UM AD Blake "I evaluate our Head Coach" Al Golden not his DC

And so rules the University of Miami Athletic Director Blake, as Miami's Defense is ranked 89th in total defense in 2013.

Yet, Warren Sapp has made his feelings about Miami defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio very clear:

"Don't talk to me about Al Golden and whatever that D-coordinator's name is," Sapp said, according to the NFL.com. "Al Golden, let me tell you what I've learned in the 19 years of being around the NFL ... you don't ever hire someone that you can't fire. That's the golden rule. The D-coordinator is killing my school. That looks like no Miami defense in the history of our school, even when [Howard] Schnellenberger was getting it started!"

Miami ranked 89th in total defense in 2013.While Sapp has no problem weighing in on the Miami staff, athletic director Blake James said on Monday that he’s fully confident in Golden and the current staff. James said it’s Golden’s job to evaluate the staff -- not his -- and he is not questioning Golden’s decision to retain D’Onofrio in spite of criticism after a season in which the defense finished No. 65 in the country in scoring defense and No. 89 in total defense.

“I evaluate our head coaches,” James said in a recent interview with ESPN.com. “I don’t think it’s the position for me to do anything other than evaluate Al. Al’s got to evaluate what’s best for him, and in our conversation he has full confidence of the staff we have in place and fully understands what we need to accomplish going forward. He had my full support, he has the full support of our president and board, and fans are always going to question things. A lot of times they don’t necessarily have all of the information and don’t consider all of the factors that go into challenges or when things aren’t going as you’d like them to go.

Miami lost four of its last six games in 2013 and allowed at least 41 points in each of those losses with the exception being a 36-9 loss to Louisville in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Some have questioned whether Golden’s friendship with D’Onofrio has impeded Golden’s perspective, but James said he still believes in his head coach’s vision for the program.

“I’m fully confident we’re going to be a lot better,” James said. “I believe in Al’s vision and I believe given the talent that we have in this area, and given the cloud of the NCAA investigation and the unknowns of it are gone now, just knowing the class we signed this year, but as importantly knowing the individuals that we were in conversation with that had interest in the University of Miami -- now maybe they all didn’t pick the University of Miami -- but I’m confident we’re going to see great young men come into this program and help us in our rebuilding process.”

“You have to look at the plan that’s in place and how that plan is being executed, and if you believe in that plan and that person that’s doing it, you’re fully committed,” James said. “That’s where I am with Al. That’s where we are as an institution with Al, and that’s where Al is with his program. There aren’t any questions here.”
like i said, our fans lack perspective.

No one lacks perspective.
Someone's perspective might differ though.
For example, while in school, we lost to UW and 3 years later to an official in title game.
We won ships in football and baseball.
From my perspective, neither program has been getting things done nor do we appear to be heading in the right direction.

we have seen nothing to say the football is NOT headed in the right direction as of yet.. this year will be telling.. but as of right now having a lousy defense, chocked with a bunch of lousy players or talented guys that are just young, isn't a sign that we're headed in the wrong direction.

Maybe that's just because you don't know what you don't know.

Losing to teams you should beat, producing two of the worst defense in school history, zero quality wins after year 3, no improved performance vs the better teams, way to many recruits leaving program, inability to replace players, losing too many games due to coaching ineptness etc etc the list goes on.

So apparently fan perspective and information is all good on the offensive side. It's just a blinder we have on the defense. Cool story bro.

(And I like Blake James so.... Heat. On. )

All the chips are on the table this year. Al needs to put up or start firing underachieving staff. D line and DC are the weaknesses that need to do a 180 this year, or heads must roll.

Take a look at our depth chart. How can anyone argue that the defensive line is going to do a 180.

The talent isn't there and we don't have the quality coaching to make up for deficiencies in talent. Recruiting the DLine, as a whole, has been abysmal, and we're going to feel the repercussions again next season.

And guess what...we're going into the fat guy's FOURTH YEAR. If the depth sucks...it's on him. If certain players haven't gotten better ....it's on him.

The excuses need to stop. The sample size is big enough at this point to conclude the fat guy from Temple is in over his head and underqualified for this position.

who did we lose to that we "should" beat.. and who decides who we should beat? it's not like we lost to FAMU.. or chuck southern.. we lost to a solid duke team, admittedly a BAD VT team (after 3 special teams turnovers), Louisville who had 1 loss, and FSU who had 0 losses.

PLEASE NEG ALL APOLOGIST POST IT'S GETTING SICKENING ON THIS SITE LATELY. The apologist are getting to be way to annoying on this site. I just don't know why they feel the need to blindly support Al. I like Golden but his choices to A) try to leave for Penn State B) Not fire No D is very telling of his career path. If Golden would fire his friend and get a real DC he could save his career and actually win something.

I love how "the fans don't have all the information and don't consider all the factors" yet the coaches constantly cherrypick stats to argue that there's been progress on defense. The information is all there on film for the fans to analyze but I guess we're all wrong, just look at the scoring defense and turnover numbers!

Nobody's buying this propaganda BS so why do they bother? I guess the media will continue to slurp it up because they have to.

Just get over it ....AG aint goin NOWHERE. NO'D aint goin NOWHERE. Accept that shizzle and move on. U gloryhole slurpers kill me.

What I hear is that the AD and the administration hears the complaints about the defense and acknowledges that it has to get fixed.
I also hear that they put the responsibility of fixing it squarely on Al Golden and that all eyes are on him to fix it and that they are watching the progress and that they expect improvement.
It seems they are giving Al a pass on last year but expect improvement as do we all on this site.

Here's hoping we will improve.
GO CANES!!!!!!!!

Exactly. He's put himself on the hot seat by retaining D'Onofrio. His job security after next year is shaky. If we tank, which we very well could, he's gone. I think he's gonna have to win more than 7 to save his job for sure and it will be a borderline call for 6 or 7 wins.

They won 9 games last year. Why would we expect only 6 or 7 w's next year? It's not like the roster is getting less talented. We're still playing in the same bad-to-mediocre coastal. I want to see 10 wins, 9 minimum. 8 wins would put him in the hot seat in my view.

I do too. If it were up to me its at least 9 wins or hes gone. But Im looking from the perspective of how our AD would think. He can maybe reason away an extra year (ie he might not want to pay the buyout). They have a history of being cheap so they might not want to dump him after a 7 win season (even though thats exactly what Shannon did)

LOL at this guy talking about the DL doing a 180. Based on what exactly? The worst DC we've EVER HAD is still running the show.

We're bringing in a ton of inexperienced players.

When we lose to Louisville or Nebraska this team will quit.

Lot of good points here. I think the administration is of the mindset that 7 wins and they might pull a Coker and say, "Fire these assistants or you're fired." I would guess 6 wins and they won't even given him that choice, especially if there's an all-out fan rebellion like with Shannon and the USF game.

As far as being cheap is concerned, that's the biggest hurdle and I don't see them changing that anytime soon. But that's what makes Butch Davis such an attractive option for them if they do fire Golden. They can get him for cheap, it would be popular with basically everybody, wins would very likely follow, attendance would go up, he's proven in the community, revenue would increase, and now Butch wouldn't jump to the NFL because he's too old. Most importantly, if they do fire Golden, they'll hire somebody the fans want because they know fan support is just about gone and they need to make the right hire, not the cheap/safe hire.
