Run Game

I don't know why most on here are saying Fletcher is a weak link. He has three tds and has looked good in limited action in my opinion.

We are averaging close to 350 yards passing per game so far. There hasn't been a need to really lean on the run game. It will be there when teams start to drop more in coverage.

We did a lot of this early last season too against weaker opponents. I’m okay with not getting creative in a 55-9 game but hopefully we’ll see a few wrinkles in conference play with a healthy line.
Yea im not complaining at all just keep winning lol

It'll probably take a little time for the RB and OL to get that chemistry. But they were still explosive.

It was just ok against UF, more of the same 1H against an FCS team. 2H was much better, because Martinez played more and we ran outside the tackles/bounced outside instead of the same interior stuff. Our interior push needs to get a bit better, but this is a pass first team now. Why wouldn’t it be? We have Cam mf Ward and 4 legit WRs.

Martinez is our best back and it’s not close imo. We’re saving him for later in the season.

Markel Bell isn’t ready.
Lyle looks like RB2.

Yeah these numbers definitely look like the run game struggled. OMG do people watch these games.

Damian had 11 touches for 91 yards at an 8.3 yard average. 33 long
Fletcher had 5 carries for 42 yards at an 8.4 yard average, 23 long
Lyle had 6 carries for 40 yards for a 6.7 yard average. 13 long

All 3 had TD's. Hardly a struggle.
I never said we struggled. But we played the sisters of the blind. We got push from our line on many of those plays for an extra 5-7 yards after contact. So the numbers are inflated by that. Pushing the pile and making a 1 yard gain 7 yards is cool, but it triples the chance of injury for everyone in the pile. Spread teams out, create 1 v 1 opportunities. Likely results in 1on 1 tackles instead of pile ups where body parts and limbs are flying around lol

Martinez is elite but the run blocking isn’t as good as I expected it to be. FAMU got gashed up the middle against Norfolk State and we weren’t really able to do that. Our OL has been elite in pass pro but the run blocking has taken a step back from last year IMO.

Also I love Fletcher but he is getting too many carries. Martinez is clearly the better back…better vision, better burst, better power…but they seem to split carries 50/50.

Lyle seems like a special one too….also better than Fletcher IMO
considering we may play four additional games (an increase of 25%), i believe that we are going to keep the wear and tear down on all running backs. i would be surprised if any one gets over 17 carries a game.

the extended post season is going to create many challenges which teams have never seen before

What is it exactly that you disagree with? For the record, I'm not impressed with our rushing attack to this point. It just doesn't seem to be clicking yet. I paired that with my personal opinion that we have 5 talented RBs and a very good offensive line. You may not like the use of the term room. Would you prefer the term "Corps" or "position group"?

So to sum up I'm saying that I don't think the running game is where we want it to be currently. I also think that Martinez needs a little more time to get accustomed to our inside zone scheme. I also believe that we have a very talented group of running backs to go with a very good offensive line and that the rushing attack will improve as the season progresses. Again, what exactly is it that you disagree with?

You may not love Martinez and/or Fletcher but they are what they are. Big power backs with good not great speed. Martinez has more lateral agility than Fletcher and better speed but Fletcher is a load when he gets going and the kid has intangibles that can't be taught. Plus, Fletcher is still developing. RB is a strong position for us. There is no Clinton Portis, Edgerrin James, Frank Gore or Willis McGahee on this squad but what we have is very good and more than good enough to compliment our passing attack. I think we will improve running the football as the year goes on.
Martinez needs to be paired with Lyle or CJ. Bringing Fletcher in (who I don't think is a good running back) doesn't make sense with the flow of the offense. There's a reason teams bring in the faster guy second.

A lot of people cite ypc, but I wish median was the standard instead of average.
As for what could improve, the blocking could be better, but mostly I'd like to see more creativity and spacing. The Fletcher vs Martinez vs Lyle thing isn't really the main factor in how much better we get.

There’s not some secret stash of plays but Dawson definitely calls games a lot different against overmatched opponents. Remember last year when they just kind of pounded Ohio Miami in the opener but then went crazy against A&M in week two? And they went right back to ground and pound the next two weeks against FAMU and Temple.

Yes.

I like the “end this ************ right now” Dawson vs the puckered **** trying not to lose option…

Y'all do realize we run up the gut so much because we're really good at it? ESPN showed stat that last year we were 1st in rush yards between the guards (130yards/g) and 4th in rushes (24). Nearly 5.5 ypc. That's really good. I imagine chances of getting holding called much smaller on inside runs than in outside runs. It does limit our explosives in the run game, and I hope we keep sprinkling in outside runs to get more explosives, but running up the gut is our bread and butter and for good reason.

It would be nice to not run into loaded boxes every game. For whatever reason though, we love runnnjg out of tight formations which in turn loads the box defensively

The run scheme looks identical to last year so this is what I would expect going foward.

It seems to work decently enough by the end of the game, but it's obvious that it could be better.

Why not more motion?

Why do we motion guys tighter to run up the middle? Does it create more traffic?

Why not some off-tackle stuff?

Fletchers TD against UF is what I want to see more of.

I think it also has a secondary effect of maybe exposing the coaches deficiencies in developing offensive linemen ready for P4 ball.

They recruited/developed Mauignoa and Cooper. NFL players.

Rivers was here.

They had to bring in Cohen and Lee last year.

They had to bring in Carpenter this year.

McCoy, and Rodriguez aren't good enough to be the starter. The co-start.

Okunlola seems to be 2nd team.

Bell isn't ready for P4 play.

Everyone else they recruited....

It's got me thinking. They'll 100% hit the portal for a new center in the off-season, and maybe other linemen.
