All in on Mateer (Boomed and Sooned)

I wonder if Mario’s approach is spending a bag to add a qb like like , and making small additions to the defensive room. Maybe he feels with better coaching we can get that unit to be average, and we can still win 10+ games
He really needs to do both ... land an alpha QB and a solid defensive roster & staff (with a new DC) ... just to be ABLE to win 10 games.

I’ve always thought Miami had a better chance than most. Even if it’s 50 -50. I never got those saying “why even bother , it’s a waste of time”. Imo that’s a losers mentality. Why wouldn’t you wait for the best qb at the most important position in football?

I mean all we’ve talked about for two years was Mario needed a qb to change the narrative being sold against him and Cam did that. Also this isn’t some random qb , this is Cam’s backup he has a relationship with from a previous school. The backup who watched Cam rise to national fame playing here. Racking up huge numbers , getting a Heisman invite and shooting up draft boards. Oh and did I mention big NIL money ?

Imo there’s more here to be sold than the mess at OU. This is his money year and it’s all business , it would be foolish to not at least entertain what he could do here. I’m not sure people realize the money potential at Miami if you’re a high level athlete.
don't take this the wrong way ... no homo ... but a good looking white qb at miami would rack up NIL wise ... i mean, cam ward had an armani deal ... this is the financial side that miami offers in terms of global appeal ...

While I'm optimistic about going H2H with Oklahoma for a QB with all of the facts on the table, if he's making a decision with his brain.

Can't discount the fact that Oklahoma is going to be wounded animal mode desperate. I would probably say Venables' job beyond 2025 entirely hinges on landing Mateer. The next best option in the portal goes 6-6 at best even if they clean up at WR and OL in the portal. Even with Mateer, they only bring back Deion Burks at WR and they're losing a few starting OL to the portal (off an already bad OL - I'm not even sure who will be protecting their QB)

While we probably offer a good NIL package, I would not put it past them to basically issue a blank check or say we'll top anything Miami puts in writing by $500k. They're that desperate. Desperation leads to crazy decisions. You don't want to be H2H with desperate teams in the NIL world.

Wazzu bowl game is the 27th. Last day of portal window is the 28th so I’m expecting him to enter then.
Yep and our Bowl is the 28th

Meaning.. in theory, if we still don't have our QB on the 28th, Emory won't be in the winter portal, so he'll be here in the spring. If he's here in the spring and would have to enroll somewhere else in the summer, he should just go ahead and stick around as the backup and get the keys as a RS Jr or compete with Nickel/Judd/Coleman for the starting job. Hard to win a job, at a decent program, if you enroll in the summer. Even if you do win it, you're limited and not doing yourself any favors.

Win/Win.

man... didnt Lincoln Riley leave OU in 2021? If 3 years ago you told me in 2024 Mario will be our HC and we will have a better offense than OU and would be seen as a better porta destination for a QB I would have bet the house otherwise, yet. here we are.

D$ said Mendoza will get a million from a team who needs a qb badly. I believe it. But if we can get mateer for 1.5? Please go that route

Keep in mind Cam didn't commit to Miami until January 13th 2024... that's a month from now. Obviously Mateer's situation is different in two ways 1) he's eligible to play in a bowl game (12/27/24) 2) he's not going into the NFL draft.

I'm hopeful we get an answer sooner rather than later but this could be a bit.

Truly crazy. Mario running an air raid with a qb who won the davey obrien. Highest scoring offense in the nation.

No believe it's not restricted to playoff. It's just 5 days after the "season has ended" if ended after the 28th.
Only if the game is played beyond December 28 though which is only playoffs or am I wrong? I don't follow bowls anymore lol

So if they play on the 27th or the 28th, the portal still closes the 28th.

I think that pitch works better on HS kids.

But a guy looking to make even more money from the NFL...is $500K worth playing behind a terrible OL with no targets and tanking your draft stock?

I think Cam just made himself MUCH more than an extra 500K when you compare his draft projection from last year to this year.

Valid but it all comes down to a brain decision or a heart (closer to home, former OC, maybe and Oklahoma can growing up) decision

agreed. if we get mateer, emory is for sure gone and he wont win out over him.

if its anyone else, i think emory sticks to battle it out.

judd can get the **** out of here.

The one main advantage OU has is the coach and the familiarity with the offense. Ward can try to mitigate that advantage by showing him how similar it is to his offense, how quickly he was not only able to learn it, but make it his own, and how much the rest of the offensive personnel here, epecially the OL, helped take that offense from middle of the league to #1 in the nation.
If they sell it correctly, I dont think its even trying to mitigate an OU scheme advantage. I think we HAVE the advantage. Our offense would get him more NFL ready while still incorporating Air Raid concepts he is familiar with. Its the perfect stepping stone to the league. 21 sets, some under center, potential for lots of audibles... That along with a great OL and solid skill position players to highlight his game is an ideal situation. Just like it was for Ward
