Barry Jackson in depth about the defense/D'onofrio

I wish this was our DC

So you wish we had a Super Bowl level DC? Ok, got it. I wish Jimmy Johnson was our player personnel director and that Butch Davis was a GA.

if the offense clicks like it did last year.. a top 40-50 D should get it done for us.. and if we're better than that, we coould be pretty **** good.

This. Our offense should be lethal. Just need our defense to get opponents off the field.

Good stuff.

Some have already written him off, some have been willing to cut him some slack.

Maybe naive but I've been in the "if Golden believes in him I will stick it out" crowd.

That said, no excuses this year.

Give me a top 50 defense and we are winning 10 games, at least

how did the defense improve giving up 41 to one of the worst oefenses in the country in uva and 500+ to duke? you're a ******. from where they started any little positive would be 'improvement,' that doesn't mean any real improvement took place. i guess duke and uva were trotting out all-stars on offense. yawn.

1st 6 games --- YPG = 510
Last 6 games -- YPG = 463

1st 6 games --- PPG = 35
Last 6 games -- PPG = 26

1st 6 games --- 3rd downs converted against = 46%
Last 6 games -- 3rd downs converted against = 39%

1st 6 games --- Yards per play allowed = 11.25
Last 6 games -- Yards per play allowed = 6.23

1st 6 games --- Rush yards allowed per game = 251
Last 6 games -- Rush yards allowed per game = 185

1st 6 games --- Pass yards allowed per game = 260
Last 6 games -- Pass yards allowed per game = 278

Other than pass yards allowed, they improved in every category. That isn't to say that they were good...they weren't. But, statistically, they improved.

I don't get the D'Onofrio bashing. What did people really expect last year? That was a young defense with very little returning depth. It ended up playing 26 players. That is a very high number, a majority of which should have redshirted. Many of them were 4 months removed from high school and they are playing against Junior-Senior heavy teams like KSU, ND, FSU, and UNC.

Perryman was hurt and when he played was not 100%. Eddie Johnson couldn't stay on the field. The safeties at the beginning of the year were WOAT.

The defense never had a chance. Way young (thus undersized in many cases, with zero game experience).

Even this year they will still be young for the most part, especially if Porter or Green gets banged up.

**** all of this.

Being ranked 116 out of 120 teams should never be acceptable. Allowing Rocco for UVA to throw for 300 yards and 4TD's in November? Unacceptable.

I'm not sure anyone has said it was acceptable, but our reality is our reality. Do we need to get better? Absolutely.

We were ranked 82nd, not 116th. Not that 82nd is good, but I get a kick out of the folks with the agendas who love to emphasize yards instead of points, which is the real barometer. We were picked to finish 5th in the Coastal last season and to win 4 or 5 games by all the experts for a reason, and it wasn't because we were stacked with incredible talent and experience.

Very simply it was a perfect storm for a terrible defense

Extremely difficult schedule
Extremely young talent
A scheme that doesn't necessarily coincide with what that young talent does well at this point in there development

Missing Curtis Porter and whenever the freshmen Safeties weren't on the field, the floodgates were open.

25% of the time I probably disagree with D's in-game play-calling and adjustments, otherwise, he gets a mulligan for the past season.

82nd in scoring defense, 116th in total defense. Whatever. We can all agree the defense was abysmal. Even though our talent on defense was really poor, we saw only spotty evidence of improvement through November. By the time the Duke game rolled around, there were no freshmen on the field anymore.

That is what I say, no one is bragging about being the 82nd Defense but cut this **** with the total D.

What's interesting about the UVA game is that our defense kept getting them to 3rd and long last year, but couldn't muster up any kind of pass rush to get off the field. Eventually the plays started to add up, and our lack of depth really got exposed. But when our d was fresh, they played reasonably well (considering the injuries/suspensions).

Adding Devante Bond, Dwayne Hoilett, Quay Muhammed, and putting 30lbs on Tyriq McCord will definitely improve our pass rush. Improve that and we can close out these 3rd and longs, maybe even get a turnover. Then our defense will play fewer snaps, and won't look so ragged in the 4th quarter.

not being discussed is the hurry up offensive philosophy that lowered time of possession which put our already weak defense back on the field to give up more yards than they really should have.
For example everyone brings up the UVA game. But the offense had 2 or 3 opportunities in the 4th qtr to bleed the clock by running and converting 1st downs. They didn't. They passed, dropped balls, stopped clock and failed to convert on 3rd downs giving UVA the ball back.
All this with a defense that was missing it's key defensive players.
Now D'onofrio's coaching prowess is still yet to be determined, but i don't care who was coaching the defense, I don't think the outcome would have been any different.
Despite all this I remember seeing the defense still playing hard and giving it's all- something that had been missing in years past.

Here's to the offensive philosophy changing to more ball controlled when the situation calls for it like it did last year vs UVA.

Offense scores 31 points

It's the offenses fault we lost
Fixed it for you.
Don't play dumb. I never alluded to that. It's a team game. How long have you been following this game? What the offense does affects the defense and what the defense does affects the offense.
UVA's offense scored 41 proving your defense can give up points and yet still win. Why did they win? Their defense gave their offense that ball back with time during a critical point of the game.
Our offense was considered the "Strength" of the team. Not the defense. Everyone knows the defense sucks and was missing key players and should not have been in predicament.
This is when the "Strength" of the team needs to put the outcome of the game on it's shoulders and win the dam game. They didn't. They left it up to a gassed, young, thin defense to win it.
But yeah, let's give the offense a pass cause they scored 31 points.

LULZ at no freshman on the field against Duke. Roll with that agenda, brother. Doesn't matter what we think anyway because Corch Duh' is Alshermond's right-hand man. These dudes are partners, and it's their defense. Al won't be ringing this dude up any time soon.
