The Battle for Broward

Most of the Carver Ranches, Hallandale, Liberia/Hollywood, Dania folks rep Broward because they're moving around from one to the other often. Those neighborhoods have a lot of connections. Those are very old communities. Like the black ones in Fort Lauderdale and Pompano.

They are all black communities started when people were working on the old Flagler railroad or farming near it. That's why so many of those communities are between 95 and the railroad. Flagler, Model Land Company and other employers wanted black workers living as near to work as possible. My family has been in Dania/Liberia for over 100 years.

Before integration, the black folk from all those neighborhoods (and even black neighborhoods as far south as Ojus, which is near present-day Aventura) I just mentioned went to Attucks High in Liberia. So they have ties to each other as Broward residents and as older neighborhoods.

The Miramars and Pembroke Pines, and others of Southwest Broward, as Gogeta4 stated, are younger communities, often comprised, as Carol City was, of people who moved from Overtown and Liberty City areas of Miami usually from projects or apartments to single-family homes. So they have more of a tie to Dade.

I grew up in Dania. Played football for Northeast in Liberia. Played basketball for Washington Park in Carver Ranches. And hung out with family in the black part of Hallandale. I also went to school in Miami for a time at Bunche Park in Opa Locka. Never considered myself from Dade even though it was that close. Broward all the way.

I think of black Broward as 4 distinct groups.
- Southwest Broward (Miramar, Pines, etc)
- South Broward (Carver Ranches, Hallandale, Liberia, Dania)
- Fort Lauderdale (Sistrunk area, Lauderhill, over by Fort Lauderdale HS, all the stuff near the Swap Shop, by Piper and Boyd Anderson, etc.)
- North Broward (Deerfield and Pompano).

Of the 4, the only one that would make sense to rep Dade county is Southwest Broward. The other three really have few ties to Dade county. They're their own separate things. Even from each other to a certain extent. Somebody in Miramar prolly has no lived experience in Pompano.

Gotta remember, Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, even before the population surge of the last few decades, are three BIG *** COUNTIES. lol

**** yeah bruh, me and my cousins say that all the time. I don't what I'm more thankful for, them leaving the woods or making the decision to come here. My family's make-up is **** near the same. My Ol' Girl's parents were from across the FL-GA line from each other. My pops' pops was from Alabama and his mom is from Ocilla, GA. A couple of my homeboys from Carol City are Andersons, and yup their family's from SC...

See. It's like clockwork. Follow the last names. They usually lead back to a plantation somewhere in the Deep South or the Caribbean. The last names usually tell the story.

This is all demographics.

As more AA’s move up north, due to housing costs rising, growing Hispanic populations, and gentrification, you will see more and more of this.

It’s inevitable. Just like LA was once fairly Caucasian, the demographics of Miami Dade will eventually change as well.

This was discussed on this board way back in 2014 and got down voted a lot but it was the truth and still is. Miami Dade AA population is moving north.

Not only that, it’s also about percentages and distribution. You need critical masses of kids, parents, schools and teams to build talent.

If the population is 80% Hispanic and into futbol, and the Hispanic/White/AA kids who are into football are spread out, then the interest and community involvement disappear.

I’m in my mid 30’s. Miami was majority white in my lifetime, now it is overwhelmingly Hispanic (and I’m one of them, of course). To project a declining AA population isn’t difficult.

I've lived in Broward county my whole life (minus a four year stint in Orlando for school). I grew up in what is now considered "East Pembroke Pines" but at the time was the westernmost reaches of Broward County. I now live in Hollywood (South Broward is the local high school for my neighborhood). The football talent has vastly changed in the 20 years since I was in high school. Back then, there were only a couple of schools pumping out D1 players. STA and Gibbons were recruiting a lot of the best talent but a lot of the kids that didn't go to private schools stayed local. Dillard was consistently one of the top teams in the county along with Ely in Pompano Beach. Most of the schools out west were mediocre at best. Miramar was terrible (surprisingly!) we only won 2 games my senior year at Cooper City and one was against Miramar. Now, everything is different. There's a more private/charter schools and rules regarding transfers were significantly lessened. STA still gets to pick and choose their players but Heritage and Chaminade have made serious inroads. The public schools all poach kids just like they do in Dade. Pretty much every good team is bringing in at least a handful of out of area kids. It's just the way it is now. The teams and players are significantly better now. The old days of there only being a couple of D1 prospects from 1 or 2 schools are long gone.

Don't kid yourselves if you think Broward kids are mercenaries and Dade kids are playing for their home schools. There's a reason a small handful of Dade schools are stacked with D1 players and the rest of them don't compete. If your school is competing for state and regional titles, you're relying on out of area kids.

