All in on Mateer (Boomed and Sooned)

Guys, Mendoza has a million dollar offer on the table. Given all of our areas of need, assuming that would be 15-20% of budget. Do you want to pay that? I like Mendoza, I think he could be an nfl player at some point. But his wins above replacement is maybe .5 a game.

We really have a choice, go all in on defensive talent, overpay. Overpay for 1 wr and have a qb competition in the fall between Emory and Nickel. Or we wait on Ewers, who I think is super average. And maybe we get him, maybe we don’t…
Ok fair, I just don’t think that top portal talent could be lure only with money. Especially for WRs in their “put up or shut up” year.

And the defensive talent in the portal is shrinking as we are speaking…

*it's not my money* but I would hate to see us spending a ton on Ewers

Notice how both of your answers had nothing to do with the performance of Emory. So my point is proven. It's a terrible excuse. If Mateer doesn't work out, we throw money at kids and still build a good roster
You were complaining that kids are scared to join us, but not other schools that have the same QB issue. Again, those schools have proven winning track records and we do not…. And Mario had the stigma still of being an offense killer, rightfully or wrongfully, so he has an uphill battle and add in the fact recruits are scared 2024 was a blip, like 2023 FSU.

This is my point. I don’t think he raises the floor more than .5 games. I’ll say it again we ****ed up ROYALLY not grabbing Miller Moss.

Absolutely I would,if that’s the market then lets go. Waiting on a qb means we probably miss on wrs, and defensive talent. Mendoza is solid..Are we trying to win or not? Up the budget if needed wtf go get a proven guy and surround him with talent and build the defense..Unless the plan isn’t to win every year

Especially if we don’t get mateer. Ewers is garbage, emory is garbage,if we have a qb competition between emory and nickel i might not watch a game (im lying)

Landing 5 star High School qb's means nothing if they portal out in a year or two which many do. What's the benefit of spending huge money to land a kid that will only portal out anyway.
I was just comparing Mario’s QB recruiting vs Riley’s. I’d rather be bringing in 5 star guys than 3 star guys, but that’s just me.

I try to step back and look at QB's like Mendoza and go "Ok this is what he did at Cal...If we truly believe our OL and skill players are that much better who knows what his ceiling is then."

If someone already has a million out for him clearly others see it the same way. 6'5 good arm, decent athlete, extremely bright from what I gather, and has played a lot of college snaps.

Is he Cam...most likely not. But on top of all that he seems like a great kid who didnt take one shot at us when we played. Could do worse having that kid in your qb room for one year with Nickel. And if he plays smart, we utilize the run a bit more we can likely be just as good.

Definitely more than a .5 WAR over Emory.

I’d put it at 1.5 - 2 WAR

6-6 likely to 8-4 ceiling with Emory. Might be worse than that because I think it would kill our portal pursuit as well. Might be able to sell something with Mendoza

And Allar is being hyped up as a heisman candidate next season. Put Mendoza in the lab with SD and sign a couple of impact portal WRs and the kid would be cooking next season in my opinion. And the fact that he could be here for 2 years (at least as I understand it) is another positive.
Im not a huge Drew Aller fan but if Mendoza is anything like him we win 10+ games easily next year. I admit I didnt follow Mendoza much but I did follow Aller and while I think he is overhyped..he is a **** good college QB and has Penn State in the thick of things every year hes been there.

Assuming we have $3mil to spend and there's not extra funds coming specifically to get Mateer.

Would you rather:

Option A:
Mendoza ($1mil), WR1 ($750k), starting DT ($750k) and a starting safety or CB ($500k).

Option B:
Mateer

I have no idea if these numbers are right but it seems like we could get Mendoza plus at LEAST 2 guaranteed starters for the cost of just Mateer.

I don't think Mateer is worth 2 or 3 more wins than Mendoza. Especially if Mendoza comes WITH additional guaranteed starting talent. I think he's a known QB starter and can put up 300 yards a game with better supporting cast (he put up 3000 yards or 275/game this year) and 70% completion. He's smart and tough and passionate. He's probably not too different from Emory except he's a multi year started and Emory isn't so people know what they're getting with Mendoza and that will probably attract at least 1 or 2 more receivers than having just Emory.

Because those teams have a track record of being successful or in Ole miss’s case in that list, Kiffin has the track record of being an offensive Guru. Meanwhile we just wasted the best QB in the country because we couldn’t stop the local JV team on defense and what has Mario proven as a coach?
Kiffin didn’t waste any talent this year?!?! Interesting

Who's OSu's QB next season? A freshman who hasn't played a snap yet. Who's Georgia and Ole Miss's qb next season? How are those backs any better than Emory. OSU and Georgias offense really looked great this year haha. Mario and Dawson proved themselves....
