Run Game

Needs work.

Not sure if it's the Backs or the OL or a combination of both.

But we have some work to do here.
I feel like the formations are too tight and our splits with the line are much too tight. Need to spread teams out to have running room. Guys are not getting room to run because there’s nap space. Create space by spreading the d ⏸️

Here we got again with the RB room lol
What is it exactly that you disagree with? For the record, I'm not impressed with our rushing attack to this point. It just doesn't seem to be clicking yet. I paired that with my personal opinion that we have 5 talented RBs and a very good offensive line. You may not like the use of the term room. Would you prefer the term "Corps" or "position group"?

So to sum up I'm saying that I don't think the running game is where we want it to be currently. I also think that Martinez needs a little more time to get accustomed to our inside zone scheme. I also believe that we have a very talented group of running backs to go with a very good offensive line and that the rushing attack will improve as the season progresses. Again, what exactly is it that you disagree with?

You may not love Martinez and/or Fletcher but they are what they are. Big power backs with good not great speed. Martinez has more lateral agility than Fletcher and better speed but Fletcher is a load when he gets going and the kid has intangibles that can't be taught. Plus, Fletcher is still developing. RB is a strong position for us. There is no Clinton Portis, Edgerrin James, Frank Gore or Willis McGahee on this squad but what we have is very good and more than good enough to compliment our passing attack. I think we will improve running the football as the year goes on.

Martinez is elite but the run blocking isn’t as good as I expected it to be. FAMU got gashed up the middle against Norfolk State and we weren’t really able to do that. Our OL has been elite in pass pro but the run blocking has taken a step back from last year IMO.

Also I love Fletcher but he is getting too many carries. Martinez is clearly the better back…better vision, better burst, better power…but they seem to split carries 50/50.

Lyle seems like a special one too….also better than Fletcher IMO

I don’t understand how Martinez is getting questioned here lol…He was 11 for 91 8.3 ypc. This is his 2nd game in a entirely different run scheme that he was elite in and he is still producing.

Apart of the problem is the run blocking and how we run, he is making the best of it because we saw what it was with a better line last year vs acc play with our rb group.

I think if they spread things out a lil more and leverage the threat of our pass game, add more motions and shifts it would lead to bigger runs.

Right now we’re really just lining up saying you cant stop it no matter what and it probably will work majority of the time vs our schedule so im fine with it but there are ways we can get more

We ran one blocking scheme for about 95 % of the entire game lmao

Backs hit the hole much more quicker in the 3rd quarter, that's why it worked better. See hole, get hole. Fletcher stumbles hole at times and Martinez waits too much.

The blocking is alright. But we need more straightline.

I think larger splits could create larger running lanes, but i'm no offensive guru, just my opinion. Players are playing fine imo just a scheme thing that could open up the running game a little more.

We only ran the ball like 6 times in the first half. I looked at the scoreboard in the second quarter and we had 9 yards rushing because Cam got sacked on one of our six rushing plays. They could have very easily just ran the ball right at FAMU the entire game, which we pretty much did in the second half. We probably got a little too cute with some of the offense yesterday and you know it’s bad when I’m in the stands yelling “run the ball!”

We did a lot of this early last season too against weaker opponents. I’m okay with not getting creative in a 55-9 game but hopefully we’ll see a few wrinkles in conference play with a healthy line.

Naw OP is right. I left thinking the same thing. Running game isnt on same level as passing game. Needs some work.

Also, can we at least disguise better when the ball is gonna go to CJJ?? Leave him in a couple plays before you give it to him.

Running game ( plays ) look the same as last year, everything up the middle and let the back find a hole. No issue with the backs.
Would be nice to see an OL actually pull and have the back follow him through the line. No creativity in our run game.

You mean like we did multiple times against Florida?

Idk this was pretty creative to me.

Yeah these numbers definitely look like the run game struggled. OMG do people watch these games.

Damian had 11 touches for 91 yards at an 8.3 yard average. 33 long
Fletcher had 5 carries for 42 yards at an 8.4 yard average, 23 long
Lyle had 6 carries for 40 yards for a 6.7 yard average. 13 long

All 3 had TD's. Hardly a struggle.

Let’s see, hmm. Best passing game in the country per most of the CFB pundants. And you’re worried Run game isn’t up to par. 👍

Well there you go. You had to bring in the facts. You know this isn't the place for that stuff.
