All in on Mateer (Boomed and Sooned)

The early schools to watch in this process are Oklahoma and Miami. The Sooners have a lot of things going for them: Location (Mateer grew up two hours away) and coaching staff (both Mateer's OC and QB coach from this season). Miami is selling what it just did for another former Washington State QB -- Cam Ward -- and the roster that would be around him. Other schools will look to get involved, but it's fair to say the Sooners are the early frontrunners. Don't expect this process to drag out, per sources.

If Mario pull this off…..man

Guys, Mendoza has a million dollar offer on the table. Given all of our areas of need, assuming that would be 15-20% of budget. Do you want to pay that? I like Mendoza, I think he could be an nfl player at some point. But his wins above replacement is maybe .5 a game.

We really have a choice, go all in on defensive talent, overpay. Overpay for 1 wr and have a qb competition in the fall between Emory and Nickel. Or we wait on Ewers, who I think is super average. And maybe we get him, maybe we don’t…

we are about to be the **** around, find out crew on QB recruiting. There aren’t enough good players in the portal on defense to transform that unit to the point where we can “run the ball and play defense.” Emory will not help us attract that level of player anyway. This is why you can’t build a room around development arms and just go big game QB hunting. It worked this year but as we’ve seen with FSU, all it takes is one tough portal cycle. Start Nickel. This is shaping up to be a brutal roster in year 4

Who's got it?

Washington State QB John Mateer
All signs point to Washington State quarterback John Mateer landing at Oklahoma, and that starts with sources telling On3 that he is expected to be in Norman on Tuesday. With his former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach now with the Sooners, it appears to be a strong fit. But Miami is giving a lot for Mateer to think about. The Hurricanes are selling him on the same development his former Washington State teammate Cam Ward got this season. Miami won’t back down if it comes down to a dollar amount.

This year Lane did less with more than we did. Had a playoff birth set and blew it against UF who we beat. We had a top offense in 2023 with a QB seeing ghosts and the number 1 offense this year. How many years does it take when we live in a recency bias world. Only at Miami.
Maybe we’re just not as attractive as you think.

People keep bemoaning the fact we continually have to prove it or some other thing from recruits/prospects. What does that tell you?

Definitely more than a .5 WAR over Emory.

I’d put it at 1.5 - 2 WAR

6-6 likely to 8-4 ceiling with Emory. Might be worse than that because I think it would kill our portal pursuit as well. Might be able to sell something with Mendoza
If no Mateer or someone else decent with experience, you absolutely take Mendoza for 2 years into a Nickel or Coleman bridge. Sorry, Emory! 5-7 to 8-4 is not good enough.

Mendoza this year should get you a guaranteed 8 win minimum.

IMO, Mario can’t go from 10 or 11 wins this year down to 5, 6 or 7.

Assuming we have $3mil to spend and there's not extra funds coming specifically to get Mateer.

Would you rather:

Option A:
Mendoza ($1mil), WR1 ($750k), starting DT ($750k) and a starting safety or CB ($500k).

Option B:
Mateer

I have no idea if these numbers are right but it seems like we could get Mendoza plus at LEAST 2 guaranteed starters for the cost of just Mateer.

I don't think Mateer is worth 2 or 3 more wins than Mendoza. Especially if Mendoza comes WITH additional guaranteed starting talent. I think he's a known QB starter and can put up 300 yards a game with better supporting cast (he put up 3000 yards or 275/game this year) and 70% completion. He's smart and tough and passionate. He's probably not too different from Emory except he's a multi year started and Emory isn't so people know what they're getting with Mendoza and that will probably attract at least 1 or 2 more receivers than having just Emory.
That possibly can’t be the plan. If it is, fold it up and burn the program.

Can’t go all in on Mateer and not do anything about the defense.

If it’s one or the other as the only choices, you gotta get a defense and then hope for the best on offense after bringing in a few guys.

Either way, I am out on those plans!

I'm not saying those are the plans but $3mil is $3mil. There's a budget and it's not unlimited..prices keep going up and I doubt our fund is growing at the same rate the players prices are.

If your choices are $3mil on a QB and the other QB costs $1mil then by getting the $1mil QB you have another $2mil to spend on the rest of the roster.

Agree. We can win 10+ with EW and an elite secondary

We need to fire the dc and db
I try to step back and look at QB's like Mendoza and go "Ok this is what he did at Cal...If we truly believe our OL and skill players are that much better who knows what his ceiling is then."

If someone already has a million out for him clearly others see it the same way. 6'5 good arm, decent athlete, extremely bright from what I gather, and has played a lot of college snaps.

Is he Cam...most likely not. But on top of all that he seems like a great kid who didnt take one shot at us when we played. Could do worse having that kid in your qb room for one year with Nickel. And if he plays smart, we utilize the run a bit more we can likely be just as good.
i like the Cali qb he’s not scared to run it . Probably a true rpo qb who seems to love Miami . You can’t get a cam every year but this qb is good imo better than anything wr have now especially with our RBs , ol and wr . Yeah are sophomore wr I have high expectations. Trader > Brown

If he leaves, its over. And OU knows it. They will do everything they can to make sure he doesnt get on a plane to Miami. Because they know they wont ever see him again if he does. The question is does Mateer listen to his agent? (Who you know is urging him to weigh all his options and hear us out and not just go with the first offer as any good agent would do) or does he cave into the peer pressure of playing for his ex coaches who you know will be begging and graveling for him to shut it down immediately and join them? Will be interesting to see.
Its been said in other posts he doesn’t have an agent 🤷🏻‍♂️
