Some Spring thoughts

So lets get the thread back on track.

I wish Crow and Williams had some time with the 1st team ol to judge them better

Yeah, just based on what was displayed by the backup QBs yesterday. 2014 could be a year where we have everything we need except a competent QB

This.

I look forward to fall camp and practices to hear how the QBs are progressing. We have Olsen coming in. Most predict him to wear a shirt his first year.
Based on our backup situation, an injury to Morris and im not too comfortable with the QB situation on the roster. Watching all of the spring games on ESPN3 and reading reports of other spring games throughout the nation; most teams have 2-3 quarterbacks who can play. I didn't feel that way with us. I will say Williams has progressed a little.

Lmao this thread has got fun! **** Pecos you had me rollin. Some aspects I agree with you on wholeheartedly. As much as Morris ****es you off with what he did last season I think you can not argue he's taken a step or a few forward. He's def not AR but some of the windows he threw into were absolutely sickening. He was also throwing the receiver open with that big *** arm. He waited too long to get rid if the ball a lot last year & now he seems to be seeing the play & making it happen before it happens. That's the next step for him. Some of those deep outs yesterday were just beautiful.

I think you all are going to be surprised how high Morris ends up getting drafted. 6"2 QB's with above average speed and rocket launchers on their shoulders dont grow on trees.

At first glance, I actually thought Grimble and King flashed some as well early yesterday, going against the better o-line. In particular, King was pretty solid holding the point of attack when I was watching him, both got some penetration, but King needs to learn how to get low and tackle. He goes too high at ball carriers. I know it was Duke, but he had him in the backfield for a 2 yard loss, missed the tackle and Duke was off to the races. I think these two just need to be more consistent, because they showed yesterday that they have the ability to play in spurts. I'm gonna watch the game again and try to watch them and the rest of the D-line more closely to judge them a little better.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a rotation on the Oline. Give guys a drive off here and there to keep them fresh late, especially if they stick with the uptempo offense. Being able to rotate 7-8 guys on the Oline and not have a drop off is huge.

D$, I had the same observations of Sandland's behavior yesterday. On several plays he seemed slow-to-react because he was overthinking, especially that first underneath throw where he could have gained another 10 YACs if he had just been a little smoother. And I believe he needs a lot of work with S&C still. I think he meets the hype in 2014 or tail end of this season, but we'll need to count on Warlord against UF.

I was a little disappointed in the line matchups. Pierre, Porter and Robinson tore through the third-stringers they faced, especially Robinson who was against the right-side OG that I believe was a walk-on. So while our Orange-team run-defense looked stout, the competition was unbalanced, and I wonder how they would have dealt with McDermott, Bunche and Linder inside.

Regarding the starting OL, can you see a scenario where Bunche and Feliciano start on 1st downs, then Bunche rotates between OT and OG with Flowers and Feliciano on 2nd/3rd downs depending on pass or run situations? I remember when Wilfork was a sophomore, he was the third man in but best DT on the team. Maybe that's how they play Flowers this year? ... What a great problem to have!!

Regarding incoming class, it seems to me that even with 20 starters returning, we will have lots of guys fighting for playing time. Figueroa and Sandland are already in the rotation. Bond, Kamalu, AQM, Elder, Edwards, Burns, Carter, Grace all have legit shots, along with the walk-on punters/kickers. Outside of Figs, who do you see as the most likely to have impact? And do you think Coley redshirts with all the talent we have at WR?

I also think Dortch is gonna end up being a steal. I know he gave up a lot of completions, but he's severely underweight, only a redshirt freshman and was going up against a QB and WR who look like they're gonna be all ACC and future high round NFL picks. Despite all that, he was on the WR's hip on almost every play and it took **** near perfect passes to get completions. I was pleasantly surprised by how well he looked and his potential.

About Morris -- I was a major detractor of his two years ago. Morris always had an elite arm. But his S&C were weak, his mechanics were weak, he would stare down receivers and rarely even look at his second receiving option. For all his athleticism, he didn't know when to move outside of the pocket and/or run the ball. IMO, Jed Fisch has turned him into a legitimate Top 10 QB now. I was there yesterday, and the kid I saw on the field cannot be compared to the kid that was started too early when Jacory went down against Va Tech. Morris made great reads, placed the ball exceptionally well, and distributed the ball to multiple weapons to spread the field. I believe he's going to win games for us this year, starting with Florida.

Updated with a couple of points of agreement with Dread and Rings. Dortch looked much better than some posters are giving him credit. He was scored on twice, by Waters and Scott. But those throws by Morris were money. Same with Morris' throw to Scott vs. Tracy Howard. Howard was draped all over Scott; that throw was just perfect. Regarding Grimble and King, they're making more progress than I expected. I didn't expect Grimble at SDE to work out, but he did just fine yesterday collapsing the pocket, though he'll never be the pass rusher we need (more like Green, IMO). King played decent ball against a very strong Orange OL. We're no longer bottom of the ACC on DL, and can maybe get to respectable if any of Kamalu, Bond or AQM deliver on their pass-rush promise.

Grimble got at the QB a bunch of times but held up as to not make contact with the QBs.

King stopped all RBs not named Duke. I actually saw King in on every play.

REALLY....

kid has an ARM....just naturally....some nfl gm is going to want to develop that....right now imo if he has a solid to good season he is off the boards in the first 3 rounds...

Stephen Morris is head and shoulders better than EJ MANUEL.

Bunche and Feliciano on 1st down? Then where's Linder? (our best O-lineman)

Feliciano and Linder shouldn't be touched, regardless of situation. They've been our two best O-linemen for the past two seasons.

Wildcat, Sorry I was unclear. I'm talking about what the left side of the line will look like. Linder is RG. Bunche/Flowers are LT and Bunche/Feliciano are LG. Nothing to do with McDermott, Linder or Henderson, as I think those slots are set in stone.

Muhammad is the guy I expect to have the earliest impact.

He's the most talented signee, IMO, there is a need at DE and he has the work ethic/motor that will endear him to Coach D'Onofrio. It won't be long before he passes guys like Hoilett and Jelani.

I don't see Stacy Coley redshirting. Number 1, I don't know if he's mature enough to handle it. Number 2, I expect him to compete from the moment he arrives on campus. That's how he's wired.

I'm really excited to see how Coley meshes with Morris. With his skill set and SM's downfield arm, they can make magic the same way SM and Dorsett do now. A redshirt won't do us much good, anyway. Coley let everybody know at his press conference that he is on a three-year plan.

Most teams have 2-3 Qb's who can play at a high level? That is definitely not the case. Most teams seasons are done when the starting qb goes down
