The Battle for Broward

Names of these great OL please? You surely can't be talking about Ereck Flowers! When I think of great UM OL, I think of Winston, and Harrah (70s). Neither were from Fla. Nor was Bryant McKinnie.
I think they’re referring to OL from Miami not UM

Yeah cause y'all the only people in Broward who are from Broward, but will pretend they're from Miami. I have Family in Hallandale, and my Ol Girl grew up in the Ranches. They claim Broward all day. Just a few P**** N***** who don't.

It is what it is. Miramar/Pembroke Pines is a suburb of miami. Its where folks from Liberty City/Carol City migrated to like my family did.

And Hallandale...Carver Ranches definately claim it like that as Broward. Because they are a bit different as Miramar and Pembroke are newer cities. Folks grand and great grandparents grew up in Carver Ranches or on Foster road...majority of people...Moved to Miramar/Pembroke from dade. I personally rep BROWARD n Dade.

Are you claiming ereck flowers wasnt one of our best linemen over the past ten or so years?

Not my fault you conveniently forgot about the highest paid center in NFL history.

It’s 2019. Not 1970.

I'm sure Ereck Flowers was one of our best OL of the last 10 years. Maybe THE best. And, he's a flat out NFL bust! You made my point. But ... still waiting to hear who all these other So Fla OL you think were so great were?

Most of the Carver Ranches, Hallandale, Liberia/Hollywood, Dania folks rep Broward because they're moving around from one to the other often. Those neighborhoods have a lot of connections. Those are very old communities. Like the black ones in Fort Lauderdale and Pompano.

They are all black communities started when people were working on the old Flagler railroad or farming near it. That's why so many of those communities are between 95 and the railroad. Flagler, Model Land Company and other employers wanted black workers living as near to work as possible. My family has been in Dania/Liberia for over 100 years.

Before integration, the black folk from all those neighborhoods (and even black neighborhoods as far south as Ojus, which is near present-day Aventura) I just mentioned went to Attucks High in Liberia. So they have ties to each other as Broward residents and as older neighborhoods.

The Miramars and Pembroke Pines, and others of Southwest Broward, as Gogeta4 stated, are younger communities, often comprised, as Carol City was, of people who moved from Overtown and Liberty City areas of Miami usually from projects or apartments to single-family homes. So they have more of a tie to Dade.

I grew up in Dania. Played football for Northeast in Liberia. Played basketball for Washington Park in Carver Ranches. And hung out with family in the black part of Hallandale. I also went to school in Miami for a time at Bunche Park in Opa Locka. Never considered myself from Dade even though it was that close. Broward all the way.

I think of black Broward as 4 distinct groups.
- Southwest Broward (Miramar, Pines, etc)
- South Broward (Carver Ranches, Hallandale, Liberia, Dania)
- Fort Lauderdale (Sistrunk area, Lauderhill, over by Fort Lauderdale HS, all the stuff near the Swap Shop, by Piper and Boyd Anderson, etc.)
- North Broward (Deerfield and Pompano).

Of the 4, the only one that would make sense to rep Dade county is Southwest Broward. The other three really have few ties to Dade county. They're their own separate things. Even from each other to a certain extent. Somebody in Miramar prolly has no lived experience in Pompano.

Gotta remember, Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, even before the population surge of the last few decades, are three BIG *** COUNTIES. lol

No, that he's the only name you can come up with as a Miami-bred, NFL-worthy UM OL had had in the past 10 years. I don't know about you but, having seem him play at UM, I was shocked the NYG wasted a #1 on him. And ... even if I'm underrating Flowers, he's one guy. In ten years? That ain't gonna cut it.

Good History Lesson. Broward definitely have a lot of Black History. I'm still learning myself.

South Florida is a very very very interesting place when you deep dive into the history of the place. A lot shorter history than many other places in the country because its a relatively young place, but SO MUCH has happened here in such a short period of time.

There's material for a slew of books and movies and tv shows if somebody cares to do so.

Exactly .

For example...my great grandfather and his brothers came from the Bahamas to work on the Flagler railroad thing. This is why there are high percentages of bahamian descendants in Carver Ranches, Delray Beach, Pompano, Dania, Coconut Grove. My great grandfather didnt stay just did the contract and went back..but my family is flooded through those citiies named just because of Flagler and those guys coming over and having kids, etc

Yup. My great great grandfather escaped slavery in the Carolinas. Made it to Gainesville, hid in with some Seminole natives there, married one (my great great grandmother), moved to Miami to work as a cook at a hotel near the railroad (actually near where the Freedom Tower and Heat's arena are now) in downtown Miami area.

