A few years before I went to UPenn, there was a huge incident that has its own Wikipedia article, where one of the students was kicked out for calling a group of African American female students "water buffaloes".

The student was eventually was reinstated after a massive public discussion over the case. But if you read the Wikipedia discussion, it clearly shows that if they could have demonstrated an intent to intimidate, the university would have continued with the expulsion. So, yes, there is precedence for a University kicking someone out for actions like this. And guns in front of a young black man who was lynched clearly shows intent to intimidate.

Go back and re-read the story.

The sign was shot up. They defaced it (may be hard to prove, but that's why they took the photo, to either rightly or falsely claim credit). Defacing Emmett Till memorials is somewhat of a sport in Mississippi, it's been happening for years.

It's not "3 dudes randomly standing in front of a random memorial while randomly holding guns".
I didnt know they shot it up so theres clearly racial motivation. To be honest, i still view this as silly and dont think their lives should be ruined for it. I hope they grow from it.

After they get expelled? then what? is it a lifetime ban? or would a 1year expulsion be enough retribution for you? do you want them banned from all universities?

What is the purpose? Try going to law school, then maybe you can comprehend what it is like to discuss hyotheticals. You give examples for purposes of analyzing what is similar or different in each outcome, and trying to determine why. And you clearly do not understand the definition of "comparable". Here's a hint, it's not the same as "identical" or "equal" or "same".

Tried looking this up. While there does appear bullet holes in the sign from the picture, there is nothing I have seen yet saying they were the ones who put it there. If there was proof they shot it then there would probably be more to the story saying they are being fined and/or arrested.

Schools have kicked out kids for violating a code of conduct. Maybe the code of conduct at ole miss doesn’t include damaging that sign. What they did carries a lot of historic and symbolic significance.
Other schools have in theirs code of conduct specific language to avoid and expel students for acts like this.
I’m sure if a student at another school poses in front of a holocaust monument off campus with a gun after he shot it up he would be kicked out.
I’m pointing out that it’s legal. I’m also pointing out that ole miss doesn’t have anything in its code of conduct to expel or suspend students that perform act like this.
They said it themselves. They were not on campus. A code of conduct that included content based speech restrictions off campus would almost certainly be unconstitutional.

If they could show that the kids actually shot the holes in the sign, they’d probably have unlawful action to pair with the speech (posing, image) and maybe that would be sufficient.

Those kids may well be racist scumbags - sure looks that way - but state institutions have to respect the constitution and individual rights.

hello, indian-american here, the other guy is right and you are showing your *** right now. “indian” is not a race- the subcontinent is composed of a wide range of ethnicities, from tamil to arab to the various adivasis.
So Tamil is a race?

For that matter, ‘white’ comprises a heck of a lot of ethnicities and subgroups also. Asia is a continent, not a race, and there are a heck of a lot of different subgroups amongst people who used to be labeled oriental. And there are many subgroups in Africa and amomgst people of African descent, from a genetic perspective.

Race isn’t a scientific concept, is the issue - and one of the reasons racism is so stupid. Race is a colloquialism. It’s a way for people to group others.

But the comment I responded to accepted the construct of race, and claimed to own the definitions of what the races are (x and y aren’t races). It’s a tough argument, unless there are real scientific definitions of races to debate, which I do not believe to be the case.

Let them figure out how to get into another school, if another school will take them. A hate crime should have consequences. Why should they be allowed back to a community they've betrayed -- and I think it's fair to expect that every person of color on that campus will feel betrayed by them?

I believe in second chances. But they're beyond that when it comes to their existing community. Time to move on and repair the harm they've done elsewhere.

Youre joking right? The dudes are clearly racist but broke no laws and shouldnt have their lives ruined for being idiots.

Malcolm x hated white people and is celebrated at historically black colleges.

Usually I don’t chime in to these types of topics b/c it’s pointless, but I wish ppl would get the story of Malcolm X correct:

Malcolm X did not hate Caucasians; he hated the injustices that were imposed by Caucasians on to the African-American community, in particular, the “justice system” one who he fell victim to himself. However, he began to equate all Caucasians as being unjust, and began to promote Black unity & empowerment. His views of the Caucasian community were slighted by his own personal experiences, and what he witnessed happened to other African-American men & women.

Part of the reason he was taken out by his own religious group & FBI, allegedly, was due to his change of views regarding race relationships. The hate he once embraced was substituted by love & tolerance for all. He came to his own conclusions after his worldly experience that Whites, Blacks, Arabs can all be brothers. So in essence, you can say he grew up w/ a better understanding of life, but he was also taken out b/c of it, as well

It’s 2019, this close to being 2020. Whoever’s racist now is a dumb muthafcka, str8 up. This whole skin color thing is dumb af.

