All in on Mateer (Boomed and Sooned)

I know we’re assuming Brown and Martinez leave. I’m not convinced that would be the best move for either but we’ll see.

But as mentioned in my other comment, Isaiah Horton by himself makes up roughly 75% of Oklahoma’s returning production. And the offensive line discrepancy Is basically as large as possible.
I only ask because you seem to offer reasoned responses. Horton is a good #2 WR to have. If we can get a no brainer #1 I think we would have a stronger argument. Noise has died down about Cooper entering the draft, but we could be replacing as many as 4 OL for next year. I believe Mario is vastly more likely to rebuild an OL in 1 year than Venables. That being said I don't think it's as easy as Mateer saying Miami OL is better present day.

Jesus. Posted those from my phone, didn't realize they were so huge.

Anyway. Just as a direct side by side on returning receiving production:

The highlighted are either in the portal or out of eligibility. I can’t imagine walking into this in a year you’re trying to up your draft stock when the offensive line also sucks.

Let's be more direct, since Oklahoma is bleeding WIDE RECEIVERS.

WR Deion Burks 245 yards
WR Jacob Jordan 207 yards
WR Zion Kearney 62 yards
WR Zion Ragins 48 yards
WR Ivan Carreon 17 yards
TE Kaden Helms 9 yards

So ALL of the returning non-running-back receivers total 588 yards.

Isaiah Horton had 616 yards.

We can debate how much Oklahoma uses running backs in the passing game and whether Damien will be back at Miami next year.

But for now, this is apples-to-apples. We have one returning WR who has outgained ALL of Oklahoma's returning WRs and TEs.

Agree, but I also may be a little higher on Horton than some. I honestly thought he was underutilized this year, I could easily see him pushing for 1k next year.

Cooper seems all but guaranteed to return, which would give us 3 full time returning starters and 1 guy that started about half the year and played significant snaps in the other games. If we get a Rivers and/or a Daniels, to go along with that offensive line and the returning running game production it's a pretty easy call, imo.

The only other slight concern I would have, on paper it seems like a great thing that Cam and Mateer are close and both started at Wazzu, and Mateer could see what Cam was able to do here from a production/branding/winning standpoint.

The flip side to that is would he want to permanently be tied to Cam, would he want to be the guy that follows the guy and deal with the pressure of expectations that comes with that.

I hope Mateer is getting good advice, because going to OU is failure waiting to happen. They’re barren, and their targets for the portal are not on the same level as what we’re going after

Wait. Did the OU 247 say they are expecting a “big visitor” in a receiver who had 6 rec 94 yards all year And referenced 1 of his 2 TDs vs western Kentucky?

Them boys cooked

Neither program is really in a position to pitch stability and long term success so hopefully it comes down to faith that the right pieces will follow

Its definitely an advantage for us that Cam can literally show him the blueprint and can speak to Miamis process or foundation or whatever the **** we want to call it

Both programs are a roll of the dice but we are a few points away from an undefeated season (yes I know it works both ways). I don’t know much about Mateer so I can’t say too much but we would probably be the safer bet and I’m sure our NIL won’t be beat

I think the writing is on the wall and Mateer is definitely trending Miami with each passing day.
I think it would help solidify the decision if we were able to show him the entire WR corps coming in (i.e. signing a couple TOP guys asap).
Which it sounds like we are doing.

That Horton drop vs Syracuse has shaken my belief in him. He never could separate himself from Brown either as a clear 3rd option. At the end of the day past production is rarely ever cut and dry. We had Cam Ward throwing passes with #1 offense in college. They had their top 8 WRs hurt at one point with a **** offense. It will come down to $$ and who can sell their vision for 2025 better, imo.

That drop was rough. I thought it was pretty obvious he should've gotten significantly more snaps than Brown and we could've leaned a little more on running quick slants with him because he consistently got good inside position on defenders, but the fact that he didn't seem to separate in the coaching staff's minds obviously speaks to what you're saying.

We’ve prioritized OL and WRs so far clearly a message to Mateer

Mario basically saying **** the defense lets just score points is not something I ever imagined here

Can we please stop with this bull****?

Guys having great careers and GRADUATING are not the same thing as losing almost your entire WR corps to the Portal.

First, it is an indication that you are putting WRs in a position to stay and develop and succeed. Second, it is an indication that the players in the program do not hate their situations enough to leave.

Trader and Carr and others are next in line. They know the system. It's not the same as bringing in an entire new WR corps and then hoping they will all blend in.
Your really commenting this to the wrong person.
I'm not saying we are in a bag situation at wr and have been defending that for weeks now lol.
But it is a fact we lose 4 top QB targets this off-season. That can absolutely be viewed negatively for not.

Again, I understand what you are saying. But graduations happen everywhere.

And if if your primary choices are (A) a school that is graduating a few WRs, and none are portaling out, or (B) a school where almost every WR is portaling out, you have to go with A.

Now, if there was a school C where ALL of the WRs were coming back, it might be different.

I agree

If he's a competitor, which I assume he is...he will absolutely come to UM. And he'll say "watch this" or "hold my beer" when he walks in the building.
