WE CAN COMPETE FOR NC NEXT SEASON

We have no issues on offense except having a #1 wr and Coley could fill that. The list only had 2 off and 2 def when it should be 4 def. We are close to dead last in D, so we need to get that to Top 25 defense before we can have a shot at a ship.

You mean except running the ball for tough yards?

You guys are delusional if you think we compete for a championship next year.

I hope I eat my words, but no chance.

I do not think we are ready to compete for MNC next year either. I agree with Notorious, we really need a Collins-type back to compliment the Duke. I am not worried about our DB depth and think our WR's will be a strength as well.

If Porter and Pierre are both on the roster next year, along with a stud Juco who can contribute right away...then maybe...maybe 10 wins and a shot at the ACC championship game.

I am excited about our DB's, really excited. Our LB's should be fine, but our DL, even assuming any of the Freshman develop into contributors as sophomores, still scare me.
Duke will be Duke and Morris will mature and be a leader, receivers and TE are fine. It all comes back to the DL, mane.

We have plenty of capable receivers. Again, we all should expect going forward that under the current regime our players will actually develop and get better. I know in the past that was not the case. Coley looks like a difference maker, but he is not critical to our success as an offense next season. Our issue last season was not scoring points. On offense we need a power back to replace Mike James, one who can help Duke with getting the tough yards between the tackles. Maybe EC can play that role.

Agree about the defense and title contention.

Because this is a message board where what we do is talk football. What we say actually has no bearing on what will actually happen on the field so it's safe for us to just talk. That said, yes we should win the ACC next year, assuming Porter comes back to anchor our defense.

How about focusing on just getting better, and try to win the ACC first. Then the potential NC talk

I'm a pretty optimistic guy, especially since our conference is terrible, but nah I think we are looking at a 3 loss team next year.

No one on here has said we will win the MNC next year Canes. The most anyone said is that we should be able to compete for it. Personally, I'm saying if we don't lose key guys we take another big step toward it. Stop assuming last year's defense is next year's defense because you are assuming our players won't get better and that our coaches won't learn from their mistakes. If either of those scenarios is true then we really are in trouble. LOL

Exactly JHall. You could see where we lose to some really talented teams, but hey the possibility is also there that we win one or two of those as well with a more experienced team.

I know everyone gets all ****** about UF and we have them at home, but there's no way around the fact that they are a **** good football team right now. They probably would have throttled us this season so that's going to be a big test right there.

We've got some tough road games in conference as well and we have shown plenty of times in the past that we can stumble, as can most college teams I guess.

I do have confidence that we are going to have a chance in every game we play though, with the two in state rivalry games being the toughest ones on paper, and we all know how the paper gets tossed out when it comes to rivalry games.

With our current commits, if we land
1. RB - A Collins
2. TE B Sandland
3. DT B. Bradley
4. LB M. Thomas
We compete for NC next season.
Add #s 1 & 2 and we have most potent offense in nation. We’ll put up 45 points a game.
With #s 3 & 4, along with Bond, we finally pressure the QB and allow our outstanding DBs to function so we get off the field after 3 downs 40% - 60% more often.
NOTE: I’m not discounting D Kirkland; S. Coley; J. Grace; T. Williams; R. Robinson & Keith Bryant. They would just guarantee the repeat NC in 2014!

all depend on how morris improves and if he can be consistent

Everyone complained about our d2 personel on the dl this year. I dnt see how its goin 2 look much different nxt year. Then we need to get a LOT deeper everywhere. Were pretty much 1 injury away at every position to push the panic button. Heck, look at our lb core if Eddie Johnson isnt here nxt yr. it aint pretty.

MLB
59 Jimmy Gaines - came on strong his position to lose
56 Raphael Kirby - will ball out in 2 deep
54 JaWand Blue - will get playing time already developed physically, should have a grasp of the playbook now

OLB
52 Denzel Perryman - baller
36 Gionni Paul - starter as of now, if EJ isn't available next year, has played solid

44 Eddie Johnson ?

58 Gabriel Terry - pass rusher
34 Thurston Armbrister - JAG
31 Tyrone Cornileus - JAG

ST
47 Akil Craig
57 Nantambu-Akil Fentress

NFL
45 Ramon Buchanan

NEW RECRUITS
Devante Bond - pass rusher
Alex Figueroa - I think he will rush as well

HOPEFULS
Matt Thomas - going to play regardless
J. Grace - will RS to gain size
R. Foster - long shot but will see the field if he commits

I don't agree I think we are fine with our LB depth. I count 9 alone just for the MLB and OLB spots. 2 more making 11 if you count Bond and Fig and add 2 more with Grace and Thomas that makes 13... we good...

Until its proven that we won't struggle on the Dline next season I'm not putting us near the NC. That talk is just unrealistic imo.

We should beat florida their offense is horrible and their losing everything on D and same for florida state those should be our 2 toughest games we have a strong chance of going undefeated

Our fan base strikes again. No doubt we are on the right track, but a NC team we are not. Just setting yourself up for disappointment.

ACC Championship game has to be considered a floor next year. We made it to it this year playing what I imagine will be better competition than next year. VT and GT will be breaking in a new QB, NC looking for a RB, Duke is Duke. We need to get the Virginia monkey off our back and be putting them in their place. I just don't see any ACC team aside from FSU and Clemson that worries me with next year's team. The only games I'm concerned about (FSU, UF, and poss Clemson) play no role in determining whether we make the ACC title game.

Our defense was atrocious this year and likely won't be hugely improved with the current commits, but another year in UTough and off season learning the scheme is enough to make me think they'll improve some.

I honestly think our offense may be where you see the biggest jump. There are just too many weapons for us to fade in and out of games. Also, remember Morris didn't even have a spring last year.

For the OP and others that agree w/ him, what was your prognostication for our record going into the current season? I suspect it was equally delusional as predicting that we'd compete for a title next year.

And did you think we'd need the turnovers, special team plays, and late game heroics to beat the likes of crappy Boston College, Ga Tech, and NC State, not to mention Duke in a thriller?

Watch the NC Jan 7. Look at Alabama. Then repost how close we are.

We are DEFINITELY heading in the right direction but it's a process. Also going from mediocre to good is the easy part. Good to great is the hardest part. Alot of top programs haven't gotten over that final hurdle(i.e. Oregon, Georgia). Just cuz we been there before doesn't mean we automatically start playing for NC once we get the talent back.

Btw we didn't exactly compete (our high powered O included) vs ranked teams enough to say we ready to make that elite jump.
