Run Game

Given that we were down 1-2 starters on the oline and we were playing FAMU, I am not concerned… for now.

Moving forward? I think Martinez has elite potential and Fletcher is very good too. I can’t help but think they would pop more explosive runs if we could get them to the outside a bit more. The play Fletcher scored on last week against Florida is what I’d like to see more of, especially Martinez, who has great patience if allowed to use it. Also some motion would open up running lanes even more too.

I know Cam said we really haven’t gotten in our bag yet, I am hoping the same is true for the running game.

not sure if this is serious or not ? It just cant be . I mean we are a passing attack with cam but our RB eat up yards both games when they get in. At one point tonight we had 12 rushes for 110 yards. Yep get your crap together RB and OL LOL
Bruh….CIS gon CIS. Leave em be.

Slow developing. Would love to see CJ get more touches with his outside running ability. Not to mention, would love to see some wheel-routes to him as well.
This. CJ has shown in limited snaps that he can create an explosive play about 1 out of every 3 times he touches the ball. He scored a TD against FAMU on one of his few touches & did the same thing last yr against Miami of OH on a spectacular run.

He can be devastating on toss sweeps, wheel routes, reverses etc. Get him the ball in space & let him tear it up. Would love Dawson & Mirabal to study the run blocking schemes of the Tennessee Titans when CJ’s namesake was tearing up NFL opponents for 2,000 yds per season. Implement that together with a nice complement of power runs (with Martinez & Fletcher) and this Offense would be lethal.

CJ offers the greatest upside of any of the RBs we currently have on the rooster. 🐔

Martinez needs to be paired with Lyle or CJ. Bringing Fletcher in (who I don't think is a good running back) doesn't make sense with the flow of the offense. There's a reason teams bring in the faster guy second.
I agree 100%. There's a reason for it and I understand what they are doing with Fletcher. However I see that the Martinez/Lyle or Martinez/Johnson pairing is much better for the flow of this offense like you stated. I can also see the above pairings happening by mid season. Chris Johnson needs to be integrated more into the offense as he has not played much to this point. Same with Lyle who is a true freshman. When either one earns that trust then we will begin to see those combinations at RB that we want to see.

We averaged 4.5 YPC against an SEC defense in a road opener without any large outliers to increase the average.

Not sure where some of you have been the last 20 years but we haven’t been close to that efficient against an SEC opponent, maybe USC would be the lone exception.

Not concerned. It will get better as the season moves along. There will inevitably be a game or some games when Miami will need to lean on the ground game and grind out a win. Miami has had zero issues driving down the field and scoring so just keep chopping wood.

As a spectator I'm not a big fan of watching inside zone running all game but there is value in it. Dawson has sprinkled in outside runs successfully thus far.

We are averaging 184.5 yards per game on the ground in an air raid scheme. Not sure what more you want from the run game lol

A lot of the same people complaining about the running game, which as you pointed out is averaging 184.5 per game (50th) are the same ones who are the "fisical bro, Mario ball, we run too much" crowd. Now we are 7th in the country in passing, and still averaging 5.7 ypc and people are still complaining. Our fans suck.

We’re averaging 48.5 points per game, are 2-0 and won both games handily and some are still nit pickin’ *******.

It seems to work decently enough by the end of the game, but it's obvious that it could be better.

Why not more motion?

Why do we motion guys tighter to run up the middle? Does it create more traffic?

Why not some off-tackle stuff?

Fletchers TD against UF is what I want to see more of.

I think it also has a secondary effect of maybe exposing the coaches deficiencies in developing offensive linemen ready for P4 ball.

They recruited/developed Mauignoa and Cooper. NFL players.

Rivers was here.

They had to bring in Cohen and Lee last year.

They had to bring in Carpenter this year.

McCoy, and Rodriguez aren't good enough to be the starter. The co-start.

Okunlola seems to be 2nd team.

Bell isn't ready for P4 play.

Everyone else they recruited....

It's got me thinking. They'll 100% hit the portal for a new center in the off-season, and maybe other linemen.

What?

Needs to stop dropping the ball. Could be disastrous.

Run game stats are fine off two games, but will need more creativity as the season goes on.

Look at the difference between how we ran against UFag and FAMU. No need to open the playbook against an FCS opponent. There were quite a few great runs, formations, and creativity against the Gaytors. You'll see that against the bigger boys.
I wouldn't expect to see too much against Ball State either. Playbook will get back to interesting starting with USF.

It’s only been two games.

But, ok.

What’s the mark at YPC that would indicate success to you?
This debate came about due to running the same run plays from last year and posters like myself we’re talking about a little bit more creativity in the run selections and then the stats came out.

Yes, it’s been two games but even some of the best running offenses in country still use some creativity in the run play section not just running up the gut cause you think you have a good offensive lin.

Defense will catch on

In your opinion, what is the goal for the yards per carry metric?

It’s obviously more than 4.3ypc.