Yeah my dad's side of the family is from South Georgia. a couple months ago on here, I was sayin how I'm some kin to the Brownlee kid who committed to FSU. Same with Shon Brownlee (who I'm sure @gogeta4 remembers from playing football at Hallandale in the early 2000s) and Ricky Brownlee, who EVERYBODY in Opa Locka knows for "reasons" lol. Any Brownlee, Dixon, or some Williams that are in Carol City, Opa Locka, Hallandale, Hollywood/Dania or Pompano, prolly originate from that same town in South Georgia. They moved down here following work and now spread out all over south florida.

On my mom's side, my grandmother was the first co-valedictorian at Dillard in '39 if I'm not mistaken.
Granddad was val at Booker T in Miami in '37 cuz there were no black High Schools in Broward before Dillard (then came Ely and Attucks). So had to catch the train from Dania to Miami every day for school. Wild thing was, South Broward was right up the street and he had to get on a train for Miami, all because, black.

A lot of black folk in Dade and Broward from South Carolina too. From Lake City, Kingstree, Florence and other lil towns. Came following a company that did cement mixing and other work that moved from South Carolina to Broward in the mid-1900s. If you see black folk with the last name Graham, Anderson, Blackmon, etc. down here and they say they're from South Carolina, there's a good chance that's part of their story.

Our history here is fascinating.

Yea i played against Shon at hallandale.

The bolded is where my former teammate Bryant Mcfadden is/was from. You hitting it right on the money. My fam in dade are/were from COLORED TOWN (OVERTOWN) went to Booker T.

**** near everyone in Carver Ranches related as well as Liberia. (Hollywood/Dania)

Funny you say that, Shon is a good friend of mine. He was roommates at Stony Brook with my best friend (who's Malcolm Lewis 1st cousin) and naturally we got cool. And yeah, all y'all Brownlees related. That brings me something I forgot to say last post. I don't know who buddy know from Hallandale, Carver Ranches, etc. that don't claim Broward but it sounds like they just some pussies no matter where they from. Everybody I know from that zone rep they ****. Go ask my homie Shon and his peoples if they rep Dade, and he's related to Dade county hood royalty. Also, if your African American and a South Florida native, it's likely your family's from North Florida (Ocala area and up) GA, SC, or Bama originally...

Hollywood people HATE dade...Believe me i went to the Mac in Hollywood. lol. Thats why we always had beef...because Miramar is the other side and we were more connected to Dade always. A miramar/pembroke pines kid would tell you they from Miami all **** day...Got**** Allen Hurns still rep for Carver Ranches and he went to Carol City, Pleasure P (Pretty Ricky) reps Carver Ranches..i went to school with him to.

Yupp. I knew of Bryant from people from Carver Ranches who knew him. Same way I knew who Philip Dorsett was. Played with his kinfolk Willie Floyd at Chaminade and either his pops or uncle had a barber shop right there by Washington park.

I was just in Kingstree visiting a family friend (who grew up in Liberia, but was from Kingstree) in January. If I told them McFadden's name, I'm sure they'd know his people in a hot second.

Kingstree ain't nuthin but cotton fields anyway. Man I was driving to their house ridin by miles and miles of cotton fields and I started searching for my freedom papers. smh lol

im from miami. dont need to rep the inferior county to the north

Sigh, Fam you not going to get me to down talk my city/county. You can talk a sore in your Mouth. Broward is relevant, so again Broward "B**ch. God Bless You.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, Miramar and Pembroke Pines were small suburbs of Hollywood and on the outer southwestern fringes of Broward. I went to McArthur in the early 70's and we had kids from what was considered West Hollywood at the time. I lived on Taft and 71st Ave and had a pretty good ride to get to school. Kids east of 441 and north of Sheridan went to Hollywood Hills - considered "high rent" at the time. University Drive was considered the sticks. Hollywood Sportatorium was considered in the middle of nowhere. McArthur football sucked in those days for 2 reasons - we had a state championship level wrestling program that got all the attention (10 or 12 straight) and the HC refused to play underclassmen. So we said f**k him and we stayed with our optimist teams until we were juniors.

Alumni....THE MAC. Yea we apparently had a big time Wrestling history. If MCA keeps most of their kids they would be a main stay in the playoffs. Their ids typically get raided by Chaminade, Miramar,Hallandale, and any other privates. They have a coach now that brings kids in...and now they are back on the track. Hollywood Hills has been sorry as f*ck since the early 2000s since i was in high school and nothing has changed lol
