Run Game

Again, this conversation started off as creativity within the running offense and and turned into yards per Carry debate

I’m happy you’re happy let’s move on

Look at the difference between how we ran against UFag and FAMU. No need to open the playbook against an FCS opponent. There were quite a few great runs, formations, and creativity against the Gaytors. You'll see that against the bigger boys.
I wouldn't expect to see too much against Ball State either. Playbook will get back to interesting starting with USF.
Good point and assume that will be the case. Just don’t want a bevy of dive plays.

Fair enough.

We can use this week over week to see how well the team is tracking in the run game.

@ UF - 33 rushes, 144yds (4.3ypc) - Fail
vs FAMU - 38 rushes, 225yds (5.9ypc) - Pass
To me, it’s not really a pass or fail thing. 4 YPC normally leads to third and seventh where 5 YPC normally leads to third and short

This debate came about due to running the same run plays from last year and posters like myself we’re talking about a little bit more creativity in the run selections and then the stats came out.

Yes, it’s been two games but even some of the best running offenses in country still use some creativity in the run play section not just running up the gut cause you think you have a good offensive lin.

Defense will catch on

Yes, we’ll face better opponents later in the season with very capable DCs. While the run game has been effective so far it’s also been fairly predictable. Got to add some diversity to prevent the better opponents on our schedule from severely limiting the effectiveness of the run game going forward. Dawson is starting to work CJ & Lyle into the mix for this reason and to generate some explosive plays (which don’t require a high level of execution play after play to sustain drives).

We averaged 5.1 ypc as a team last year. With Martinez & Ward we should sleepwalk to 5.0 ypc

I'd say 5.0 ypc as a team should be the minimum. 5.5 would be a high (but attainable) goal.

And it's a sliding scale, right? I'd say 4.3 vs Florida (I'll take that) was better than 5.9 vs FAMU (I was expecting more). But these are season long goals. Too early to tell after 2 games.

How many yards per carry do you think Mark Walton would average behind this O Line with Cam Ward as his QB?

I know you're joking - but.....

Miami's PFF Run Blocking Rank:

2016 - #33 - when Walton started
2023 - #35 - and our RB's were pretty mid, same as in 2016
2024 - #77 - it's just 2 games, we'll see where they end up

I'd guess about the same. What would you guess?

We haven't really seen much scheme wise just yet. A bunch of duo and inside zone. We ran counter 1st drive against Famu for a good gain and a nice counter trey against UF when Martinez baptized a safety. Those are just off the top of my head. The wrinkle we added inserting Sam Brown on Fletcher's TD was well executed.

I am interested to see if our tight splits are here to stay though. We've had a few runs so far where everyone is blocked but there is simply no gap to hit and the back has to bounce it. It's almost like our own version of Wake Forest's run game inside.

5.1 is where we were last year. 5.5 was the 6th best average in the country.

I don't believe Dawson is trying to show too much in a game with FAMU. Seems like they wanted to work on basic plays, which should still be executed at a high level but haven't really been blocked well.

I anticipate more of the same bread and butter plays against Ball State. I imagine they'll save the more creative alignments and personnel versatility with no-huddle for more challenging situations/opponents.

Yup - we were 5.1 ypc last year which was #16 the country. 5.5 ypc would place us #7 last year

Which is why I said 5.5 is a high (but attainable) goal.

In the end - Martinez is a career 6.1 ypc RB. IMO the success of our running game is mostly dependent on how good he can be, and what % of the carries he gets.

After rewatching the game , the running game wasn’t as bad as I thought Watching it live. Our rbs missed a few holes which could have went for bigger gains. Martinez who played great missed 2 that he would have housed for long yardage

The point of tight splits is to collapse the interior and allow the RB to bounce a run out wide in a 1v1 vs a CB (which is what you want).

Take a quick guess why Rhamondre Stevenson, who is a ******* tank, ran wild vs the Bengals... ran duo inside and he bounced it. More often than not, Martinez is still dancing behind a line instead of simply hitting the hole in front of him.

See hole, hit hole. We have too much dancing.
