted] in [redacted]ville and then a couple years with the Seahawks. They got that one state title and its been downhill for the last 45 years since. lmao

You got it...right where Oakwood is and Dave n Busters...that area is Liberia. It feeds kids to South Broward.
Did in my day as well. In '79, I bought a little house in the 24 hundred block of Thomas - 2 streets off Sheridan and east of 95 and I was fairly sure Liberia was basically across the street. On the north side of Sheridan east of 95 was a large undeveloped area that we used to ride 3 wheelers in - 4 wheelers weren't invented yet! LOL Oakwood and Dave and Busters must be in that area that was once vacant land.

I remember that team. It was surprising to us that not only did they win that championship but their steep decline as well.

Yup. I was outside right there on Dania Beach Boulevard, and he rode by. Hadn't seen him in an at least a year or two. A lil heavier, but still looks like he could dunk on everybody. Broderick and Travis were at South Broward and got alot of the shine and ended up going to big colleges, but Man-Man was that DUDE. EVERYBODY knew it. Even them. He was a natural. At basketball and football. He had NFL talent without question.

And yeah I remember Nick Saban recruiting both Broderick Nelson and Jimel Cofer to Michigan State in the late 90s. Broderick works at Nova HS now if I'm not mistaken. Jimel is in Texas. He has a son that is a LEGIT D1 basketball prospect. I think they're in Austin or one of those major Texas cities.

I was a summer intern with the Dolphins one year (during the Sparano years, '08 I think) when Travis Daniels was with them (funny enough, my cousin, from Carver Ranches and played at Chaminade, was ALSO in camp with them that same summer). So Hollywood was in Davie in full force. lol

But Man-Man is arguably the best I've ever seen in person. If he was at St. Thomas in those years (or even South Broward) instead of at Hollywood Hills, he woulda been a household name EVERYWHERE.

That was shortly after integration. Hollywood Hills had just opened in 1969 (nice) maybe? They got alot of those Attucks HS kids that I talked about in an earlier post. Attucks HS during the 60s was FULL of talent. Almost like Central and Northwestern is now. But when they integrated schools, they turned it into a Junior High and sent the kids in Dania and Liberia to Hollywood Hills and South Broward.

So Hills got a lot of kids who initially woulda been on some REALLY good Attucks teams and once Nova (who was St. Thomas before St. Thomas when it comes to recruiting kids in Broward) started poaching the Liberia and Dania kids, Hills got bad fast and never recovered.

I'm not surprised Broward been had Ballers, but since most of these kids didn't go to punk *** STA. They didn't fit the Miami Hurricanes mold for what Broward Players should look like. Downvote all you want, but until you put some respect on Broward name these kids will go elsewhere. I played Football with Multiple D1 Athletes Miami was never on campus. Not once. Broward or Die. Ain't no cowards in Broward.
They talk **** about broward and how much better Dade is and then are shocked why they don’t want to play for Miami.

BINGO!!! These kids ain't dumb man I talk to them daily. Miami is dropping the ball period. These kids will leave South Florida to be treated like Kings somewhere else and I don't blame them.

John Dunlap. Played at NC State. Was in camp with the Jets and the Dolphins that year as a WR. He's a Dixon by blood, which is our relation to all the Bronlees as the Dixons and Brownlees are all from that same South Georgia town and intermarried in those days.

Man-man was a MF'ing athlete!
Played against him in football and basketball.

Jerry Johnson (linebacker) was another beast from Hollywood Hills. I saw the kid bench press 455 in high school.

Some of Hollywood Hills best athletes were actually East Davie kids.

Yeah man. Played LB/WR at Chaminade. You know Guandolo rarely throws the ball tho. But him and Tae Darby went up there together. There was a TON on South Florida kids at NC State back then. Doc Holliday (now Marshall Head Coach) got a **** ton of kids from down here to go there, and then was one of Urban's lead recruiters at UF to get all those kids on that title team.

I think Manny Diaz might've been at NC State for a year or so while Dunlap was there. That's where I met Russell Wilson. Dunlap told me they had a kid redshirting that was a crazy person when it came to working out. Said he was gonna be good. He was right. lol
