Finally Admit Lanning > Mario

Ward is an excellent QB ... and he was an excellent QB at his prior school ... but didn't have the success there due to NOT being surrounded by a high quality support cast (OL, WR, RB, TE's). Mario put together the roster that produced the #1 ranked offense in the country in 2024 ... if he had done half as well in stocking the defensive roster (and staff) UM would be playing in the CFP. Very disappointing melt down .... but predictable given the defensive staff lack of development and in game adjustments (maddening). Let's see how Mario reacts.

This is the slippery slope that Canes’ fans find themselves when they try to attribute Lanning’s success w/ Mario.

Our best TE was a Manny player
Our best WR was a Manny player
Our 2nd best WR was a Manny player
Our best specialist was a Manny player
Our best RG was a Manny player

Now here’s the thing, I just told this board in 2022 Lanning had to flip the QB, RBs, & secondary, yet the narrative is that Mario’s players helped Lanning. Here’s the tricky part, it’s true Mario flipped the QB, RB, & several along the OL via the portal & recruiting, but no is giving credit to Manny & his players for literally being the best on the team.

And I 100% agree w/ u on the defense, but here’s the irony; the Defense was all him. When the last of Manny’s “undisciplined” players left, it got exposed butt naked when the calendar flipped to ACC play.

This is why I would rather for this thread to die vs. really exposing hypocrisy, redundancy, & straw man arguments.

This is why people are increasingly irked:
- No in game adjustments on D, just attitude and excuses.
- Predictable: week in and week out
- Predictable: overrated when it comes to development
- Predictable: the roster was in dire need of defensive help for more than one cycle
- Predictable: Mario loses at least 1 to 2 games a year against lesser squads

Mario should have already had reactions to these known issue, but let us see how he reacts this time.
Add in that nobody wants to watch their team play like crap for the first half,, then win at the last minute. These games were frustrating even when we won.

True story. I didn’t see the discipline from Mario that I thought we would see. All this who what where when and why is just so exhausting

Lanning had to succeed AS A COORDINATOR running the defense at the top program in the SEC. Mario never had that facet of personal development in his career.
Is that a criteria?

Neither did Harbuagh or Dabo, just saying!

Mario was the AHC for three years under Saban, you would think he would know how to build a cohesive, well oiled staff.

Was a lot easier recruiting to Bama with Saban and that Bama staff ... and being in the SEC ... than 2024 in the ACC. Criteria? No. Does it HELP to have a HC who is very knowledgeable on either offense or defense ... absolutely.

As a fan, looking back at the season it was more or less downhill after the UiF game. Some peaks and valleys along the way for sure, but 41-17 was the high point. Not just emotionally, but from a quality of play perspective, too. Kind of wild that our most complete game against decent competition was week 1.

Sure. If it is Cam Ward and only Cam Ward, why did Cam Ward's team go 5-7 the year before? Since, you know, he wins games by himself.
We have seen what Miami and Cristobal has been before Ward. Next year is year 4, he will have all of his players that he took in recruiting and the portal. We will see definitively what Mario is about once and for all without Ward. He goes back to 6 or 7 wins, then even the most positive fans will have their answer about Mario and his future here (or at least they should).

Agreed. I killed Manny mercilessly for similar performance. I would be a hypocrite if I simply ignored Mario’s incompetence as well. We have to be fair, Mario has done jack sh*t here. And he is getting paid like the second coming of Christ..

They had a schedule ranked in the 90's last year. They scored 7 points against Stanford. 6 against Arizona. Miami won 10 games because of more than just Cam Ward.

Mario was .500 before Cam Ward came in because he had worse players on those teams. Was that a real question? This will shock you, but literally every coach in the country wins more games when they have better players.
So the difference was Cam then. That’s what I was saying. Roster is the same. Who did we lose?

We will find out next year because he’s gone. It’s going to be a long year. That’s why people are upset. Everything aligned for us this year. Cam, everybody coming back, cupcake schedule. This looks like Mario’s ceiling unfortunately

This is what I keep saying. This was the peak of the Mario Cristobal Era and alas we didn't get to the ACC championship game let alone win the ****. With all of that in our favor.

if you’ve heard lanning speak about how selective he was regarding where he’d go you know he wouldn’t have come here. That will tel you all you need to know about our situation 3 years ago.

This right here. Those teams will not repeat the success they’ve had this year. They don’t recruit to do that (some would say we don’t either). But they’re definitely not in that conversation.

Imagine this fan base if Mario could only reach the playoffs once every five years and finish with 6-8 wins the other years? I don’t think he would even last five years here.
You're both making the assumption that SMU/Indiana won't repeat the success they've had this year. We don't know whether they will, but we do know they both made the playoff this year while we didn't.

Also Rhett's been at SMU for 3 years and they've gotten better each year. So have we, but they made the ACC title game and the playoff this year. We didn't. He took over a program in much better shape than Mario did, but, again he accomplished more this year than Mario did.

All we had to do was either beat a good team that couldn't throw the ball that week or beat a good team we were leading 21-0 and we'd be in the playoffs. We didn't.

I don't think Mario has done a bad job here, and while I have some concerns, I'm optimistic that he'll continue to improve the program. But Lanning/Lashlee/Cignetti have all done a better job than him. They made the playoff; Mario didn't - perhaps in the most excruciating way possible too.

Y’all can rate Lanning higher than Mario if you want but having seen the last 3 weeks of Lane Kiffin that dude currently is the biggest loser in the game.

Some of yall wanted him here and I don’t want that type of ho activity anywhere near this program again.

Stay on topic...this was about Lanning vs Mario, not Lane Kiffin. For those who say we'll see next year, have you looked at the schedule? At best, we're looking at 7-5
