Welcome to the Canes, Derrick Smith

Good film. He looks like another headbussa at safety. We clearly have a type. Like Mike Singletary said, "We wanna be physical with an 'f'."

Our secondary is most definitely going to be fhysical.

Still would like to see one true ballhawk in this class.

I like what I see but he looks like a 4.7 guy. He he can get faster I think he'll be a good one. Needs to shirt. But probably won't and play special teams.

From another site----
"At the Orlando Combine 10 months ago he was measured at 6-1 and 196. I can see him now at the 205 lbs.but the coach claims 6-3?"

"Also his track and field measurable were so-so when he was at Clay High School back in April 2016 as a Junior of this year. Never ran the 100m, 200m and 400m or hurdles."
High jump- 5-2 (national elite 6-5)
Long Jump - 18-3 (usually a decent indicator of sprint speed--national elite 22-1)
Triple Jump- 37-11 (national elite 45-0)

"I hope I am in error and they know something that is not apparent to me."

"Some good offers but nothing out of this world."
Derrick Smith Recruit Interests

As I suspected, he's a very average athlete. I know a 13 year old kid who has a better long jump. He looks like a good HS football player though. It'll be interesting to see if the football skills can make up for the average athleticism. I remember Duh'Nofrio ranting about "I know he's fast, but can he play football? I want football players!"

Gilbert Fierson at Gables participated in HS track for the first time this year and made a 22-3 long jump and a 5-10 high jump.

Kid looks like he could turn out in to a Cam Chancellor type of player. Hard hitter, not blazing fast but an enforcer! Sign me up

That long jump confirms my thoughts on Smith's speed. He was a grown man when he jumped that 18 feet.

I'd move him to LB and redshirt him. Let him eat and lift and see what you can get out of him at LB. When we were at our best, we took guys like this and moved them closer to the LOS.

F***ing Kam Chancellor is name dropped...

Fierson made the national elite HS mark in the L.G.

No Antwan Collier

Jacksonville (FL) Trinity Christian S Derrick Smith found out last week he was qualified academically to graduate.

He says UM reached out to his father at that point

"That's when they said they wanted me on board," Smith said.

And Smith wanted to be on board.

Today he called Miami coaches and committed.

"I'm very excited," Smith said. "I've always wanted to be a Hurricane. It's a dream come true. Everything is really a blessing. I qualified, we won state, I found a new home, everything's been happening.

I'm a big canes fan and an alum. There's no doubt, though, that I've been frustrated with the football team's lack of progress. The program is on life support in critical condition and as a Miami guy, that's tough to watch.

We'll be talking about Jerry Jeudy, for example, for years. That one cuts deep. We can't afford this right now.

It's reasonable to be extremely disappointed in a sub-par 8-4 season that fell short of the mark in terms of more reasonable expectations like 10 wins and a possible Coastal title. I know I've expressed significant disappointment with Rick in that respect.

Being concerned about the 2016 recruiting class is also reasonable, bearing in mind there are no runner up prizes (Jeudy), but also understanding we won't know the final tally until February, and the true impact a year or more afterwards. The current class, depending on who does the analyzing, is anywhere from good to below average. Unlike a W/L record, class assessment is extremely subjective.

But here's why you're a little bītch troll, Mr. Single-digit poster: this program is NOT "on life-support in critical condition". that argument could've been made with golden still coaching here in 2015, but even then.

Typical troll post: a complete over-exaggeration of the negative.

Another typical troll go-to move: the old "I'm an alum and the biggest cane fan" refrain.

Here's a final one: every one of your posts so far has been a raggy bītchfest.

So, yes, you're a little cūnt troll.

I just feel like we already got this kid when we got Gibson. They look like the same player; box safeties that can hit but probably a liability in coverage. Why did we double up on the same player? Don't we need someone that can cover some ground? If Edwards is going to be a corner, is Amari Carter that guy? We don't have that guy in this class if not. We got dudes comparing this kid to ******* Kam Chancellor when he his best offer is Utah. Come on, man

So now we have 3 Strong Safeties in this class?

Kid looks decent on film but we have Carter and Gibson who have the same skills, and are better.

Major question marks here, IMO

Not to Mention possibly our best corner for next Malek would not be here. We are already light years from Golden strong arming kids into a yes only for them to leave as before NSD.

Ahmon Richards would be rolling Tide if Golden was still around.

We would have no chance at McFarland, Harley, Jennings, DJ Johnson, Bandy, Dee Jay Dallas and others if Golden was still around.

Kid is lighting dudes up like a ******* Christmas tree, and people complaining? But the minute he blows up deondre francois in a game, those same guys will be trying to name their kids after him. Kid is banger!! Welcome home son, welcome home

Is Derrick Smith an early enrollee?

If so, that might be why we are taking him instead of Collier.

He will count towards next years class and not the fall 25.

There is no evidence of any of this. It's all wishful thinking. Let the truth set you free. Just look at the composite rankings and compare the averages over the years.

Deejay wouldn't be here witho the Richt connection

McFarland wouldn't be here without the Thomas Brown connection

Golden never wanted to offer Bandy

And I seriously doubt he could pull DJ from outta Cali from SC, UCLA, Washington and others

So pick four of the five blue chips they have in 22 committs.

Say what you want the last staff had Shaq, Bruce, McCloud, Joe Jack, Richards, Mullins and Allison committed. Don't cherry pick. Just look at the recruiting rankings and tell me you see a difference

Sounds good but Mccloud would not be here either, if Golden stayed. Last staff got lucky with some really good kids that just love the School.
