Barry Jackson in depth about the defense/D'onofrio

I don't get the D'Onofrio bashing. What did people really expect last year? That was a young defense with very little returning depth. It ended up playing 26 players. That is a very high number, a majority of which should have redshirted. Many of them were 4 months removed from high school and they are playing against Junior-Senior heavy teams like KSU, ND, FSU, and UNC.

Perryman was hurt and when he played was not 100%. Eddie Johnson couldn't stay on the field. The safeties at the beginning of the year were WOAT.

The defense never had a chance. Way young (thus undersized in many cases, with zero game experience).

Even this year they will still be young for the most part, especially if Porter or Green gets banged up.

**** all of this.

Being ranked 116 out of 120 teams should never be acceptable. Allowing Rocco for UVA to throw for 300 yards and 4TD's in November? Unacceptable.

We were ranked 82nd, not 116th. Not that 82nd is good, but I get a kick out of the folks with the agendas who love to emphasize yards instead of points, which is the real barometer. We were picked to finish 5th in the Coastal last season and to win 4 or 5 games by all the experts for a reason, and it wasn't because we were stacked with incredible talent and experience.

That is what I say, no one is bragging about being the 82nd Defense but cut this **** with the total D.

82nd isn't as dramatic as 116th when you're trying to advance and agenda.

What's interesting about the UVA game is that our defense kept getting them to 3rd and long last year, but couldn't muster up any kind of pass rush to get off the field. Eventually the plays started to add up, and our lack of depth really got exposed. But when our d was fresh, they played reasonably well (considering the injuries/suspensions).

Adding Devante Bond, Dwayne Hoilett, Quay Muhammed, and putting 30lbs on Tyriq McCord will definitely improve our pass rush. Improve that and we can close out these 3rd and longs, maybe even get a turnover. Then our defense will play fewer snaps, and won't look so ragged in the 4th quarter.

Bottom line on the UVA game was that if EJ wasn't a selfish knucklehead who **** in his teammates' and the program's faces and got suspended we win that UVA game. He would have made a play here or there when we needed to get off the field at the end.

Of course, but with any kind of pass rush we easily win the game. Next year's D should be greatly improved in obvious pass rushing situations, and that should help a number of others areas as well.

82nd in scoring defense, 116th in total defense. Whatever. We can all agree the defense was abysmal. Even though our talent on defense was really poor, we saw only spotty evidence of improvement through November. By the time the Duke game rolled around, there were no freshmen on the field anymore.

LULZ at no freshman on the field against Duke. Roll with that agenda, brother. Doesn't matter what we think anyway because Corch Duh' is Alshermond's right-hand man. These dudes are partners, and it's their defense. Al won't be ringing this dude up any time soon.

I seem to recall Rayshawn Jenkins (in his first extended playing time) ******* up and giving up a 90+ yard touchdown pass to Duke.

The point is that by game 12, the freshmen aren't freshmen anymore. Golden himself will tell you the same. Perhaps you could make a case for Jenkins not falling into this category as he only got major minutes towards the end. That the defense showed only minimal improvement by the Duke game shows that nothing much was being learned out there for four months.

So Jenkins, who only played a handful of snaps at safety in the first 11 games, is no longer a freshman in game 12?

He sure as **** made a freshman mistake; he must not have gotten the memo that he was officially a sophomore. Maybe that long TD pass was a sophomore mistake.

I Dvr'd the game and as i watched it again there were numerous plays that Armbrister didnt make that EJ would have. They were big plays in the game and would have changed the outcome for sure. I dont know how many times I said EJ would have made that play as I watched it again.

Without a doubt we win that game if EJ plays. When The Millionaire and The Midget are out there logging major minutes at LB at the end of the game you're sunk. Think we missed Deon Bush in that game? Think a healthy Perryman would have helped us? When you're D is already razor thin, you can't afford to lose your 3 best players. LULZ at dudes chanting the "we didn't get better" when, in fact, we got better in every category except pass D. And, most importantly, we were without our 3 best players for the majority of the last few games.

What are they? Freshman with some games under their belt. Most haven't done UTough, most haven't had a proper off season, some should have been redshirtted.

As is every rationalization for having a 116/120 ranked defense.

Further because you seem to be Dorito's white knight, I propose an avvy bet based on our defensive ranking/improvement next year.

I'm late to the party, but would you admit that sometimes there are solid explanations behind statistics?
