Ryan Williams will be the game 1 starter next year. If he can hold the job remains to be seen.

But I dont think our staff is going to want a true or redshirt freshman to be the starter in week 2 when we go into Lincoln, Nebraska.

True. We won our first National Championship with a redshirt freshman, but we don't want to do that again.

Great example. Thanks for bringing this up.

Yes, Bernie was a freshman in 1983 and YES, Bernie went on the road @ uf and got his *** handed to him- Canes lost 28-3 in his first road game as a starter.

So are you saying that you are willing to build in a blowout loss @ Nebraska to the 2014 schedule just so Olson can get some seasoning?

Or were you just dipping into the Maker's bottle a lil too early on Monday?? :)

However it works out we will be starting a green qb next year, which is why I was surprised when everyone was saying 2014 was going to be the year we make a national run.
This is the year. Seasoned, veteran team with talent everywhere.

Why do you think olsen will start in 2014. Reports by the writers at camp are saying he looks horrible and has real weak arm. Hopefully he was hurt to begin camp

Feel free to link these mysterious reports at any point

I remember hearing that Olsen was not yet ready for prime time. That might have come from Al Golden in response to a question from a writer. But nowhere have I heard anything to the effect that he "looks horrible" or "has [a] real[ly] weak arm." Anyone desiring a link can search for it himself. Happy hunting.

Although I dont 'fully' disagree with your point, Ryan Williams started nine games as a true freshman at Memphis State. He will be in his 4th year in our program if/when he is named starter next year. I expect him to get a fair amount of reps throughout this season starting with the entire second half against Savannah State. I wouldnt say he'll be completely green but yeah, Im with you.

the only problem i have...is when they bring Ryan in they sdo so with a watered down playbook...where all he may do is throw off of play action bootlegs.

I'd like to see him line up in the shotgun against Sav State and sling it a bit like he did for Memphis freshman year.....i may have seen the most of Ryan Williams as he and my younger cuz are best friends...ive been watching dude play since like his 9th grade yr. Doesnt have a big arm, but he is accurate in the mid range game.

THIS

He's solid and with the play makers that should be around him next year, he might be the PERFECT game "Manager". I wouldn't sleep on him. He has as good a shot as anyone currently on the roster to start next year. Go Canes

I have actually been impressed by RW in the footage I have seen from the practice reports. He seems to be a great teammate and a smart kid. I guess I am in the minority in thinking we will be just fine with him. He will be a great game manager who does a great job of getting the ball to the playmakers to let them make plays, just as he grew up doing.... Just my .02

Williams blows. Does anyone not remember the UNC game? The same people that are kidding themselves with Williams are the same ones that said Kirby aint that bad after he beat FSU. Then came the NC State game. Ugh.

Do you guys really trust Williams to lead us? like gogeta said his arm isn't the strongest and the playbook would have to be water downed. We aren't as talented as the 2000-2003 teams. Its going to be Duke's last year along with Chick, DP(If he stays). Deon's, TH3(if he keeps playing the way he is playing) and McCord. Oh yeah it going to Scott's and Dorsett's senior year.

I'm sorry, do not want, I still haven't recovered from the last Coker we had here at UM to have another one here. The pain is just too much, I don't even want to have to think about the possible flashbacks I'll have of those last years with Coker every time this Coker's name is mentioned. It's still too soon, too soon

I mean Ryan Williams in the UNC game, he was put into a tough situation to succeed. Basically had to come in the game cold and try to win it.

Not many are going to succeed in that.

He's accurate with very good decision making skills. I have to believe that his throwing mechanics can be improved to the point where he's got enough arm strength. I remember reading that coach Coley was working with him on improving his throwing mechanics.

Interestingly, it seems that Olson and Williams have the same skillets; good game managers with subpar arm strength. Given that, I tend to favor the senior over the freshman.

Dont believe those reports about Olson having a subpar arm....has a good arm, not sure where this weak arm stuff is coming from.

He doesnt have a cannon but it's not weak either....as strong as Manziel and McCarrons arm, good enough for what he will need to do here.

I will be surprised if Olson is not the starter next year, if Williams is the guy good defenses will feast on his passes and he will need very good protection from the OL to succeed.

Were talking about Nebraska here, this is not some elite team, they will also be breaking in a qb and we are a more talented team all round, i don't understand what people's fear is...Nebraska isn't even a top 25 team, and again, true and redshirt freshman qbs start all across the country, the nation's leading passer is a true freshman, besides he'll have duke and a bunch of people to throw to

Lost in this discussion is Gray Crow. He could be a factor in all of this...

...because he might take enough reps away from Olson to give an edge to Williams in the spring/summer.

Stranger things have happened.
