All-Time Miami Hurricanes Draft - D$ selects Shakespeare/JL

There is one last non-QB/RB stud on the board with ridiculous UM-credentials...I can't be forced to reach elsewhere just yet with this guy on the board...

Larry selects...

Love KC Jones. I considered grabbing KC/Mercier at the top of the round but didn't want to leave empty handed at tackle.

I only considered 5 Miami Hurricane QBs to be associated with leading my team, and with 2 already gone, I'm not going to push the envelope any further. This next swing of picks before my next selection might have left me with someone I didn't want.

He had a great balance of College and Pro career. While there's another passer who may be more physically talented and traditional, I just didn't want him leading my ballclub.

This guy had an incredible passer rating of 149 one season here. His average pass that year was about 9 yards per, so Andre Johnson and the rest of his weapons should be very pleased.

Ladies and gentlemen:

QB, Bernie Kosar

Plus, his daughter is an interesting Public Relations piece to my team:

Larry was wrong. There wasn't just one elite non QB HB left. I have absolutely no idea how this next pick slipped. I have been sweating it for 3 rounds now. Necessity for a DB kept my from taking him last round, and when Holmes went, I got really scared, but it's all worked out for the best.

If you would have told anyone that a UM Hall of Famer, a consensus All American, and a first round pick and NFL All-Rookie would have been left on the board in this late of a round, you would have been laughed out of the building. This man was a 3 year starter at UM, and a finalist for the Lombardi Award his senior season. Jimmy Johnson called this guy "the most consistent lineman he ever coached". He helped anchor one of the best defenses in UM history, and he did so alongside his new teammate, Jerome Brown. With that kind of chemistry, I simply can't resist making my next pick.

Tano selects...BILL HAWKINS, DEFENSIVE END

I think he slipped because he never put up any crazy numbers and was more of a "steady" guy. I think Jimmy Johnson called him "a guy that won with consistency" or something like that. I thought about him last round and the round before, but that always stuck out in my mind.

Good pick either way. Solid value.

Thanks, yeah, I think he never had more than 7.5 sacks in a season, but a Lombardi finalist nonetheless and considered good enough to be a first round pick. injuries derailed his NFL career, but he's nonetheless one of the most decorated linemen in UM history.

Plus the guy played with my first round pick, and played well. That kind of thing can't be overlooked either. He'll fit right in.

Yep and to be honest, since I've got two 1gappers inside and a 230 LB MLB, I need some solidly built DE's. I'm really happy with that pick.

/Don't mean to toot my own horn.
//Yeah, yeah I do.

He sure didn't slip in the NFL draft or UMHOF voting!

He put up great numbers at the Combine and was universally considered a "heady, high motor" guy. He was rewarded for those qualities/attributes. But, because he never produced eye-popping stats to match on any level, I think he slipped in this draft. He was the among the 4 guys I considered when it came time to pick a DE (in my last round). I didn't go with him because others of similar athleticism and frames produced more and were also 1st rounders. I'm just giving my perception of him.

Once again, **** **** ****.

Well, your perception isn't in line with the NFL, Jimmy Johnson, the UM HOF, and the Lombardi voting committee! I guess what I'm getting at, is I'm a fan. He was a great Hurricane and a great value pick in this draft, IMHO.

RE: Hawkins...he was a good player...I think there are several players left on the board that are more of value, but I think there are a few guys that went ahead of him that don't have the value.

Overall, I think he went right around where he was supposed to go.

Okay guys, thanks for your patience, got stuck in a meeting then had to catch a flight.

With his next pick, Sands selects OG/OT Mark Cooper. Cooper is a member of the Miami All-TIme Team selected by the Miami Herald, and was the 31st pick in the 1983 NFL draft. As a senior he was honorable mention All-America and the UM OL MVP, and was UM player of the game a few times, including against Notre Dame. He had a very solid 7 year NFL career, protecting the likes of Jim Kelly and John Elway, and started in Superbowl XXI. (But for Jim Burt, Cooper might have a SB ring, to be honest.)

Cooper was tough and strong and is a legit OG and OT, having played OT at UM and both in the pros.

Alright, I gotta get a D-end and with my pick, Im going with a guy who was a physical specimen and was good enough to leave UM as a first round pick and had his share of sacks( in the top ten all-time at UM, IIRC) and that Kenard Lang.

It was between he and Rusty Medearis, but I just like the physical tangibles of Lang better, although Rusty may have had the best motor I've ever seen at UM.

Two rounds ago, I picked my cornerback tandem. Last round, I grabbed my bookend tackles. Now I'll go ahead and get my dream backfield.

First, I'll take the man who ran for close to 10,000 yards in only 113 NFL games. A national champion at the U with a career 5.7 ypc. Southeast Jerome himself, Clinton Portis:

In my opinion, Portis is the best overall football player of any of the great 'Canes backs. As an inside runner, he had tremendous vision, balance and feet. In the open field, he was a sub 4.4 guy that was a threat to score every time. He could have easily been a safety, and nobody was better at blitz pickup at Miami or the pros. From his freshman season to his NFL career, Portis has always been a special, game-changing back.
