New 2014 DT Signee; Joe Brown

I watched the Hudl highlights and the ESPN ones both...the ESPN highlights might be the best 5-6 plays the kid made all year long as a HS Junior in a video that lasted a little over a minute. The Hudl highlights show more warts that have been pointed out (lacks strength, doesn't fire off the ball well, plays too high, doesn't get push into the backfield, etc).

I understand wanting to hold this scholly back and put it against sanctions to help the '15/'16 recruiting classes, that's probably what I would have rather they done than take Brown. But...if the staff thinks he can be developed, and can contribute on down the road--it's on them to do make it happen. As long as the kid's work ethic is in the right place, they've got a shot at making him into a player.

This kid's frame screams DT, and you can't teach size...and a lot of the shortcomings that were pointed out can be fixed either via the weight room or coaching up proper technique. On a positive note--in the ESPN clip, you can see a couple of times where he gets leverage, gets his hands inside, and extends his arms to get push into the backfield...so he is capable of doing the things that a good DT tends to do. He just needs to get better, stronger, and more consistent. He'll get at least 2 years to develop before he's pressed into service (if he ever sees the field, that is).

On the negative side, this isn't quite Delmar Taylor, but it's close. He's raw, and who knows if the staff can develop him. He'll need the 2 years of development I mentioned to make him at least serviceable.
I don't quote myself often, but in the spirit of fairness...here was my whole post re: Joe Brown (and not the parsed "you can't teach size"). I was trying to be hopeful, but I definitely approached his signing with a lot of skepticism. Also - this was supposedly when we were taking him as a DT and not an OG, and my thoughts only got worse about him as a take when I found out we were looking at him as a G.

Shocking turn of events: fat, unathletic blob accomplishes nothing at major program, transfers.

Who saw this career coming for a recruit nobody wanted and whose highlight tape looked like a tranquilized black bear trapped on an ice rink?

You must feel pretty dumb then because the kid started three games and played in seven.... Pretty far off on your evaluation . He played and contributed, which all the idiots who went out of their way to bash the kid, neglect to aknowledge. I guess it's more fun to be the negative sarcastic know it all.
