DC Candidates(post 2024 season)

I want to take some time here because Mario has to get this one right. Steele was not a good fit, and even though I don’t think this is entirely on Guidry, he’ll ultimately be the culprit.

Nonetheless, it sounds like your third DC in four years, and not because of success. Again, he has to get this hire right.

Plus, there’s rumors him and the defensive staff don’t get along. Specifically JT.

So, I expect multiple coaches on the defense to leave.

There’s also a possibility JT is promoted, which I’m not sure I’d love. If we put our money where our mouth is, we should be poaching, not reaching.
"Plus, there’s rumors him and the defensive staff don’t get along. Specifically JT."

Where are you seeing this?
Honest question.

It’s just rumors. Someone else with more knowledge can confirm or deny it if they please, just sharing a tidbit I’ve now heard from two different people that do not know each other. Could be bs.

Could just be an excuse to get him out. I don’t put too much stock into it.

Im not a mope...more a cautionary optimist or borderline realist.

With that said, I'm not sure if trust mario to make a good hire on D. His last two hires have been super questionable.

Additionally, controlling position coaches and not letting the coordinator make his own calls is concerning.

Mario doesn't deserve to be fired, but we also know we will never win anything important with him.

Is this what I purgatory feels like?
But CIS loved both hires

And just to be clear since I'm slow..you meant Mario not getting along with the defensive staff correct?

No within the defensive staff regarding playcalling. I’m not sure about Mario and to what extent he’s involved there, I was under the assumption he let his DC’s do as they please.

You said that you don't think this is entirely on Guidry. I would like to see you elaborate on that. Personally, from where I stand, I think the entire defensive staff needs to be gutted. I'm not there behind the scenes so I can't determine who is a good position coach who is only guilty of working under a bad DC. From my point of view this entire defense looks terrible and even the strength of the unit, the defensive line has underachieved.

I agree at this point, we gut the operation. After the public stoning this unit has justifiably taken, it’s just best for everyone to change it up.

When I say I don’t think it’s entirely on Guidry, I’m suggesting that our evaluations and development under Mario aren’t what I expected to this point - especially from such high recruiting classes + overall portal evaluations. I think Harris + Powell is eons worse than Kitchens + JW. I think OJ was crowned a star prematurely, but also realize he’s a TF and was asked to play an extremely tough role all season long. That is due to a reoccurring DB problem that hasn’t been properly developed and fixed in three full seasons.

Also want to note, I think he has talent and I hope the next DC can fully get it out of him. Could be a good eval, tbd on the development.

Our DE’s were very disappointing. No consistent pass rush. Regressed as the season went on. Bain, what happened man? Mesidor just banged up from surgeries, but not the same player. Has to slide inside because of yet another reoccurring problem on defense, DT’s…bad evals in the winter, thank god for Barrow because the freshmen weren’t ready.

So yes, I do think Guidry needs to go. But I also think that the talent on that side of the ball either hasn’t emerged, or has been vastly overhyped again. Either thought process leads you to the same destination - it’s not good enough.

Guidry’s biggest problem is the defense lacks players across the lineup and can’t compensate for weaknesses. Perhaps the X/O posters explain more explain where I’m wrong but I simply don’t think anyone could take that three-deep on defense and make it above average.

The secondary can’t cover and communicate, linebackers can’t read and tackle, and the defensive line often can’t get pressure without stunting.

For goodness sake, whomever the new defensive coordinator is, please have Ruben Bain lose 10-15 pounds and focus on being the elite edge rusher he could be. I don’t understand the fetish for undersized defensive tackles. This and having players like Mesidor drop into coverage. Are the linebackers so bad he a defensive end is better in coverage?

Again, I’m not an X/O guy nor can I evaluate the nuances of playing specific positions but if Guidry has to gimmick to create plays, the defense simply can’t play fundamental football.

Which was proven today and all season.

Initial thoughts:

I at least try to talk to Morgan Scalley (Utah). He is supposed to be the head coach in-waiting, but if Whittingham ends up prolonging this impending retirement and Scalley gets antsy, we should at least attempt a borderline ludicrous offer and see if there’s any shot. Get some Poly’s too.

I’d entertain the following:

Tony White (Nebraska) - bag, do it.
Pete Goulding (Ole Miss)
Tony Gibson (NC State)
Bryant Haines (Indiana)
Wes Goodwin (Clemson) - If Dabo falls apart
Tim Banks (Tennessee)
Bill Brechin (Miami OH)
Vince Kehres (Toledo)

I want to poach, not reach. But I do like these last two MAC guys a lot. Kehres was Mount Union’s HC and went 95-6 from 2013-2019. He knows how to win, two natty’s, son of an hall of famed. The guy can coach, and his defenses have bailed out Candle numerous times.

don’t like Nate Woody at Army and his #1 red zone defense?

I think he’s doing a tremendous job this season.

I guess I’m just scared off by his bleh year at GT in 2018, giving up 45+ three times, almost 30ppg in totality. Did very well at Wofford, App St and now Army, so his overall résumé is much better now.

I just worry that maybe he’s better at the G5 level? I did find it weird he couldn’t find a DC job anywhere after that GT year, went the analyst route. He’d still be up there for me overall, however.
