Barry Jackson in depth about the defense/D'onofrio

Looking forward to a 2 deep stacked up with playing experience.

Excited that the defensive rotation will be minimized. Less substitutions and more consistency.

I guarantee Nick Saban doesn't water down his defenses... and he's turned bama into a defensive machine... (no not saying D'Onof is saban).. the point is, you run your system, you recruit for it and you give it time to sink in.... top 20 d's might not be something to write home about, but a top 20 D at temple, is. Inevitably someone is going to say "look at their competition" while somehow completely disregarding that they were playing with temple "talent" ..

One thing i know is that we definitely need to get to the QB more.. less than a sack a game is unacceptable.

dorito had the best talent in his division...

Last season?

Good. Good. Now I can ignore every other thing you trot out as complete bull****. Your name had me skeptical. This post confirms it. Best talent in the division. The ****?

In fact go to CI and look up multiple threads where I essentially taught the scheme to the "No D" whiners.

Could you post your write up of scheme here?

it was not handed to him.. they recruited and developed those kids.. i have faith they can do that here too.

lol @ the living room coaches...just wait and see what our D is like this year w more experience and hopefully a healthy DL (also stronger and bigger DL after a full season and offseason on campus).

Dudes love playing the results instead of looking at the circumstances.

When he was at Temple, they had to run an extremely complex system. And it results in a top 20 scoring D. But at Temple, kids they played a ton of seniors, and kids weren't leaving early left and right.

The point Im making is his system is too complex to run unless you are fielding a heavily senior laden team. IMO they need to do LESS, not more blitzes and coverages.

You completely lose your speed and athleticism advantage when you have kids thinking too much.

The defense itself is fine, and would be cool in the NFL. It is ineffective with a bunch of college kids the majority of whom come from coaching by ****hole south Florida coaches.

Essentially you want Coach D to dumb down the playbook but yet Golden preaches high football IQ? Our fans claim Coach D doesn't know what he's doing but this scheme would be good in the NFL?

Once Coach D has a developed roster and his scheme is fully implemented CFB is focked. That is all...

Matthew Thomas was a major loss.

Not really a coach D hater.....yet. He definitely needs to produce a better defense this season though. We have a lot of young talent returning. Some of these guys will go into their third season knowing his system as well.

Defenses under Coach D:

2006 Temple (his first year there): 41.3 ppg, 452.4 ypg
2007 Temple: 26.3 ppg, 363.4 ypg
2008 Temple: 23.1 ppg, 388 ypg
2009 Temple: 21.7 ppg, 335.7 ypg
2010 Temple: 19.1 ppg, 317.7 ypg
2011 Miami: 20.1 ppg, 359.9 ypg
2012 Miami: 30.5 ppg, 486.4 ypg

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/stats/byteam?cat1=defense&cat2=Total&sort=1137&conference=I-A_all&year=2012

Judging from his history we can expect steady improvement in the scoring defense. His first year at Miami the defense only allowed 20.1 ppg. Do you think in one year he suddenly forgot how to coach defense or do you think the terrible results we had last year was caused by the lack of talent and experience we were playing with?

I feel like in all other things that Golden has done here, we've supported his decisions and philosophies? So why not trust him on Coach D?

I posted before last season that our defensive roster was lacking talent, experience and depth and I expected a very rough season. Then add in the injuries we had?

Jury is still out on Coach D IMHO. He's well respected, has done a great job in his career. I don't think it's fair to write him off with what we worked with. There wasn't a single position group that wasn't lacking.

Looking for a jump this season, but I am still very concerned with the DL.

A top 20 scoring defense is not a monster defense, and no team in the BCS era has won a title without at least a top 10 D.

Secondly, we are NFLU bc we consistently have the best athletes. And when a player is elite, he often leaves after 3 years, thus there are always going to be young guys rotating in to a complex defense that is designed to NOT have young kids playing.

It's completely counter to decades worth of proven concepts that lead to elite Hurricanes defense.

Auburn.

i've been watching miami's d closely in anticipation of our matchup in september.

i don't know much about d'onofrio other than his 2 seasons at miami, i know about golden from his uva days where he utilized the 3-4. but obviously you guys aren't using that scheme at miami. i will say this, if i were a miami fan i'd be concerned that the defense at the end of the year was just as bad as it was at the beginning of the year. 500+ yards to duke??? 41 points to uva??? and uva had one of the worst offenses in the country at that time. if it's really an experience thing then shouldn't the defense be better by the end of the year? idk, you guys would know more than me but his scheme seems hella vanilla and soft, that's always a recipe for getting carved up no matter how much experience or talent you end up acquiring.

Our defensive talent level last year was woeful, particularly at the point of attack. Pair that with inexperienced players all over the field, and it was a recipe for disaster. I don't know how people can look at what we trotted out there last year, and not expect dismal results.

What division are your referring to? W/ the injuries and youth, our defensive talent level was borderline Div 1AA.

just because you're in the shltter and not in the living room porsting this doesn't mean you're more qualified than anyone else

People forget that when Miami was good, kids like Irvin, Sean Taylor, Winslow Jr, and a lot more sat the bench or saw very little playing time as freshmen. There are excuses for a defense and there are reasons, and there's a difference. Just getting a year older and stronger will help. DL should be at least a little better and McCord won't be playing DE at 215lbs this time.

It's pretty simple. If Curtis Porter is healthy and playing up to his capabilities then everyone around him (including Dorito) will look better.
