New 2014 DT Signee; Joe Brown

Please. That's an awful comparison. Those JUCO kids have a two year body of work where they produced and dominated. There's some tangible evidence of a potential return on the investment of our scholarship. They've got a little bit of the flower coming out of the soil.

This kid is a bag of magic beans we bought from a hobo under a bridge. He's a fat, talentless hack. Golden must've seen a lot of himself in him.

This is a really good post. Until the last two sentences. The kid is a 'Cane now. I don't see the point in insulting him (or our coach, frankly).

I watched the Hudl highlights and the ESPN ones both...the ESPN highlights might be the best 5-6 plays the kid made all year long as a HS Junior in a video that lasted a little over a minute. The Hudl highlights show more warts that have been pointed out (lacks strength, doesn't fire off the ball well, plays too high, doesn't get push into the backfield, etc).

I understand wanting to hold this scholly back and put it against sanctions to help the '15/'16 recruiting classes, that's probably what I would have rather they done than take Brown. But...if the staff thinks he can be developed, and can contribute on down the road--it's on them to do make it happen. As long as the kid's work ethic is in the right place, they've got a shot at making him into a player.

This kid's frame screams DT, and you can't teach size...and a lot of the shortcomings that were pointed out can be fixed either via the weight room or coaching up proper technique. On a positive note--in the ESPN clip, you can see a couple of times where he gets leverage, gets his hands inside, and extends his arms to get push into the backfield...so he is capable of doing the things that a good DT tends to do. He just needs to get better, stronger, and more consistent. He'll get at least 2 years to develop before he's pressed into service (if he ever sees the field, that is).

On the negative side, this isn't quite Delmar Taylor, but it's close. He's raw, and who knows if the staff can develop him. He'll need the 2 years of development I mentioned to make him at least serviceable.

Apparently he is of Samoan decent..... good news

Then I am all in on him. Samoans be some bad boys. Plus, if he is a olinemen, Chad can use him in practice to show everyone what he did to that 5* Samoan out at the Opening! Hey, all kidding aside, welcome to THE U young man. Come in here and kick some rear from the get go and everyone will be right there for you. Bring a chip for both shoulders plus a couple spares.

He has no explosion off the ball at all. He is consistently getting blown off the ball and making plays due to lack of pass rush. He has great lateral quickness though which he looks like a linebacker at times. Overall this a reach and fail by the staff.

Wait, if you are correct, he fits the scheme perfect. 1) get blown off ball. 2) Make plays after 8 yard gain because of no pass rush 3) DL chases rb or WR on sideline pass routes. Amazed he is still available. Wait, the rest of college football is trying to STOP the other team before they gain 8 yards. We ahead of the curve, on the cutting edge of the new age defense which focuses on exhausting the other team by letting it gain more yardage than they are conditioned to handle. See NCAA is adding a 5th quarter and only Al know it. We will be the only team ready for the 5 quarter game.

Yes, it's a double-secret new rule.

So you're in on it too? Help us ncaa, you are our only hope!

JAG special, the more I look at his highlights, I'm not sure if he's worthy of a preferred walk-on spot here, WTF is the staff doing?

I'm sure the professional staff knows a **** of a lot more than some nobody sitting on his couch and surfing the web. Brown may not be a star, but he has the potential to add quality depth at a position of need. Someone to plug into the rotation who will likely be better than King or Moore.

[/I]

Well given your own premise, how do you explain the utter lack of production from the staff's previous under the radar DT selections: Darius Smith, Renfrow, King, and Briscoe?

dk72,

My issue with this is that we are "adding depth" while other teams are getting guys to compete for starting spots. I understand the problem, and realize that this is not fantasy football, but it is a concern nonetheless.

.

No one wanted Tez or Russell Maryland, either. Not saying this guy will hit. Just saying that stranger things have happened. Who knows. If he's really coming here, I hope he works hard and becomes productive.

back in the Tez and Maryland days their wasn't any internet ...times have changed

This isn't smart. Kids still go unnoticed even with all of the technology we have

You're right sometimes that does happen but I disagree with the point of Tez and Maryland. back then there was no internet or camps

It would be nice to find another Maryland. Kid was actually flipping burgers when we offered. What a story. Burger boy with only one offer to Outland Award and first pick in the NFL draft. And didn't even rape anybody. Lord, please give us another Maryland.

I don't get all the angst in this thread, its not like the staff was making a choice between Valentine and this kid and decided to go with Brown. We obviously had room for an addition to this class and they decided to offer a big kid with good stats and also a 2 time defensive player in his league. Maybe he pans out maybe he doesn't, but **** if we have the space why not give it a shot.

I know, I know we should have landed 4 - 5 star DTs in this class, but we didn't get over it. Don't some of you get sick of your own constant whining and negativity.

I don't see the problem with this offer.. we're not expecting this kid to come in and dominate right away.. maybe with some Utough and some coaching he becomes serviceable, or maybe he doesn't and just adds depth for 4 years.. don't see why it really matters.

And the great Jimmy Johnson probably had as many non-productive recruits but don't let that fact detract you from your ignorance.

This coaching staff is a complete and utter joke. Shame on anyone who defends picking up a complete scrub like this kid.

We are always going to be "adding depth" under this staff. Year 4 and we are still adding depth at DT. What a joke.

Just curious--what are your credentials/qualifications to critique his technique? Former player? Coach? Do all defensive systems require "push" into the backfield?

Unless you have credentials you cannot possibly have a credible opinion on a matter? Can I critique my doctor without having an MD? Just curious.

this thread is all that is wrong with message boards in a nutshell. a bunch of lawyers, accountants, salesman, construction workers and students acting like football coaches.

i have no idea what most of you do for a living but it seems like most of you must be football coaches or former players with the way you all evaluate film. i know there are a few guys that play football coach in real life on the board but come on.

Sooooo, let me get this straight, we aren't allowed to evaluate/critique players based on their highlight film? Or only if it's positive? Man please, that's why the board is here so we can have this discussion. Yes he has great size but with that size he isn't dominating kids half his size, some of which he's actually getting drove off the ball but I guess we have to be in a coaching position or be a former collegiate player/professional player to be able to see this.

it is ok to have an opinion but guys are just flat out positive they see a guy that can't play from these tapes. i just find it hard to believe guys are that good at evaluating tape to make some of the statements i am reading.
