Welcome to the Canes, Derrick Smith

This can't be a good sign :(

Do you expect every single play on the roster to be a big time recruit? Be realistic please. We need to fix our depth issue and this is a step to fix this. I do NOT think this impacts on signing collier, dean etc. Be realistic family. He could help us on special team or come off the bench as a back up safety.

Well that's the thing. The class has 21 commits right now and five are consensus blue chips. Of course 3-star players are quality prospects, but this new staff has not gotten a bump in recruiting. 2016 was actually very good I'm not sure how the last staff did it.

**** it, wasn't this the kid who wasn't supposed to get an offer? So does this mean Edwards ain't gonna come back into the fold?

Hoping that it's just an SEC coach doing SEC things. Get the kid in because we have the slots available and just process em if it don't work out.

Don't see how the two are related

I feel like he commited without a commitable offer

Seems commitable as the coaches are tweeting about it. Saw Hartley tweeting....could this kid grow into a WR/TE hybrid? Anyone know what his current size is?
6'1 196

I think he's like 6'3 210 already

Ya and I got negged for saying he should be a LB. It wasn't a knock on him.. I legit think he looks like a LB and I'm always for moving guys down as it makes your team faster when you got safeties playing LB

You will know how well this staff is capable of hitting on their evaluations with this one, I'll tell you that much.

Reminds me a little bit of the Carlos Armour commitment. Measurable DB with a physical tape shows up one day out of the blue. I hope this works out better.

He does remind me of the typical Bud Foster/VT recruit though-- versatile player, potential at a few different spots, looks/sounds coachable.

VT offered

Just rationalizing an uninspiring pickup. This kid was a topic of discussion months ago and it appeared he wasn't a take, so taking him now, strongly suggests we aren't where we want to be.

This might be a play for edwards. They told smith they are done at safety now. They were recruiting edwards as a s/cb but may just tell him now that they want him strictly at cb.

Sure. If Jacksonville is in south Florida

Never heard of the kid. That's kind of the point.

Hey we miss on Jerry Jeudy and all the star kids but at least we got this plan D guy, whoever he is.

You're trolling that's really the point.

No I just don't think the kid is good enough to get a Miami offer.

Could I be any more clear?

Yeah. In your original post on the subject as opposed to the "he's a three star we back" BS. Meanwhile you're talking about Norton being a 4-star when he certainly wasn't evaluated at DT that high.

Maybe you struggle with sarcasm. What I'm saying is that I don't believe we'll be "back" anywhere closer to where we want to be until we start landing more highly regarded recruits.

Make more sense?

He will be a drop down SS. I wonder how many of you actually understand football.

Outside of DL the defensive recruiting is odd. Three strong safeties and two OLB's with very limited film, if at all, about Jennings or Wilder in coverage. Steed comitted to the last staff and is an all-around LB. I get the identity Manny Diaz is going for, but there isn't a lot of versatility there.

Another South Florida 3-star.

We back.

I'm sorry, I didn't know you were expecting our whole class to be 5 stars and elite talent after 1 year after underperforming for the last 10+. Please submit an application to be a recruiting analysts for Miami because you seem to be on top of your game and know everything!

Golden had a better class at the time of his firing than this. Just the truth.

I know we're paying Richt 4 million a year to do something, right?

I'd like to see around half of our class every cycle be 4/5 star kids. That's how championship teams recruit.

Tell me something...if we paid Golden 2 million per year and we're paying Richt twice as much, what kind of upgrade should we expect on the recruiting?

You tell me what's a fair expectation.

Wow, it's super awesome that you started an account just in time to bring us this thoughtful insight! I totally agree! Richt should be 2x as good as al in all ways! Now that I think about it, lets just give Richt a raise to $11 million and we'll win all the championships.

I agree most coaches see a big boost in their first full cycle we haven't seen that its the same old we had blue chippers committed or looking at us just to go else where

How do you figure?

Pete said we cooled on him.

May mean staff isn't feeling too confident about Edwards. I also like Collier a lot and now he may not get an offer.

This commitment just feels weird

Maybe this means Edwards comes in at CB. Which is exactly what he wanted.

And the staff adds numbers to the Safety position thru a kid with some + athleticism.

Win/Win.

I think Diaz likes Weakside Linebacker/Strong Safety Hybrid players (think Jabril Peppers) that can be asked to blitz, run support, or drop into coverage. This allows him to leave these guy in coverage or bring pressure without any predictability. Thus there are three SS/Will and two Sams

Oh I understood. You saw 3-star and made up your mind.

Derrick Smith is a stud with verifiable track speed from a perennial powerhouse school in Jacksonville that just won a state title.

The recruiting newbies need to shut the f**k up and listen.
