Barry Jackson in depth about the defense/D'onofrio

The defense looked great at home against USF and VT late in 2012.

Looked like dog**** on the road against UVA and Duke. Weird.

His first year at Miami the defense only allowed 20.1 ppg. Do you think in one year he suddenly forgot how to coach defense or do you think the terrible results we had last year was caused by the lack of talent and experience we were playing with?

This is exactly what I said during the season. So our scoring defense drops by 10 points, and our total defense drops by nearly 130 yards.

Either D'Onofrio has early onset dementia, or we felt the loss of the following players:

Sean Spence
Micanor Regis
Adewale Ojomo
JoJo Nicholas
Marcus Robinson
Andrew Smith
Olivier Vernon
Ray Ray Armstrong

Not exactly a murderers' row, but we due to the horrible 2009 and 2010 recruiting classes, we didn't properly replace those guys.

Early in the season, we were playing with **** near Sun Belt talent on the d-line. Chickillo was the ONLY defensive end on the roster who had taken a collegiate snap at the position and he's a true sophomore.

Our defense was bound to be a train wreck last year.

Do you hear Dorito, though? He wants to keep those dudes on the field! Gaines? Shayon? FOR SERIOUS?

USF had what? the 3rd string guy that was redshirting playing QB?

and Logan thomas got paid off or something

how did the defense improve giving up 41 to one of the worst oefenses in the country in uva and 500+ to duke? you're a ******. from where they started any little positive would be 'improvement,' that doesn't mean any real improvement took place. i guess duke and uva were trotting out all-stars on offense. yawn.

We were a little bit better at the end of the year, but inconsistent. Injuries and inexperience still cropped up.

For example, in the Duke game, we gave up a 99-yard TD pass because a true freshman SS who hadn't played a lot blew a coverage. He got caught looking in the backfield and let a WR run right past him.

makes sense. like i said i wasn't trying to throw any shots or anything because i frankly haven't watched you guys as in-depth as most on here have. just saying i would be concerned the defense was seemingly not improved to end the year by giving up tons of yards and points to bad teams. even taking away that 99 yard pass they gave up 484 to duke in the last game of the year. that shouldn't be happening at miami.

We shouldn't be giving up big numbers to Duke, and it's indicative of how depleted we were in terms of talent and experience.

why does this guy get every benefit of the doubt, but other DCs here in the past got nada?

Because he had success at Temple.

Bill Young got the benefit of the doubt because of his résumé. Tim Walton didn't.

Lovett was somewhere in between.

he had success because golden usually had the better talent than the other team they faced

That's usually how football works. I expect that here.

BTW they developed that talent.

He said he wants to play fewer guys on defense. He also said he wants a pass rush, so Shayon Green will be coming off the field. Believe that.

I don't think he's going to come out and say Gaines is going to be on the bench in place of Raphael Kirby, but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened.

i would agree with the talent angle against teams like fsu, ksu, nd, and even to some extent unc, but duke, bcc, and uva? those guys were getting handled by teams with worse talent than miami. uva in particular barely scored against fcs teams, that can't all be talent. duke may have 2 players drafted at the max, miami's defensive unit will at least twice that much. i know you guys have some young talent that was inexperienced but by the end of the year they should have gained enough to play well. like i said, i don't know all the intricacies of your squad to break it down, but it would definitely be concerning. that can't all be a talent issue.

What did this ****** run at Temple? Was it the same soft zone bend but don't break garbage?

I want our defenses to be getting in that ***. Confusing QBs with different fronts. Sending pressure from everywhere. We ran the Pro Bowl defense, or an All-Star game defense. No blitzing allowed, no jamming allowed etc.

The BC game showed me all I needed to know about Dorito. He's a bum.

By November guys like Bush, Howard, Moore, McCord, Jenkins, etc had all played a bunch. Two plays stand out to me late in the season: Logan Thomas' 9,000 yard TD run and Duke's 9,500 yard TD pass where Jenkins let the guy run right by him. That kind of bull**** shouldn't be happening. And let's not even bring up the corching display at UVA. Eichorst could have fired Golden that day and it would have been perfectly justifiable.

i can't believe Able is in here justifying the 120th ranked defense....unfugginbelievable

Talent, experience, and injury. Those were the problems.

Either that, or D'Onofrio and Golden forgot how to coach defense.

When **** goes wrong, the first thing people do is blame the coach.

Who would've had last year's defense ballin'? With what scheme?
Dunno but I **** sure know that we wouldn't have been 116/120. If you want to defend that, then be my guest.

I can't tell if you're trollin' or bipolar.

Able goin HAM for Donofrio

nobody said anything about havin the defense "ballin". but **** sure better than 116.

come on man

No trollin' outside the WEZ, bruh.

I couldn't care less about D'Onofrio. I just don't think he's the problem.

We had dudes like Darius Smith, Corey King, Kacy Rodgers, and Tyrone Cornlieus playing big minutes. I mean ****.

Others are saying the scheme is too complex, and we should dumb it down.
