New 2014 DT Signee; Joe Brown

Ha at the whiners who thought this kid was being brought in as a DT.

He is the other OL Golden said we were wanting at NSD, after Gibbons stuck it to us late in the game.

you can't teach size...

Bingo... As for this thread, stay classy people.

Welcome to the U kid.

Briscoe had size. Ivery was 3+. How'd that size work out?

He's still an extreme reach regardless of what position it's at.

I knew we were gonna pickup some bum at DT nobody wanted post NSD. This is an annual Golden tradition....when will he ever learn?

Agree 100%. Wish we had never wasted a ship on Ray Lewis too.

16 Pages on nothing but bullchit. Who cares? The staff wants this kid, great.

Separate your issues. You got issues with the coaching staff, then put it in a separate thread.

You got issues or you want to talk about the quality of this recruit, talk about it this thread.

16 pages on one recruit as if this kid is going to have some effect on this season.

Let me get this straight - we should feel better about this now that he's being brought in on the OL rather than the DL? So we're bringing in a guy that played DL, and not OL, in high school, was a guy that didn't have any stars under any of the recruiting services, and he's being brought in to "fill" the spot left by Gibbons, a highly rated OL who was likely to become part of our OL rotation in the next couple years, and that's better than him being brought in as a DL?

He may have been a JAG at DL, but he at least played the position. This guy isn't getting on the field as an OL for at least a couple years. Are we now going to say that he's the next "fill in an under the radar OL that Kehoe brought in at some point in his time at Miami"?

Brown's highlights get much better after the minute or so, an considering the scheme we run he has the natural tendency to read first than make the play rather than charge into a gap. With the proper coaching and commitment to Utough; Brown will develop into a very solid NT, but the key is for him to buy in 100%

For those questioning Brown's strength and explosiveness, I bring to your attention his 44ft Power ball toss at Sparq Combine. Just as a point of reference that toss would have tied for 3rd best at the Nike Open this summer behind Damien Mama (48ft) and Danter booker Jr who tossed a 45.5 ft.

An to close out the dline comparisons the best power ball toss for the 2014 class was Ja Quez Bullock from Henderson, NC who throw 44ft. Oh wait so that would mean Joe Brown tied for the best Power Ball throw in the nation among Dlinemen since he also throw 44ft.

Joe Brown's Sparq Results (82 Sparq rating puts him in the top 3/4th of the nation for dlinemen as a NT that's impressive)
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/combine/_/id/170442/joe-brown

An far more important than the bench press is the power ball toss for gauging upper body strength utility and overall explosiveness in a football player. Khairi Clark and Anthony Moten tied for 3rd best throws at 41ft of any dlinemen at the event an they were both 4* stars. So Brown has elite explosiveness and considering he probably doesn't work out much, he will have huge potential. Consider Sentreal Henderson is not a workout warrior yet he man handles dlinemen with his natural strength.

can we delete this thread and act like this never happened? ignorance is bliss kinda thing...

1 year of RS and he'll be good..like the pick up shows some quickness off the line and navigates through the trash well (good use of hands)

Why is 1 year going to do anything?

So he wasnt that great in HS but in 1 year he'll be fine in big time CFB

looks the same in all his profile pics in the recruiting sites.... Doest look that big and very ashy.

I guess every school except UTEP (and us) is gonna be wrong on evaluating this guy.

Kalvin Cline is from Ft. Lauderdale, had no stars/offers & didn't sign until first part of June.. Starting TE for VT

Not saying this kid will be great but him not being recruited due to academics isn't that concerning to me.

http://247sports.com/Player/Kalvin-Cline-13516

Horrible example. Cline wasnt even interested jn playing college football at first. He started playing his junior year to help the team and he thought it would be fun. He wanted to go to college for basketball his whole life. But once he realized big time d1 football > low level d1 or d2 college ball, he chose football. He didn't have academic problems either. Theres a reason he didnt sign till june. He was trying to play basketball but schools didnt want him. His football tape surfaced and VT made a good eval.

JAG special, the more I look at his highlights, I'm not sure if he's worthy of a preferred walk-on spot here, WTF is the staff doing?

I'm sure the professional staff knows a **** of a lot more than some nobody sitting on his couch and surfing the web. Brown may not be a star, but he has the potential to add quality depth at a position of need. Someone to plug into the rotation who will likely be better than King or Moore.

[/I]

Well given your own premise, how do you explain the utter lack of production from the staff's previous under the radar DT selections: Darius Smith, Renfrow, King, and Briscoe?

And the great Jimmy Johnson probably had as many non-productive recruits but don't let that fact detract you from your ignorance.

Did anyone say that projecting DTs is a certainty? Of course not. But, Golden has been here four years; and his record for under the radar DTs has been disastrous. We got next to nothing from the four guys I mentioned above. The only under the radar DT we've seen anything from is Olsen Pierre, but he's no superstar. He's a complement player; not somebody you build a defensive line around.

Not sure why you brought up Jimmy Johnson, as there was no one better than Jimmy at talent evaluation and player development, particularly at DT: Russell Maryland, Tez, Jimmie Jones, etc...

We've seen virtually nothing from Golden concerning DTs. He's missed out every year on the stud DT recruits; and the back-up plans have not panned out.

If you're enlightened, then I'm happy to remain ignorant.

say it ain't so...

Theres a reason he didnt sign till june. He was trying to play basketball but schools didnt want him.

There's a reason this kid didn't sign until March.. Didn't have the grades. I was simply pointing out a recent kid from Miami who should end up being a stud that didn't get recruited. Grades, different sport preference. It's all the same.

Why did Gray get a Miami offer in June? When it looks like he still doesn't have the grades? Why do other kids with grade issues still get offers but not Brown?

Briscoe had size. Ivery was 3+. How'd that size work out?

Both had bigtime offers from other programs & signed on signing day.. Not seeing the connection here.

So you think he should just stop trying to make the team better bc of past failures?

Bc he is one of the most talented kids in SoFla? Maybe some kids are worth putting through prep while others aren't... especially when it seems the kid doesn't have much film at the position he is being recruited for.

There have been lots of kids over the years who received no offers due to grades.
