All in on Mateer (Boomed and Sooned)

I still think some people are going to be surprised with what Ward does in the NFL.

He routinely ignored easy yards for the big play and his deep ball is far from elite. He'll have to fundamentally change his philosophy to succeed at the next level in my opinion.

I'm not saying Emory, Mendoza or Mateer is the guy, I just don't think Ward is a generational QB that carried us to 10 wins. Very, very good player (and should have won the Heisman), but most of the pieces are in place on O for the next guy to step in and not fall flat on his face.
we lose our entire receiving corps and our best tight end.

we return a good OL though.

i like our RB room esp lyle but who knows who stays healthy. we got lucky last year for once with RB injuries.

Definitely more than a .5 WAR over Emory.

I’d put it at 1.5 - 2 WAR

6-6 likely to 8-4 ceiling with Emory. Might be worse than that because I think it would kill our portal pursuit as well. Might be able to sell something with Mendoza
This is where I’m at. Mateer and if no the grab Mendoza. That can be sold very positively to recruits and the fans.

We are about to lose all of our WR production and we “only” have to replace our entire secondary + add a DT and LB if we want to make our defense just respectable. Ward was worth at least 3 games this year himself. We lose him + everything t above = a .500 season. Mario can recruit individual players but his roster building is showing itself 4 years in
our year was the same as mannys 9 win 2020 season (that had a tougher schedule since it mostly ACC teams). QB carried the roster and covered up holes until it couldnt.

Wow, 3 million for Mateer. Yeh, better try to shore up the defense. F***, what am I talking about. Oh well. I feel bad for some of you who never got to go to a NC game with the Canes. I am 50 and got to watch all of them either in person or on TV. It was very nice.

No moping here. I am just glad to have been on a great ride. We have the Dan Campbell of college football. If Cario Mistobal can keep us in the 7 - 8 win season from here on out, I am good.

Numbers are higher now because of revenue sharing.

Yeah tough to say now with so much up in the air but if we only got 10 with Cam it’s hard to just put blind faith that we get this all figured out with a tougher schedule
Bingo. We are not just a QB away in 2025. We were in 2024. We got the best one that gave us the greatest QB season in our history and all Mario and Co have to show for it are some press conferences sound bites and toaster pastries

We don’t have any proven receivers. Only highly rated kids that hopefully pan out at the moment.

O-line is solid. Backfield is solid. TE is average.

Despite Ward leaving plays on the field we all wish he took (that one that still bothers me the most is the Georgia Tech game when he ignored an wide open by 15 yards Arroyo for what should’ve been his 2nd TD of the game), he absolutely won us at least 4 games on his talent alone (UiF, VT, Cal, Louisville) and the Duke game is a toss up.

I know this is obvious, but if we get him on campus. I think its over for OU

i dont see the defense instantly turning over into elite or even a true top 10-15 with the current holes. we have been getting shunned by the top guys entering the portal so far. maybe the kentucky DT signs wiht us but never a good sign when we cant get a commitment on the spot while other spots are doing so.

Here’s the scoring defense ranks for the playoff teams.

Oregon - #13
Georgia - #23
Boise State - #37
Arizona State - #30
Texas - #2
Penn State - #8
Notre Dame - #3
Ohio State - #1
Tennessee - #4
Indiana - #6
SMU - #28
Clemson - #35

Average scoring defense of 16th. Miami was 60th.

We return an excellent OLine and RB room. We have a deep TE room. If Horton leaves that's a problem, but everyone was high on Carr and Trader when they were recruited - now is their time to step up. We also obviously have the Portal to add pieces too.

I don’t think people realize how “easy” this was for Mario this year with the easy schedule and players he had and he blew it, mostly because he didn’t fix the defense in the off season.

I will be shocked if we are even in it for the ACC, let alone a playoff spot this upcoming year with whomever the QB is and whatever patches on defense materialize.

IMO, we are primed for 8-9 wins at most. 7-5 more likely.

Cam told him to go visit OU and bump up the Miami offer. Than shock everyone and pick Miami. Just an educated guess!

Yeah no reason to recap what we already know and I’m not gonna panic until the dust settles

But this was always the elephant in the room while we were winning games this year. It’s why I just tried to appreciate it and not ***** about it

- him reportedly on campus today
- Sooner reporters telling everyone it’s looking good
- Process won’t drag out

I just am more surprised if we are actually in it that he wouldn’t come here first for a day then give OU the last shot.

I’m glad (hopeful) to hear it won’t drag out. Either way, we pull the rug and steal him this week and skill position players in the portal hop on board or we can pivot quickly. Always grateful for Ward but man if he made the decision earlier we wouldn’t landed more players and recruits.

If Mario misses out on this WSU QB and gives us FSU type season, we'll found out who the bosses are soon enough
doubt it. ive said this when he got hired. nothing against him and he was successful at Oregon, but for a school w the lack of funds so to speak in terms of say LSU, Bama, UGA, ATM - we should have never given a lifetime deal we couldn't get out of. should have been 5 years on whatever number he want and then go from there. if he says no, you move on and actually interview guys (something we haven't done since golden)
