Time to Dial Back the Luke Nickel Love?

But plenty had the expectation that he would overtake Emory or even force Emory to transfer in the spring. And you can tell me its still too early, but if he was ready for something like that, he wouldn't be throwing to walk-ons.

That was way more of a mass indictment of Emory than it was people thinking Nickel was a savior.

If they announced Sebastian the Ibis was walking on as a QB, 80% of this board would’ve said he’d overtake Emory (and Judd for that matter) by the end of spring.

After that Bowl Game, Sebastian the Ibis would have had a better reception than Emory.

Emory is a better QB than that awful second half against Iowa State. But our D couldn't stop a squad of cheerleaders last season, so you can see why people were grasping at straws for instant salvation like Luke Nickel now that Cam is out of the picture. We had to compensate for what we thought was going to be a middling D this year and marginal improvements in the offense without Cam Ward.

Cristobal's recruiting and Portal strategy appears to be paying off, so Nickel won't have to worry about burning a shirt or serious playing time until year 3, when he should be expected to start. By then, he'll have accumulated plenty of time on the field and in the film room (in the weight room, as well). The key is, they don't have to throw him on the field the way Golden did with Kaaya. I think that will work out to the young man's benefit.

I sure hope this post doesn’t kill Nickel’s confidence.

You seem to be very worked up over something I said that isn't particularly controversial. Before we got Beck, there were full blown threads on here asking if we should just roll with Nickel and settle for 7-8 wins...and plenty of people agreed!

I asked if maybe we should dial that back. Feels like fair game to me.

It is really early (as I noted in my original post) but I think if he was good enough to start, there would be more buzz and he sure as **** wouldn't be throwing to the walk-ons. No way Keelon Russell is doing that at Alabama.

And if you think the best 19 quarterback recruits in the country should all be considered "elite", then you and I got different definitions of the word my guy.

Yes, because Emory and Judd were just that bad.

If you can't comprehend that, you should just move over to the F$U and Gator sites. They would LOVE your brand of stupidity and stubbornness over there.

Luke is not ready. That’s why I laughed when people said he would start this year. Way too early to bash the kid.

What people need to be upset about is how Mario and his sidekick evaluated Emory and Judd then decided to make them part of the team. I don’t care if Dawson wanted them, we fumbled in the QB recruiting.

Once Emory leaves next month, we will need to look again in case Beck goes down.

OP is ready to call it quits on a guy who has had 7 practices. Total.

OP also quotes David Lake’s podcast.

David Lake’s podcast has done nothing but tell us how awesome Emory Williams was. I’m going to take the five minutes of quarterback warmups he watches with a grain of salt.

I don’t think anyone expected Luke Nickel to be ready to play this year, let alone after 7 spring practices. There’s a reason we got Carson Beck.

Emory was a Frank Ponce recruit.

That’s why FIU is a very likely destination for Emory next month but that doesn’t change the fact Dawson was on Emory train, and Mario approved everything.
Four quarterbacks have been recruited to Miami by Shanon Dawson. Judd Anderson was the first. Then Cam Ward, Luke Nickel and Carson Beck.

I don’t think anyone was ever on the Emory Train. Just look at the play calling every time he played outside of mop up up duty. You’re usually not actively shopping for transfer starting quarterbacks if you like the guy you already have.

Nickel an early enrollee true freshman who should still be in high school. Can he get acclimated to the speed of the college game and find his niche before we down the kid?
A lot of folks crowned Kyle Wright and Robert Marve before they did a thing here...let the kid learn and let the game slow down for him then get some game experience before we bypass what he brings

I think this is kind of the same point that I am trying to make. Many around here were ready to anoint him the backup before he even stepped on campus. And there were plenty of takes calling him the "QB of the Future".

I am not saying he stinks, I am just saying maybe we dial back the praise as it looks like Emory is clearly still the better option (as he should be).
You do realize that the media only gets to see about 40 min of each practice and one of them was already closed to media right. I mean it is you who is jumping to conclusions over info that isn't even complete. LOL

This was my take as well. Of course he can grow into an excellent talent, but he's just your average freshman quarterback right now and I would feel more comfortable with Emory as a backup. Which is okay!
Yeah after watching him blow through one of the toughest football states and then go almost perfect in the state final I sat back and said "Yeah I'm just not impressed" LOL

OMG we have some of the worst posters ever on this board. We got one guy saying our Freshman QB who has basically just moved in and started practicing a month ago is a bust and another one saying a kid (who I like a lot as a QB) who got out played by our Freshman WR who had to play QB is better than Nickel right now. WOW

I thought Grassy had some bad posters but CIS is on a whole other level.

Emory wasn’t supposed to be the only qb recruit in that. Losing Rashada forced that situation. Not saying things would’ve been different. QB recruiting is such a hit and miss thing. 3/4 of the QBs who played in the semis of the CFP were transfers. Look at the top 10 QB recruits in 2023, Emory’s class, only 4 are at the school they signed with.

It’s just the reality of today’s game. Odds are against your HS recruit hitting. You have to be able to work the portal. Again, I’m not saying taking just Emory was the smart or correct move. But odds are we would’ve been in the same situation we are now if Mario landed more heralded prospects in HS recruiting.