Later moved to Hollywood near where the Seminole casino is now so my great great grandmother could be near more of her people (around the turn of the century) and we've been in South Broward area ever since. My great grandfather used to farm tomatoes where South Broward High School is now and trap rabbits to sell in the Hollywood area.

African Americans and Bahamian Americans have been living together in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach since this thing became a thing. I always know Bahamians by the last names: Rolle, Knowles, Pinder, Beneby, Munroe, Roker, etc. But yeah, we've been intermingled for over 100 years now.
One thing people don't know is, Miami needed African American and Bahamian votes just to incorporate the city:
miami.webp

You hit the nail on the head bruh. I'm born and raised in Brown Sub, but I have a good amount of family in Broward and I definitely put them in two categories. The first being the Lifers. My grandmothers both have multiple siblings that settled in Broward when those parts of my family came down from North Florida and South Georgia. Their kids, grands, and great-grands make up that group. They're definitely groups 3 and 4. All of their diplomas are from Dillard or Stranahan or Deerfield Beach. I'm talking Sunland Park, Deepside, Parkway, The Manor, **** like that. That's my family that I used to fall asleep in the car as a jit when we'd go visit them. Then there's the "New Broward" category. ALL of them are from Dade originally and they pulled a George & Weezy. Guess where they live. The younger ones claim Broward as that's what they know mainly, but they're always tied to Dade and they know it. That's how a certain former blue chip prospect relative of mine ended up at AH and not Norland.

Yeah my dad's side of the family is from South Georgia. a couple months ago on here, I was sayin how I'm some kin to the Brownlee kid who committed to FSU. Same with Shon Brownlee (who I'm sure @gogeta4 remembers from playing football at Hallandale in the early 2000s) and Ricky Brownlee, who EVERYBODY in Opa Locka knows for "reasons" lol. Any Brownlee, Dixon, or some Williams that are in Carol City, Opa Locka, Hallandale, Hollywood/Dania or Pompano, prolly originate from that same town in South Georgia. They moved down here following work and now spread out all over south florida.

On my mom's side, my grandmother was the first co-valedictorian at Dillard in '39 if I'm not mistaken.
Granddad was val at Booker T in Miami in '37 cuz there were no black High Schools in Broward before Dillard (then came Ely and Attucks). So had to catch the train from Dania to Miami every day for school. Wild thing was, South Broward was right up the street and he had to get on a train for Miami, all because, black.

A lot of black folk in Dade and Broward from South Carolina too. From Lake City, Kingstree, Florence and other lil towns. Came following a company that did cement mixing and other work that moved from South Carolina to Broward in the mid-1900s. If you see black folk with the last name Graham, Anderson, Blackmon, etc. down here and they say they're from South Carolina, there's a good chance that's part of their story.

Our history here is fascinating.

Funny you say that, Shon is a good friend of mine. He was roommates at Stony Brook with my best friend (who's Malcolm Lewis 1st cousin) and naturally we got cool. And yeah, all y'all Brownlees related. That brings me something I forgot to say last post. I don't know who buddy know from Hallandale, Carver Ranches, etc. that don't claim Broward but it sounds like they just some pussies no matter where they from. Everybody I know from that zone rep they ****. Go ask my homie Shon and his peoples if they rep Dade, and he's related to Dade county hood royalty. Also, if your African American and a South Florida native, it's likely your family's from North Florida (Ocala area and up) GA, SC, or Bama originally...

Small small world man. And funny thing is, I've got family ties to each of those 4 places you mentioned. Maternal grandmother, North Florida. Maternal grandfather, SC. Paternal grandfather, GA. Paternal grandmother Bama.

But THANKFULLY, they all ended up here in South Florida. Thank GOD. Cuz that deep south SEC country **** looks AWFUL. I can't imagine being from ANY of them lil towns man. lol

**** yeah bruh, me and my cousins say that all the time. I don't what I'm more thankful for, them leaving the woods or making the decision to come here. My family's make-up is **** near the same. My Ol' Girl's parents were from across the FL-GA line from each other. My pops' pops was from Alabama and his mom is from Ocilla, GA. A couple of my homeboys from Carol City are Andersons, and yup their family's from SC...
