Welcome to the Canes, Derrick Smith

If he's a head buster I'll take him, hope it doesn't mean that there is substance to the Gibson grades rumor someone posted on here.

i think this is more evidence Deejay will be on offense.

I think he will learn both sides in the spring and see what sticks. Still like him at CB/FS though. Still hoping we close with Collier/Dean at CB

Nice size. VT supposedly offered.

He attended Paradise camp - any notes on how he did?

Jesus, did anyone watch that tape? He seems to have great range, athleticism, and tackling, while being huge for a safety (linebacker size). Seems like a solid SS. Rankings aren't everything.

Norton was a 3 star OG according to his ranking

Norton was a 4 star. Try again

Kendrick Norton, Trinity Christian Academy, Offensive Guard

247 Composite had him as a 3 Star Offensive Guard, the same Composite score used for Smith.

This is a receiver pickup...I have a hard time believing they like him over collier

I must say I'm really surprised

Could this be one of the guys that they were being secretive about?

Didn't want Utah finding out we were interested?

Seems that there was a grade issue that made the top teams shy away, if that's the case you don't want to call attention to the fact he can qualify and start a competition.

Pretty sure him getting qualifying scores isn't a secret between him and UM.

I like him if he grows into a LB. Looks slow for DB, and we're stocked up with slow DBs already. We need a big speed infusion back there.

why do you say he's too slow? Didn't see any reported speed anywhere outside a 9th grade 200M track time of 24 and change (which is pretty darn good for a 9th grader).

Well then that settles it. Smith will be as good at Safety as Norton is at DT.

But he wasn't a 4-star DT. Pretty much everyone but us wanted him at OG.

Also here's the 2016 NFL Draft First round pick by composite score:
2016 NFL draft: Recruiting rankings of the 1st-round picks

17 four-star recruits, five five-star recruits, four three-star recruits, four unranked recruits and one two-star recruit.

So yes the rankings can be wrong

He has less than 200 yards and less than 20 catches in his HS career. Maybe they like him there better, but his pedigree is at safety.

I say he's slow because he looks slow. On top of that, if he wasn't slow at his size at that high-profile school with his affinity for contact he'd have a better offer list.
