Total Defensive Stats Under Randy Shannon

Not even close in talent - cant see anyone from this year (or last year) starting in front of the 2001 class. In fact most would be 3rd string ---- I know that sounds crazy but on the bench in 2001 was Vince W, S Taylor, A Rolle .... I will stop there

It wasnt just that these teams had NFL talent, these guys went on to START in the NFL and many ended up being all Pro. If players on this current team doubled their output do you see any of them being all pro at the next level? Not even close

+1MM. Your hate of Golden is blurring reality and history.

If Randy was really that great of a defensive coordinator he would colleges and even pro teams begging for his services. He may or may not be a good DC, but the reality is what ncn wrote. Those teams had crazy talent.

Randy was promoted to Senior Associate Head Coach which is next to the HC. So we may never see him as DC as his next move will be another HC job

No you don't, because the caliber of school they are playing at is offset by the caliber of schools they are playing.

Go look at the UVA scheduele when Golden was DC and then rethink this post. They played 3 top ten teams one year. LOL. Smh

Funny, because UVA wasn't that bad back then. If Golden could've fielded a half decent defense while there, they might have been pretty good. Even worse is he had some talented players there on defense. I'd say nearly as much talent as what we had here under Shannon and when Golden took over. Brooks and Long are likely better than anyone we had here in that time period.

The question is about what is a realistic expectation given the team talent they can attract. One could argue the job he did at UVA was very good considering he was doing it at UVA. A top twenty defense there a good job. It is okay for people to acknowledge that They have done good a couple of times.

A top 20 defense is good, but its an outlier for Golden. That's the problem. When this coach is supposed to be a defensive guru, you expect jumps from 100+ ranked defense to maybe top 70 by the next year and maybe even top 50 the next year. Not start at 45, then fall to the 100's and then jump back to 90's. Good coaches maintain some consistency and good coaches consistently get the best out of their underrated players (See VT, TCU, Boise St). These teams are loaded with 3 star or less players and they do just fine in most years.

I don't think you know what an Outlier is or when to know when a data point is one.

Oh another informative thread from the Radio disciples claiming how much better coach he was. Go ******* root for Arkansas. I am not a huge Golden fan. Is he the best coach? No. Great defense. N0. Is the program of Miami better after 4 years with Golden than it was with Radio. You are an idiot if you think not. Radio ran this program into a deeper **** hole than Coker did. And he had someone paying players to come here. Sure he didnt know about it. BUT it did happen under his watch. Is the team where we want it at...**** no but its going in the right direction. The talent seems to be getting better, I think most would agree. But stop posting about what Radios defense did. He is gone. He was given a chance and screwed it up. if Radio had such a great defense then why did he not win more games?

And after all that suckage he produced better than Golden and No D. says it all

No one is choosing Randy over Golden. Speaking for myself, I wanted Randy gone after three years too. Both suck. That is the point.
Everyone agrees Randy sucked. So, one is required to compare Golden's stats to someone who also sucked--Shannon.

To be fair, I reckon we could compare Goldens stats to Jimmy's to see how awesome golden is too?

Once again how many NFL guys did Shannon coach vs Golden.. we love to omit the NFL draft from every measurable of the last horrific 12 years of UM football when it is the ultimate historical metric of this program.. The day Golden coaches as many NFLers as Shannon did, his rankings and records will be comparable if not better. Unfortunately for Golden it is taking a very long time to acquire that caliber of player due to the raging pile of **** Shannon built and left behind...

Randy's problem was he couldn't recruit after that 08 class. Gotta recruit top 5 classes every year to be elite and especially on the DL. Randy had a lot of other problems too, seems like after 08 Nevins duffles were smaller.

Once again, are you saying Shannon had nothing to do w developing that nfl talent on defense?
Are you saying that kids golden had for three seasons just sucked and nothing ANy coach could do would have made them ready for nfl? Are coaches not responsible for developing talent into football players? Can we strip golden of the Muhammad Wilkerson accolades too? After all coaches apparently have nothing to do with developing talent.

And my disclaimer: Randy sucked IMHO. Butch could've turned guys like Bailey and Forston into first rounders. Same w spence and maybe even McCarthy.

So spare us the talent argument in Goldens fourth year. No talent means he is incapable of developing it.

Why are we turning this into a Randy vs Golden argument.Let's just focus on Goldens defenses at 3 diferent schools now and the results have been the same.Awful his first 3-4 years.really as bad as it can get 60s,90s and even 120s,wow. Then once he has experience he has coached 2 top 20 defenses, this is what we hope happens here soon.

How is improving Temple and UVA into top 25 defenses awful?

If you don't know how to interpret stats then steer clear of them.

He's only did it once!

Golden has only fielded two defenses in his career as DC or HC ranked better than 30th in the country.

Given that Temple was one of the worst programs if not the worst when he took it over and it was a blow it up rebuild job what would have expected? For him to start with a Top 30 defense his 1st year with improvements into a top 10 defense by his 2nd and 3rd. AT TEMPLE?
What we have here is that a lot guys on this site lack perspective on things. That's why I don't take you guys seriosly..
Yeah lets bash Golden cause he only fielded a top 20 defense once while at Temple. Oh the horror.. GTFOH
As if the atrocity thats miami defense has nothing to do with it. The breaking of bad records up on records. At this point nothing he did at Temple matters nor is what he was left with. This season will show once and for all who we have here to most. Personally I seen it already. They get bamboozled by inferior teams since the first day they got here. The NCAA crap was just a very timely happening. Head would have rolled already

Are you sure you know what an outlier is or did you just post that to try and look smart? I know what an outlier is and I'm not about to calculate or plot points just to make a point. If it makes you feel better you can call it what you want, but I don't do stats for fun. I'll tell you in the most common terms right now is that you have a set of data points clustered in a general area right now, and then you have 2 top 20's far away from that cluster. The cluster is essentially the average or the norm and these outliers are not.

This, above all else is my biggest concern with Golden.

me too,its a huge concern of any Miami fan to have to hope for your HC to have to develop CFL level talent

Only if you believe only one or the other can be awful.

that comparison wont be apples to apples probably ever, but at least until Miami has more than a 5th and 7th rounder every year

Ooooookay. That's why he only makes $400k after the "promotion"- $100k less than their actual DC. Alex Collins' signing bonus alone was more than Corch's salary.

http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/2014/randy-shannon-salary/

He did not want to be a coordinator because he is looking to be a head coach after next season. It was stated that he did not want to commit to a coordinator position if he was not going to be their long term. He probably gets a shot at a med tier program next season. He should do well

The reason why RS can't get a DC gig is because he **** the bed so badly as HC no one will hire him. He also has the reputation of be very abrasive and a bit if an *******.

If he wanted a coordinator position there are plenty of school who would gladly take his services. Heck, we could use his services right now

what is?

His development of talent. He has had a couple guys at each stop it seems, but at times I feel like all our guys are just getting bigger and not necessarily better. No I don't have any facts to back that up, just my opinion from what I've seen. With the recruiting classes we've had since he's been here, I would be disappointed if we don't have at least a second rounder next year and assuming he's still here the following year at least 1 first rounder. I feel like the best guys on this team are the ones who looked like something special from day 1. I'm waiting to see a guy who was a project on day 1 and left here a stud.
