Welcome to the Canes, Derrick Smith

This young man from Youknowwhat territory. Wonder if has seen him. I just got one question: do he have that dog in him?

How many safeties are we going to take? There are some straight dogs next year, with Gurvan Hall and Jonas, who'll be playing from Day 1.

Al Golden's first full recruiting cycle here was ranked #9 in the country, with the following blue-chippers:
Duke Johnson (#3 at his position)
Tracy Howard (#1 at his position)
Jelani Hamilton (#5 at his position)
Tyriq McCord (#9 at his position)
Deon Bush (#10 at his position)
Raphael Kirby (#7 at his position)
Ereck Flowers (#17 at his position)
Malcolm Lewis (#39 at his position, #278 overall -- lowest out of all players mentioned)

I'm also tossing out Angelo Jean-Louis, who was #14 at his position and #94 nationally. This is not to say that Golden is better than Richt. You could even argue that Richt isn't getting as big a 1st year recruiting bump because our program is not as strong as it was back then (to which I would counter that Richt isn't recruiting with the threat of looming NCAA sanctions breathing down his neck, so it'd be generous to call this a wash).

But regardless, if you feel that way, our recruiting should be at least a little concerning thus far. You can't say you trust your coaches' evaluations when those evaluations had this dude as a Plan B at best. Yes, 3-stars can be successful players. But, on average, 4- and 5-star players are better. Based on how our coaches have spent their resources, it looks like they agree.

Wish Derrick Smith the best, hope he does great. He's a Cane now. But this recruiting class has been disappointing.

Need help and depth at the position also think smith grows into a LB. Gotta have special teams players too. Cant miss on Hall or Jobe.

This is true. But I'm pretty sure McCord and Bush declared at some all american game, and tracy howard was a signing day commitment. We aren't there yet, let it play out.

If we finish with Slaton, Herbert, McFarland, Edwards, Dean, Harley, plus some more .....we should be top 7

Name some guys we have currently committed that you would throw out of the class? Just curious.

Alot of people weren't impressed with Kendrick Norton's offer list either, some wanted him at G...he was even committed to FSU well you see how that turned out...baller.... also from Trinity Christian

sounds like his issue was qualifying. also ANY comparison to jamal carter is an insult. kid has way better instincts.

You guys forget what Carter looked like in HS.

Exactly Carter looked athletic with laying the boom but .............

Carter returned punts in HS. So he was an athlete. Just lost explosiveness when he gained muscle.

never had a feel for the game. punt returns dont mean he can see diagnosis the field as a safety

We need numbers so I don't care about any slight reaches, some of them work out. Even Thurston Howell is collecting an NFL paycheck. Plus we know this staff is a lot less likely to offer reaches than the last regime.

This kid is NOT going to be a back up here

Everyone loved Jamal Carter. And they loved his highlight tapes too. He also had better offers than this dude.

Guys like to reinvent history after players come here and don't perform up to the expected level. But Jamal Carter was everyone's dude when we were recruiting him.

Golden's first class had some nice high profile commits (Bush, McCord, Howard) that were head to head wins against top programs but Richt did a much better job of locking down good talent early on in the cycle. Golden's spring evaluations netted way too many Larry Hopeless JAGs.

That said, Richt needs to close some big names over the next 7 weeks. No excuses. Find some WR's who want immediate playing time next to our freshman AA. Lock down the 2 OL, who can stay home, play for their former HC and get a shot at immediate PT. Find another DL who wants to meet at the QB. Get er done.
