Jaden Harris #7

There's not good and then there's absolutely ******* terrible, these guys are way worse than i thiught they'd be.
We knew what we were getting (or what we weren't getting) with #7. Slow, unathletic, bad in pass coverage, decent tackling, physical at times. We were just hoping for the best with him and he's been worse than advertised outside of the UF game. He didn't even look that good against them, but he tackled well.

I'm actually more disappointed with Meesh Powell. He was supposed to be a difference maker back there. He looked pretty good against the first four bums we played. Has looked just as bad as #7, if not worse, since the South Florida game.

Playing lost. Not comfortable with what he sees or not prepared. Poor instincts as well.

Didn’t start playing football until some point in HS and safety is usually an experience and football IQ type of position. Probably need to see more Zaquan after the bye.
Can he play safety? (Coach D voice ) lol
I agree on zaquan

There are a few other big plays he gave up in this game alone too…. Liability get him off the field but seriously, it’s getting ridiculous

I think it's getting obvious that this secondary truly lacks overall speed. We also lack elite level physical tools among those playing the majority of snaps thus far. All this on top of being very mediocre in terms of pure football talent.

We all knew that the secondary was a weakness coming into the season. However, being fans we hoped that after losing Kam, JW, J.Davis and T.Couch it would somehow be addition by subtraction. The first 3-4 games only served to reenforce that fantasy. Now that the last 2 games have snapped us out of our trance we are beginning to see that things on the back end could be worse than we had expected.

To me this is a combination of several factors each contributing to the overall problem. First you have the issue I mentioned above which is mediocre talent plus a lack of speed and physical tools. Secondly is the fact that this secondary is playing sloppy undisciplined football. We are consistently fooled by simple misdirection, motion and overall eye candy. Players are either getting confused and not knowing their assignments, getting caught up in the heat of the moment and losing focus and/or playing hero ball and freelancing and none of it is acceptable going forward.

I know the OP has Jaden Harris as the subject and he has certainly been part of the problem but he is only one part of a much bigger issue. Losing Damari Brown at Nickle has hurt us for sure and getting him back will certainly help because the Daryl Porter experiment at Nickel is not working. Porter needs to move back outside for good. Also Jadais Richard is a major liability and a big play waiting to happen(Even moreso than Harris). I have no clue how he gets so many snaps. Guidry needs to move Meesh to Nickle part time since we still need him at Safety. Meesh has average speed and physical tools but he's experienced with leadership skills. There are other examples but I think these should suffice.

Lastly, Guidry needs to reevaluate what he is currently doing in the secondary in terms of coverage etc.. IMHO, Guidry needs to simplify things for his secondary and emphasize eye discipline and discipline in general. I think going to more zone coverages is something worth considering. I know that he is aggressive by nature but maybe Guidry should consider mixing in more conservative softer zone coverage while the front four gets after it while blitzing less frequently. Implementing something like this on 3rd and long would be a great start. We cannot keep failing to get off the field on 3rd and a mile because we got gashed by a screen. That is inexcusable! Just keep it in front of you and it's OK to give up 10 yards on 3rd and 15.

Another thing I would like to see to address our issues in the secondary is to start playing the young kids more. 2 of our fastest CBs Robert Stafford and Robbie Washington rarely play but would instantly infuse some much needed speed into our secondary. They are also very athletic and naturally talented. Play them more. At Safety, both Zaquan Patterson and Dylan Day have both been standouts on Special Teams. They also need more snaps from scrimmage. These 4 are either very young or true freshman so playing them more comes with the inevitability of typical freshman mistakes and it won't be a magical panacea that cures all.

I don’t have time to read that previous post. But I’ll say this. I won’t ever miss Couch. Lol
I agree on playing markeith more, he’s proven he can play and we need a ball hawk type back there. Zaquan looked lost in the PT he got against USF if I recall correctly.
I do think we should put Harris back at corner. 25 and 19 are not playing well.

You gotta remember they had two weeks to prepare, we had a short week and a 2500 mile trip across the country. Our LBs couldn’t get lined up right most of the game.

All in all, the book is out on us. Press the edges of this D and a seam will open up. Force Cam to play the patient game and he’ll force it. It’ll be interesting to see how our “self scouting” changes the second half of the year against better teams.

linebacker play been a bit iffy too, I think popo should be in there he looks like an SEC linebacker out there when I watch that dude. Pause
Without question. Facts! We need to start seeing the development of Mario's LB recruiting sooner than later. Popo has really stood out minus that 4th and 1 play vs Cal where he lost track of the RB but he's young so mistakes will happen. Popo definitely needs to play more. I would also like to see Bobby Washington get more snaps as well as Chase Smith. I would also like to see more of Cam Pruitt and Adarius Hayes after the bye.

Popo has been playing lights out right now

Harris plays as if he has safety help and isn’t the actual safety. Overly aggressive coming downhill getting him out of position. This leaves Powell having to clean up from the other side of the field. Brown likely helps as he is a big DB that can cover a ton of ground. When we stopped being overly aggressive in the second half, we kept everything in front of us and they only had a few plays over 5 yards. That should be the blue print: bend don’t break. Force every team to beat us with 8-12 play drives. Our D is pretty good in the red zone so let them get to the red zone and clamp down. Trade 3 attempts for our TDs.

This exactly 💯

#7, #19, #25, #0.. all liabilities....
Let’s not forget number one - Kiko, his overall play has been below average since his first year here and I think the only reason why he’s starting because it could affect his brother playing left tackle and dippin’ if his brother gets benched at middle linebacker

Correct me if I’m wrong but he’s been like this since game one at uf. Took a horrible angle that led to the long td run.

Dude has been buns all season.
I remember people bring that up and everyone else leaned on what Guidry said and roasted those who blamed Harris lol It was obvious Guidry was just trying to protect him.

why haven´t we been playing Frederique more?
Yeah I don't get it. Beyond his coverage abilities he's made numerous plays staying disciplined on misdirection plays this year, which killed us against Cal.

IIRC he had a couple of issues lining up correctly against VT, so maybe there's some issues with him fully understanding the defense, but from what I've seen last few weeks not knowing your assignment is par for the course for this D

agreed. bend-but-don't-break + assignment-sound is definitely the best we can hope for with the personnel we're working with this season. and if we can pull it off we'll have a much easier time winning games in the regular season. conference championships + playoffs will potentially be a different story, but that's a problem we have to earn the right to, and if we can't eliminate the big plays on defense there's a fair chance we don't get there at all. it's been playing with fire the past two weeks.

Yeah, I hated the Manny defense of gap penetration (no gap integrity) up front with soft zone and double coverage in the backfield. But you have to do that with these DBs. They're just not able to handle more complex press plus zone schemes as a cohesive secondary unit.
