DC Candidates(post 2024 season)

I agree at this point, we gut the operation. After the public stoning this unit has justifiably taken, it’s just best for everyone to change it up.

When I say I don’t think it’s entirely on Guidry, I’m suggesting that our evaluations and development under Mario aren’t what I expected to this point - especially from such high recruiting classes + overall portal evaluations. I think Harris + Powell is eons worse than Kitchens + JW. I think OJ was crowned a star prematurely, but also realize he’s a TF and was asked to play an extremely tough role all season long. That is due to a reoccurring DB problem that hasn’t been properly developed and fixed in three full seasons.

Also want to note, I think he has talent and I hope the next DC can fully get it out of him. Could be a good eval, tbd on the development.

Our DE’s were very disappointing. No consistent pass rush. Regressed as the season went on. Bain, what happened man? Mesidor just banged up from surgeries, but not the same player. Has to slide inside because of yet another reoccurring problem on defense, DT’s…bad evals in the winter, thank god for Barrow because the freshmen weren’t ready.

So yes, I do think Guidry needs to go. But I also think that the talent on that side of the ball either hasn’t emerged, or has been vastly overhyped again. Either thought process leads you to the same destination - it’s not good enough.
I agree with your assessment 100%. Personally I think that you hit in on the head regarding the evals/development with a lot of the players on defense. Overall however I believe that got to these levels of complete and ineptitude on defense through the perfect storm of talent level on defense being grossly overestimated plus a DC who was exposed as being clearly in over his head at this level from an X's and O's schematic/teaching and adjusting standpoint and unable to come up with any answers. Yes, the entire defensive staff needs to go. I saw zero evidence of a good position coach being obscured by that joke of a defense.

P.S. I'll go a little further and say it flat out. If Mario doesn't fire Guidry in the next 48 hours, then he isn't a serious man and we're not a serious program and I don't care how harsh that sounds. Accountability. Right Mario?

I don’t know if the coordinator stuff is going to change anytime soon. We SHOULD get rid of Guidry, but if we do, that’s 3 DCO coaches in 4 years. What top tier coach is going to come for that?

We also need to reexamine our salary allocation asap. Only OJ would play for other P2 teams (and he prolly wouldn’t have played as much as he did for us).

We don’t have P2 DT either outside some splash plays. Hopefully Scott turns out to be elite, but we need some P2-level DTs.

You do know very good to elite DT'S cost money; whether they are portal or high school recruits. Then you have to budget for adding depth as well at the interior position.

We paid up last year in both HS recruiting & the portal; but in this years OL/DL recruiting Miami appears to be back on a budget in order to spend on the skilled positions.

He’s not firing him. If he even leaves, it’ll be a situation where be finds another gig etc

Initial thoughts:

I at least try to talk to Morgan Scalley (Utah). He is supposed to be the head coach in-waiting, but if Whittingham ends up prolonging this impending retirement and Scalley gets antsy, we should at least attempt a borderline ludicrous offer and see if there’s any shot. Get some Poly’s too.

I’d entertain the following:

Tony White (Nebraska) - bag, do it.
Pete Goulding (Ole Miss)
Tony Gibson (NC State)
Bryant Haines (Indiana)
Wes Goodwin (Clemson) - If Dabo falls apart
Tim Banks (Tennessee)
Bill Brechin (Miami OH)
Vince Kehres (Toledo)

I want to poach, not reach. But I do like these last two MAC guys a lot. Kehres was Mount Union’s HC and went 95-6 from 2013-2019. He knows how to win, two natty’s, son of an hall of famed. The guy can coach, and his defenses have bailed out Candle numerous times.

Amen on the poach not reach. I just don’t know how many worth a **** DCs will leave their spot to come coach for Mario. His reputation isn’t exactly the best 🥴.

Also, Tony White is apparently is serious candidate at FSU.

Whole defensive staff needs to be gutted, and if that
Means JT so be it. All of the defensive line was terrible. Mesidor playing DT all season was laughable.

On D, it is imperative that you recruit smart players, coachable players. We have DB’s running around seconds before the the snap looking lost and not knowing where they should be. IN THE 12th GAME. That is mostly on coaching.

Nate Woody. Army. #1 red zone defense. And he does it with incredibly limited talent through good coaching and discipline.
I wasn't sure if he had ties with Army specifically. I do think he could bring discipline and a change in culture on the defensive staff

Couple of DC’s options:

Chris Marve -VT
Tyler Santucci -Ga Tech
Chris Hampton -Oregon
Travis Williams -Arkansas
Brad White -Kentucky

Bill Berchin -Miami OH
Clay Bignell -So Miss
Addison Williams -UCF
