New 2014 DT Signee; Joe Brown

I agree his highlights get much better as they go on, especially for th scheme we run. There were several games in which brown had more than 9 solo tackles from NT spot while being doubled teamed. In one game he had 9 tackles, caused a fumble which another player scooped and scored, and he also had a sack in that game.

Those stats sound very productive to me and I like the pick up for his potential at NT long term.

Here is a break down of his senior year game stats. He had 82 tackles, 61 solo tackles, and 8 sacks

Also this kid is very different from Darius smith, Cory King, and Briscoe. Brown has been a top performer in his league for several years and that is what you want to see in a player; does he dominate lesser competition in Brown's case the answer is yes.

Joe Browns High School career stats at Paramount
116 solo tackles, 155 tackles, 6 tackles per game, 14 sacks, 4 caused fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery

this thread is all that is wrong with message boards in a nutshell. a bunch of lawyers, accountants, salesman, construction workers and students acting like football coaches.

i have no idea what most of you do for a living but it seems like most of you must be football coaches or former players with the way you all evaluate film. i know there are a few guys that play football coach in real life on the board but come on.

Sooooo, let me get this straight, we aren't allowed to evaluate/critique players based on their highlight film? Or only if it's positive? Man please, that's why the board is here so we can have this discussion. Yes he has great size but with that size he isn't dominating kids half his size, some of which he's actually getting drove off the ball but I guess we have to be in a coaching position or be a former collegiate player/professional player to be able to see this.

it is ok to have an opinion but guys are just flat out positive they see a guy that can't play from these tapes. i just find it hard to believe guys are that good at evaluating tape to make some of the statements i am reading.

And I refuse to believe that you are good at most of the things you critique in your own life. But humans still do. This notion that you have to be some sort of expert to be able to have a non-positive opinion on football is for the birds. Do I have to be a computer expert to know that a certain computer is a piece of crap? Do I need to be a doctor to know that a certain doctor sucks at practicing medicine?

It seems all the other "experts" in the computer/medical field think very highly of him.. I'll take their word over yours.

Evidenced by his zero star rating. Gotcha.

Those comparing this to Figs, not even close. Figs was destroying guys in his video.

Cmon man.

Stars matter.. really, they do.
Stars seem to matter for other teams. FSU doesn't seem like they are struggling with all of their 4 and 5 stars.

But you know what, I'll give you that argument anyway. I guess every school except UTEP (and us) is gonna be wrong on evaluating this guy. He is gonna shock the world.

So let's review here:
1) Zero star prospect
2) Recruited by UTEP and Miami

I'm still lost as to where all of these "experts" who "think very highly of him" are at?

Not my style to knock high school kids but this kid is not D1 material yet alone Miami material. Guessing the staff took him to have peace of mind depth wise at the oh so weak DT position.

Just end the thread. He's a no name prospect who will add size to our weakest position. If he gets on the field great, if not he will push guys around in practice and make them better. You guys are acting like he's the only DT we signed. Welcome to the U kid!

I got lost amongst the crybabies and women on their periods I forgot the most important thing..Welcome to TheU big fella! Glad you got right before you got left!

Does giving this kid a scholarship really cost us much? No. Is there the potential that down the road he ends up becoming valuable to us? Possibly. But here's the problem - this staff has consistently missed out on the top level DTs and has had to resort to adding "guys with potential if we can get them in the weight room" and "guys that have size and can add depth" and has had to play those guys in our DT rotation (Darius Smith, Corey King, Justin Renfrow). Or, those guys have been so average that they've not been able to see the field and have been passed up by other average plays or have left the program (Briscoe, Ivery, etc.).

This staff has simply not given any indication that they have the ability to identify "diamond in the rough" players or project guys that will contribute down the road. So, I have a really tough time saying "hey, let's give the staff the benefit of the doubt because maybe they see some real potential in this guy" because that hasn't happened so far. Based on the guys that they've brought in, it's much more likely that this kid will end up not making an impact and will either end up getting passed up by some other late addition. Obviously, I hope that's not the case so far this staff hasn't given us any reason to have faith in their DT recruiting.

Cool, for every one of those kids I can give you a few encyclopedias worth of no stars that ended up living up to their ranking.

If you're expecting every crappy, under-recruited, physically underwhelming, bum off the street to morph into some success story and solid contributor, you're living in lala land. Play the odds and statistics. There's a reason the top classes are usually the top teams.

I love how most of the braintrust of CIS proves their points with outliers and extreme examples.
