Miami is going portal shopping again next year, we’re in win now mode
Though talent he owns and dreams that gleam,I get it. This is a hater take. But are we finally ready to admit that we all anointed Luke Nickel as the savior way too soon?
Sure, it is still super early in his first Spring Camp and sure, he is super young and there is plenty of time for him to improve. But most of this fanbase was ready to call him the definite backup and QB of the future before he even stepped foot on campus. Now that he has been on campus, reading between the lines, there has been a lot of "well let's see him with better receivers" and "I think he still needs to adjust to the speed" and "its still early".
Through The Smoke went as far as to say that they don't think Miami's future starter is on the roster currently.
Of course I want to see him succeed and become an All-American and call me a hater if you want, but while we are all sitting here pumping Dereon Coleman's tires, I think it is worth trying to have a little perspective about our expectations. We all moaned about how Nickel deserved a fourth star and it sure sounds like after seeing him in practice that he was probably ranked correctly.
Coleman is a completely different player so perhaps I am comparing apples to oranges, but for me, this only cements that we should be on the Portal QB train every season so long as the good options are available.

Honest question, do they really practice as 1s and 2s and 3s this early in Spring Camp? Is that the explanation for why he only gets to throw to the walk-ons and not a mix of everyone?Aside from the last two (I've been out of town), I've seen every single practice for the non-media portion.
It is way too early to have any kind of opinion of Luke Nickel. He's been throwing almost exclusively to walk-ons. I'm looking forward to see him throw to some of our talented young receivers.
This is what confuses me too! I am sure there is a logical rationale and I asked DMoney in a separate post, but I don't get why he doesn't get reps with other receivers as well.I find it odd he's one of three healthy QBs on the roster and is throwing to "almost exclusively" walk-ons. We saw how awful Emory was in the bowl and we know Judd is a major project. Seems like Nickel would be getting lots of reps with the WRs since we're now beyond the halfway point of spring practice.
This is my perfect scenario as well, Under Mario I believe we can land an Impact QB in the portal if there's one to be had, Cam has done wonders for us in terms of Talented portal Qbs looking to raise their stock a la Riley @ Oklahoma. The sky is the limit for Coleman though, is just looks diff when he spins that ball.I know Dawson seems to really like Judd and that’s fine
I’d just like to see a scenario where we have Beck, portal, Luke
Then next year Portal, Luke, Coleman and if somehow Luke or Coleman truly are elite then maybe scrap the portal option
Sure but savior is a bit of a stretchAre we not allowed to expect good things from a blue-chip, Top 250 overall recruit?
Spot onI'm convinced a significant chunk of our fanbase actively hates the program and wants to see it fail, just because failure is more entertaining to them than anything else. Luke Nickel is a TRUE FRESHMAN, in his FIRST spring camp. Never mind the fact that he should be worrying about who he's taking to prom right now, not dealing with college classes, and adjusting to a college program.
Drawing conclusions based on a couple of weeks of practice in SPRING is a bit weird, especially seeing how we don't even know how the roster will look in a month, much less in the fall.
He's probably the best QB on the roster not named BeckBro. He might not be an NFL QB, but I bet he would be solid in college!
You seem to be very worked up over something I said that isn't particularly controversial. Before we got Beck, there were full blown threads on here asking if we should just roll with Nickel and settle for 7-8 wins...and plenty of people agreed!Stop digging a deeper grave for yourself.
Lake has been at which practices, exactly? The 7 in shells? Whoopty-*******-doo.
And if we are indicting Emory and Judd, it will be based on two prior years of experience and play (Emory) or one prior year of experience and play (Judd). Not just ONE practice in pads.
Nobody has said "Nickel is clearly behind both of them". But that's where true freshmen start out. When he's had, say, more than ONE practice in pads to move ahead of Emory and Judd, then he can do so. But not based on "hype" or "star ratings". I'd prefer for Nickel to beat out Emory and Judd based on performance.
ONE PRACTICE in pads. Oh, but we should take what David Lake says as Gospel.
Get the **** out of here.
And I'm not sure why YOU have deemed him to be a "non-elite high school quarterback". Nickel was named Mr. Georgia Football. And as for the nonsense about him being a 3-star, he is a:
4-star on on3 (#100 overall, #11 QB)
4-star on 247 (#247 overall, #16 QB)
4-star on ESPN (#299 overall, #17 QB)
4-star on Rivals (#16 QB)
Consensus/composite 4-star (#230 overall, #19 QB)
YupI’ve said many times if you can go ahead and find a good high school QB that loves the U and doesn’t play any games or gets into bag wars then go get that kid (Nickel and Coleman seem that way)
But just to pay up for a portal QB every year or plan to
Not all of us were high on Luke Nickel, I never saw him as starter potential until year 3 minimumYou seem to be very worked up over something I said that isn't particularly controversial. Before we got Beck, there were full blown threads on here asking if we should just roll with Nickel and settle for 7-8 wins...and plenty of people agreed!
I asked if maybe we should dial that back. Feels like fair game to me.
It is really early (as I noted in my original post) but I think if he was good enough to start, there would be more buzz and he sure as **** wouldn't be throwing to the walk-ons. No way Keelon Russell is doing that at Alabama.
And if you think the best 19 quarterback recruits in the country should all be considered "elite", then you and I got different definitions of the word my guy.
At least you're honestFor sure man, I am sitting at my desk, avoiding work, plotting Nickel's downfall.
Sure but savior is a bit of a stretch
This was my take as well. Of course he can grow into an excellent talent, but he's just your average freshman quarterback right now and I would feel more comfortable with Emory as a backup. Which is okay! Not all of us were high on Luke Nickel, I never saw him as starter potential until year 3 minimum
But plenty had the expectation that he would overtake Emory or even force Emory to transfer in the spring. And you can tell me its still too early, but if he was ready for something like that, he wouldn't be throwing to walk-ons.If you’re calling any recruit a “savior” in the spring of their freshman year, might wanna look in the mirror.
Recruiting and paying QBs is wild these days. Even the top programs are having troubleYup
If Luke or DC are the goods they will know in practice. If they hit the portal for a qb you already know what they think of them. Actions speak louder than media interviews.
Exactly that's why i was confused OP said everybody here called him the savior, like who tf called him THAT? maybe one or two clueless mfs but ALL of us is crazyIf you’re calling any recruit a “savior” in the spring of their freshman year, might wanna look in the mirror.
I remember Mario talking about Penei Sewell or CiCi Mauigoa that he told them all freshman come in and have to earn their role, it took them 3 practices to go from 3rd string to 1st stringHonest question, do they really practice as 1s and 2s and 3s this early in Spring Camp? Is that the explanation for why he only gets to throw to the walk-ons and not a mix of everyone?
