4-2-5 NEXT YEAR...
We'd have more speed on the field if we switched to the 4-3 IMO.
And Porter is one of our strongest players and still couldn't be a standout in this system. Can't wait to see who we put at that spot next year.
Can't wait to see us sign all these stud D-linemen but not have them contribute until they're Juniors. *sigh*
Yep Chick should be playing at 255/260.So assuming we switch to a 4-3, who are the starters?
DE-Muhammad
DT-Chickillo
DT-Pierre
DE-McCord
WLB-Grace
MLB-Kirby
SLB-Figueroa
CB-Howard
CB-Burns
FS-Bush
SS-Carter
Chick needs to drop 15lbs and get some explosion...he doesn't carry 277 well, much less bulking up to DT size.
I laugh when people want to point to our incoming class, as if they are going to help us win games next year. We'd have more speed on the field if we switched to the 4-3 IMO.

Even if we switch to a 4-3 it's gonna be the same bend-but-don't-break bull****.
People who point to our incoming class are basically implying that we need to wait another 3 years to see real progress (at least under the current system). Lol, please.I laugh when people want to point to our incoming class, as if they are going to help us win games next year. We'd have more speed on the field if we switched to the 4-3 IMO.

You might be lucky enough to find a Duke or Stacy Coley, that can change games immediately but that's tough, especially on the defensive side of the ball. You might see some flashes like Quan and Figs have shown, but then you see them disappear for long stretches.

Because the kid is slow off the ball. 1-gap, 2-gap, the kid isn't explosive enough to do much. Let's be honest. Porter was unimpressive his true freshman season. At least he never demonstrated the explosion needed to be a difference maker. Played 7 games over the next 3 seasons. He was unproductive this season. As strong as the kid is he got move a lot because he was beaten to the second step.

You can question the validity of these statements, but here are some views on Porter:
“To me he’s the man in the middle,” outside linebacker Denzel Perryman said. “Nobody can block him.”
Backup tackle Luther Robinson described Porter as “tough and explosive off the ball. He’s been through a lot but he never quit.”
Defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio and coach Al Golden have repeatedly said that Porter could be a significant talent if he could stay healthy, conditioned and maintain consistency.
“The guys have a lot of respect for him,” D’Onofrio said. “He’s flashed and shown ability and that he can have an impact on plays. What we’ve got to get him to do is have an impact on games.”

Porter has flashed a good first step in the past. Certainly, better than whatever he's shown this year at *any* point (even early in the season when he was fresh). He hasn't flashed any consistency over his career, obviously. He's not built to be very effective at playing Nose. He had to gain 20 pounds just to get up to his current weight. He's also not a long-armed guy.

We'll see how the kid combines out. I'd suspect he'll do great at lifting and he won't do well with agility (cone work), assuming he even tests. Supposedly, the kid maintained the same weight but increased his muscle mass. He's never been explosive to the second step.
The DT recruiting fails of the prior 3 years are just insanely crippling regardless of what we do schematically, but extremely highlighted in a 3-4. I don't think it has anything to do with coaches having an identity crisis, they just haven't been able to land what's needed up front, and unfortunately either way we're probably hosed up front next year, especially when combined with the disappearing LB act (EJ, GP, GT).

We don't have the ideal DL to run their scheme and carry out their defensive philosophy, but we surely have good enough DL to be doing way better than we're doing.
Okay Drew, I surrender. Your boy is going day 2.
Seriously, Second Step always wins and he was getting his *** beat to the second step this year. Quite honestly, I didn't see that much that got me excited about last year getting to the second step in his limited play. The kid was outplayed by a kid who couldn't play for the Hoos this year.
Look, I'm happy the kid stayed healthy and he finished the year. That being said I was never impressed with the kid.

Hey, man, you kept saying things that contradicted what I had read, so I simply showed the links. I'm not saying he's going day 2. I'm saying he's looked worse than most, including players and coaches on his own team, expected him to look. He's looked worse this year, at all points, than he looked even in those random spurts earlier in his career. It's odd.

Definitely agree for this year. Next year's DT situation is Bluto Blutarsky "HOLY SHA--HITTT!" worthy.

Yes, I'm very familiar with the preseason quotes and the hype. Miami was banking on this kid being a difference maker this year. Never saw the quickness in the kid's second step. Miami has had two kids in the last 10 years with that type of prerequisite quickness to play defensive tackle at Miami and that is Kareem Brown and Marcus Forston.
We'll agree to disagree.
