Total Defensive Stats Under Randy Shannon

Imagine if Randy Shannon didn't get fired...... Teddy Bridgewater would be our QB, along with Eli Rodgers at WR.

Do you think things would have been turned around?

People say that but didn't Eli already decommit and Teddy had one foot out the door. Shannon was a disaster and each season his recruiting got exponentially worse. As far as DC and philosophy give me Shannons all day but I think even his is to simple for the way the game is played now and its a big reason he hasn't gotten a job as DC and was even passed over at Arkansas.

How about comparing Shannon's 2010 defense to Goldens 2011 defense since they coached most of the same players over those two years.

Sure. Departing players from 2010 Brandon Harris, DVD, Ryan Hill, Allen Baily, Colin McCarthy, replaced by Chickillo, Futch, Gaines, Mike Williams, Finnie.
A quick look and it's safe to say that the departing players weren't replaced with better or more experienced players.

Stats.
PPG - 2010 (20.7) 2011 (20.1)
Rush Yard per per attempt 2010 (4.11) 2011 (4.11)
Pass Yard per per attempt 2010 (5.98) 2011 (7.54)
Total Yards per play 2010 (4.81) 2011 (5.48)
3rd down Conversion Opponents (34.85%) 2011 (41.1%)

Some surprises. Points per game favors 2011. Rushing yards per attempt is equal..
Pass defense was worse but it should be expected when you lose 3 starters 2 of which were drafted and replaced by guys like Lee Chambers, Mike Williams and true freshman in Finnie. Plus Ray Ray was suspended for 4 games.

add to this that 2010 defense the majority of players had a few seasons under their belt playing in this defense compared to 2011 which had no seasons playing in a different system plus the suspensions to guys like Ray Ray and Oliver for half the season and I don't think anyone that is objective can look at this and say that the 2010 defense performed relatively better than the 2011 defense.
And I'm not even going to mention the loss of guys like Forston and Buchannon early in the year.

That's more life and energy in this little clip than Shannon showed during his entire 4 years as head coach.

Some guys are meant to be 1's, some guys are meant to be 2's, and some guys are not meant to be in the discussion. Golden is meant to be a number one and Shannon a number two while Onofrio is meant to be not mentioned at all.
Perfect Dream Staff for our beloved U:
Golden as HC (one of the best recruiters and good motivator)
Shannon comes back as DC (more aggressive scheme, good recruiter especially in SoFla);
Don Julio James Coley as OC (great recruiter and excited to see what his O is going to do);
The God-Father Hurlie Brown as LB Coach (nuff said about his recruiting abilities);
Ken Dorsey as QB Coach O Quality Control;
Ice-Harris as RB Coach (the myth-the legend of HS football in SoFla);
Mike Rumph as DB coach;
Beard and Baez overseeing all recruiting events;
Brennan Carroll as WR coach.
This is called "Eye in the Sky" so a fan can only wish this would be our staff in 2015-2016.

LMAO

Golden is not a good recruiter? Have you seen our class ranking since he's been here vs. before he got here? Have you not seen our 2016 class thus far?

You didn't say good, you said one of the best. He is decent to good, but won't be considered elite till he stops having misses at the number one position on his defense, DT's.

2016? Are you ****ing serious. No one gets credit for 2 years down the road. We were supposed to have top 5 class last year, you saw how that turned out.

Touche. We were supposed to have a top 5 class, but fizzled out. Look, I don't think the world of Golden, but he did inherit crap. Unlike under Randy's watch, our win total has increased every year. Our talent level has increased w/ every class. He was doing everything w/ hand tied behind of his back b/c Randy and the University allowed Nevin to run wild throughout our campus. Give the guy some credit. Also, he's composing one of the best recruiting staffs in the nation.

Why are we bringing up the worst coach in the history of the program.. That set this program back years... Hopefully al can get us back on track

Golden, to date, has won exactly one more game than Shannon. So by your own standards, our current corch is also a pathetic clown? laff laff laff

The question is about what is a realistic expectation given the team talent they can attract. One could argue the job he did at UVA was veryD good considering he was doing it at UVA. A top twenty defense there a good job. It is okay for people to acknowledge that They have done good a couple of times.

A top 20 defense is good, but its an outlier for Golden. That's the problem. When this coach is supposed to be a defensive guru, you expect jumps from 100+ ranked defense to maybe top 70 by the next year and maybe even top 50 the next year. Not start at 45, then fall to the 100's and then jump back to 90's. Good coaches maintain some consistency and good coaches consistently get the best out of their underrated players (See VT, TCU, Boise St). These teams are loaded with 3 star or less players and they do just fine in most years.

I don't think you know what an Outlier is or when to know when a data point is one.

Are you sure you know what an outlier is or did you just post that to try and look smart? I know what an outlier is and I'm not about to calculate or plot points just to make a point. If it makes you feel better you can call it what you want, but I don't do stats for fun. I'll tell you in the most common terms right now is that you have a set of data points clustered in a general area right now, and then you have 2 top 20's far away from that cluster. The cluster is essentially the average or the norm and these outliers are not.

You Must Not Have Been Paying Attention In Your Statistics Class. I Can Point To A Few Reasons Why Those Top 20 Rankings Aren't Outliers. Easiest Being They Fall Between A Normal Distribution. There Is A Formula You can Use To Determine If Data Points Fall Outside The range .
Second One Being When You Have A Linear Progression That Follows A Trend You Would Be Hard Pressed To Find Any Statistician That Would Remove Those Data Points That You incorrectly Think Are Far From Their Cluster. There Are More Reasons Like Applicability Since Rankings Are Not Random Occurrences . You Can Argue That If You Are Going To Remove AnY Rankings It Would Be The Ones From His First Year Since A Lot Of Factors Outside The Control Of The DC Heavily Influence Results.

Yes, I know this. Again, I also said I'm not doing stats for fun. Here is a simple picture for you though just to give people a visual based on the numbers provided in the OP. Randy has a pretty nice tight cluster and its fairly easy to determine what we'll be close to each year. Golden is all over the place. I guess you're right it's not an outlier, but based on Golden's results, we may be destined to live in the 60-80 range.

Like I said, I'm rooting for him, but I have very little faith at this point.
