buzz heading into saturday

like most of you, I consume a lot of content about the Canes. Both beat and national level. Some are better than others and some agendas vary. All that to say, I try to focus on consistency of information - what intel is being shared regardless of who is sharing it. This is a bit of a fluff piece, but here is what has been consistent from other sources :

1. Ward is a dude
2. Martinez is a dude
3. The re-emergence of Mesidor
4. Overall talent of our DL
5. X Restrepo is our best WR
6. Brown is as advertised
7. Our secondary is a question mark
8. Lyle has emerged as our 3rd back
9. McConathy and Scott’s name come up
10. Barrow and Clark are best DT options

That’s a lot to be excited about. Not perfect. But I have more belief heading into this season than I’ve had in a while

Great post, IMO that gives us 3 more wins, a break here and there and who knows where they could end up.

There isn’t a WAR statistic like baseball, but if there was the question is have we added enough net talent to add 3+ WAR year over year. I get WAR doesn’t quite work that way, but I think it makes the point. How many wins is Cam Ward worth? Martinez? Our DL? I think we have a big opportunity this year.

It's hard to know what you have without tackling to the ground. This is the most optimistic I have been in probably 18 years. It's all on the staff, no excuses. Emory needs to get rid of the ball quicker right now.

not really an infatuation... i was surprised he wasn't even mentioned considering Brashard Smith left and he's been here a year longer than Lyle and CWH....

not expecting him to get a ton of touches but with his skillset and speed, getting him 5 or 6 touches a game at RB or out of the backfield and he can change the game...
Protection is secondary yet still vital out of the backfield. While he's definitely an explosive play waiting to happen, it's not always necessarily on the offensive side of the ball as a result. He's more of a third down back than any of the others we now have with the only possible exception being Allen. Not a knock on him. He's just gotta put on some weight to really be a consistent factor. Otherwise he's at a disadvantage the way the room is being built.

I thought Emory was limited as well but I watched the Clemson game again last night on the ACC Network, and Emory was better than I remembered. And yes I know Dawson protected him all game with easy throws into 1 on 1 coverage, but with UM’s running game that can work. I found myself wondering what JIm Harbaugh could do with Emory. Win the running game, force the defense to leave the corners isolated because the safeties have to help in the run game, and then take occasion shots on the outside.

The other UM has made a living off that for 10 years under Harbaugh. I believe this UM could do the same with Emory at QB.
Considering he was an unheralded true freshman he preformed pretty well. Many of his throws were on crucial 3rd downs (same with FSU) and he maintained poise under difficult circumstances. He gave us a chance to win the games he started, and there's no reason to expect he wouldn't improve in his 2nd year under Dawson with a better supporting cast; it wouldn't surprise me if he was the second best QB at the end of Fall camp, but all things holding true there's no need to burn his shirt this season for meaningless reps.

My expectations are extremely low especially what this program has done in the last 19-20 years. The roster is no doubt one of the most talented in years and we do have some of the most talented players in the country in Ward, Martinez, Bain, Restrepo just to name a few. Week by week approach for me.

Doesn't mean as much in the portal era.
I disagree. How is WR recruiting going for us this year in comparison to teams like OSU and Texas and Oregon that have recruited the position at an elite level?

and we were a second guess away from having Poff as our starting QB,

A rosy outlook, as you'd expect from a pay-site trying to get people to pay for information.

Big thing is they have to stay healthy in the secondary. They're paper thin there with either young players who need time, or just simply more talent and playmaking.

I'm hearing the staff thinks Ward is everything and more. Poff is the backup I'm told, Lake has an agenda with Emory (he doesn't like Poff as the backup and tries to spin it towards Emory all the time). That doesn't mean Emory won't win out and Lake be right, but he has an agenda.

Okunlola has all the gifts, but the light needs to come on. McCoy is a coaches favorite, but the staff needs Okunlola to win that battle for recruiting purposes. He needs to be a big draft pick to sell along with Mauigoa.

Jordan Lyle is someone the staff likes a lot. Lofton will play lots of roles, but as is often the case with the Jack-of-all-trade types, the cumulative numbers won't be substantial.

I'm told the staff is starting to narrow the depth chart and turn the focus to Florida, whom they want to make sure Miami players aren't overlooking.

That's all I have for now.

I agree with pretty much all of this.

Lake does show his bias at times, and I have heard the same as you.

I would expect Poff to be the no. 2 for the opener. Emory has better longer term upside, and eventually will surpass him at some point most likely, but if Poff isn't or wasn't slightly ahead at this time in the summer, I would be a little concerned.

That being said, I'm hearing that both Poff and Emory are doing well, and have made strides since the spring. Emory coming back from his injury, and Poth learning how to be a Miami Hurricane. I have been told also that Judd who has surprised the coaches (to the upside) the same way Emory did last year when he arrived.

My take is still that they would really like to redshirt Emory, which I suspect will happen unless something really comes off the rails.

if players are overlooking Florida, we have the wrong players in the locker room
