Barry Jackson in depth about the defense/D'onofrio

Able says that we were screwed either way by the talent on defense, yet he says we shouldn't have sent 5 or 6 slugs. wellllll, what difference does it make is you're screwed either way!?!??!

"hey, if we send 5 or 6 slugs we'll be 118th in the country instead of 116th!!!!"

I didn't say we shouldn't send 5 or 6 guys.

I'm saying there's a counter for everything.

Would you rather die by jumping out of an airplane, or by jumping out of a helicopter?

We'll find out what Golden/D'Onofrio are all about this year. Top 30 defense.

what does it matter if you die? lol

I view it more as you are about to fight a lion. Would you rather curl up into a ball and hope it tires itself out before murdering you, or fashion together a weapon using your shoelaces, belt, and sticks before charging at it like that dude from Braveheart?

I'm not a fan of the bend and eventually break anyway D we ran. I'd rather come out swinging and create some sacks and turnovers. Like I said, statistically, we could NOT have been worse.

Exactly. So why is errbody trippin' over the scheme? Send 3, send 4, send 5, send 8. The end result is the same. We stink.

Early in 2011, I said it was going to take 2 years to get the defense right. I can probably go dig up the post.

I expect us to be a lot better this year.

Able, should BCC have run over us?

Yeah because of our personnel. But forget about in 08 when we almost beat a chammionship team with a defense of high school kids

We also gave up eleventy billion points to Georgia Tech in '08. So what?

Let's bring back Bill Young. I believe he's available.

Cool one game. We have given up eleventy million points every game for the past 2 seasons.

I understand.

Personally, the two main things I want to see a defense do are:

1. Stop the run
2. Get off the field on 3rd down

I don't really care how that gets accomplished. Heavy pressure, soft zone. Whatever. If you do those two things, you're probably going to be really good on defense.

Don't let teams run the ball right up your ***, and don't let them keep drives alive by converting 3rd downs.

We sucked at both last year. I expect us to be a lot better.

Did the UiF game count for 8 games, or something? We obviously didn't play at the level all year in '08.

Anyway, I get it. You want to fire the coach. I want to wait and see what happens in 2013.

schedule or because you think they'll be a legit top 30 squad?

because at least you went out fighting and not just taking the pipe

Front four has a chance to be really good with Porter as the anchor and guys like McCord, Moore, Ivery, Hamilton, Muhammad, etc all eager to prove themselves. We also would need a grand piano or an anvil to be dropped on Jethro Franklin's bald head at some point relatively soon because that guy can't seem to develop any talent here.

and i will come back and GLADLY eat my words, Able, if ya boy Donofrio gets these boys rollin in '13.

Jethro Franklin is the one we really should be having a conversation about.

Who has he developed that he can hang his hat on?

jethro franklin is one of the WORST coaches in america. on the other hand, he is a great teacher of the position!

No lie. Jethro concerns me. Even when Golden brought him along.

Texans and Buccaneers fans were not impressed when he was in the NFL, and USC's defenses sucked in '05 and '09.

We'll see...

schedule or because you think they'll be a legit top 30 squad?

Mostly schedule, but it depends on how much better we get up front.

I expect the back 7 to be good. Front 4 is still an unknown.

gotcha. it's definitely possibe, in 08' uf went from having one of the worst pass defenses in the country to having a top 5 unit. but what gave me hope then is that we racked up sacks, got tons of tfl's, etc. i really like mccord, bush, and howard. you guys seem a bit soft up the middle though. who do you have there that you realistically expect to make a jump?

how did the defense improve giving up 41 to one of the worst oefenses in the country in uva and 500+ to duke? you're a ******. from where they started any little positive would be 'improvement,' that doesn't mean any real improvement took place. i guess duke and uva were trotting out all-stars on offense. yawn.

We were a little bit better at the end of the year, but inconsistent. Injuries and inexperience still cropped up.

For example, in the Duke game, we gave up a 99-yard TD pass because a true freshman SS who hadn't played a lot blew a coverage. He got caught looking in the backfield and let a WR run right past him.

makes sense. like i said i wasn't trying to throw any shots or anything because i frankly haven't watched you guys as in-depth as most on here have. just saying i would be concerned the defense was seemingly not improved to end the year by giving up tons of yards and points to bad teams. even taking away that 99 yard pass they gave up 484 to duke in the last game of the year. that shouldn't be happening at miami.

We shouldn't be giving up big numbers to Duke, and it's indicative of how depleted we were in terms of talent and experience.

i would agree with the talent angle against teams like fsu, ksu, nd, and even to some extent unc, but duke, bcc, and uva? those guys were getting handled by teams with worse talent than miami. uva in particular barely scored against fcs teams, that can't all be talent. duke may have 2 players drafted at the max, miami's defensive unit will at least twice that much. i know you guys have some young talent that was inexperienced but by the end of the year they should have gained enough to play well. like i said, i don't know all the intricacies of your squad to break it down, but it would definitely be concerning. that can't all be a talent issue.

It's not always "talent". This idea of looking at talent in a vacuum is what makes fans looks like dopes. Clearly, guys like McCord, Kirby, Howard, Bush, Jenkins, Pierre, etc. obviously have talent. Ed Reed had talent too as a freshman and sophomore. But Ed Reed as a freshman wasn't the same guy that he was as a junior or senior.

Dudes get way too simplistic with the "we've got more talent" argument. Look at the DLine that was playing most of the year, and then tell me about talent. Look at the Safeties that took most of the reps and talk to me about talent or speed.

A young weak talented dude is usually going to get worked at a strength position by an older more experienced slightly less talented guy. Look at McCord and Terry getting ragdolled last year and then talk to me in a couple years when they're terrorizing QBs and giving OLinemen diarrhea.

LULZ at the "almost beat a championship team" mantra. What was the score of that game? And what happened in that GT game?

Right. But we never explored anything else. We were pretty steadfast in playing the Pro Bowl scheme. We'd throw a few poorly designed blitzes every now and then when were were desperate, but never really tried attacking and getting to the QB.

We actually blitzed a lot last year. We still couldn't get to the QB. And we often gave up big plays as a result. Pretty sure that 99 yard TD against Puke came on a blitz where a freshman was in coverage and got caught peeking in the backfield.