Facts: Ain’t no such thing as a pure race. The whole propaganda of keeping “The Aryan Race” pure, is bull chit. First off, some secular/biblical facts; Aryans came from the blood line of Gomer, who was the grandson of Noah. While not specified, Noah was born somewhere w/in, what we know today, as the Arab Nation. So again, how is the Aryan bloodline “pure?”

We all have a little different ethnicities w/in us, b/c we are ALL connected in some way, shape, or form. Some just have more melanin than others based upon geographical locations. ****, this 12 yr old girl in 2012 just connected that 43 of the 44 Presidents (prior to Trump) were ALL related by one man, and that included Obama!!!

It’s not cool, it’s not funny, and it’s just ignorant to be a racist prick in 2019, and that goes for Latinos, Caucasians, African Americans, Native Americans, Africans, Jews, HUMAN BEINGS.

If there wasn’t diversity, we wouldn’t have the foods we enjoy so much here! Could u imagine how boring it would be to eat hamburgers, hotdogs, and apple pie everyday??

It’s time to wake up; we can be so much better if we stop looking at the outside of ppl, in general.

Why can't we be friends? Why can't we be friends?
laugh.webp

You make some good points, but you are also glossing over some important points. You are explaining Malcolm X based on your understanding of him. You may be right, but the fundamental issue here is whether the sin is the meaning others take from the photo, or the intent of the people involved. If it is the former - which is what the current generation believes based on their notion of offenses - then Malcolm X was scary because he talked about violence, guns, bullets, bad white people, bad Jews, etc. And many people back then were genuinely scared or offended. But your point is context matters. And I tend to agree. But no one here is asking about context. It may sound like a ridiculous objection because we all think the photo here speaks for itself - and perhaps it does. Yet people thought Malcolm X talking about violence spoke for itself also.

Other examples: people who wear Che Guevara t shirts. Guy was a mass murderer. Why is that less offensive than this photo of these kids? How about Mao shirts? Guy killed what, 35 million Chinese? Yet folks walk around on campuses with his image or iconography at times. The degree of offense is a function of who is offended, and what’s socially acceptable, I guess. But that is why state institutions should stay away from punishing people for their ‘speech,’ whether it’s a che shirt, a malcolm x shirt, a mao shirt or a confederate flag shirt. People can believe what they want, and live with the _social_ consequences of their expressions of belief. But government should mind its role, imo.

If I had known your ego was this fragile I would have engaged you differently and for that I apologize.

You seem pretty upset. Hurling insults and whatnot.

You have an interesting perception of what "adult discussions" are supposed to be like.

Hilarious passive-aggressive post. "Hurling insults and whatnot". No, I'm just accurately describing you. A person who confuses "using an example in a hypothetical" with "equating two things". And telling me I'm backpedaling? You are one funny dude. You wade into waters that are too deep for your abilities, and then try to act like everyone else is wrong.

Good stuff. Sorry that I exposed your inability to use logic properly.

**** brother, that preachy stuff can go so far. I hope you don't fall off your high horse...
Plus, why you still rocking your slave name?

Am I being preachy or do you just hate reality. We all here have different personalities and view points. America is a country of free speech CORRECT. If I'm spoiling yor high just block me. I keep Bible law. I'm not your hypocritical pastor.

The reality is that their lives will NOT be "ruined for it". There will be plenty of companies in Mississippi lining up to give these guys jobs. For the next 70 years, these three guys will be heroes in certain white circles in Mississippi. Please feel free to name ANY exposed white racist in the south who has had his life "ruined".

Byron de la Beckwith was a successful salesman for his entire adult life, and at the same time he frequently bragged about shooting Medgar Evers. Four years after murdering Medgar Evers, Byron de la Beckwith ran (unsuccessfully) for Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi.

That's the kind of life that exposed racists usually lead in the south. Maybe not Florida, but elsewhere.

Ok, so why stop at expulsion. If a hate crime is so bad, why not death penalty? Why not take them permanently them out since they are beyond second chances?

Kinda negates your whole point ehh?

Your argument should be establishment vs the rest of us.
Don't play games. This comment was in response of someone stating:"Obama was president so things have changed."He was a figure head . No different than Clarence Thomas being in the Supreme Court.
Since you wanna jump in and not mind your business. Please tell me what Obama did, besides pass *** marriage rights for us? 😁😁
