It's a scheme issue
I was a D'onofrio supporter but i see the big picture now....
you cant have a DC who strongly believes that "yards allowed" doesnt matter only scoring defense and expect to ever have an "elite" defense.
I wouldnt mind if D'onofrio left for a HC job after this season.
Exactly. This is what people keep missing. Going into the FSU game, most believed to win the game we needed to control the clock and run the ball. Why, because they have more talent than we do at the moment. To shorten the game and control the clock is universally recognized as the way to beat a superior team talent wise. Along with a few breaks and turnovers.
Well this same game plan is what less talented teams use against us. Some do it with the run, others with the short passing game. But both can be VERY effective against our style of bend don't break defense. We are doing EXACTLY what they want us to do. Were playing right into their hands.
That is the reason we play these close games until late in the 4th with NC, Wake, GT...etc. That and our own stupid turnovers. These teams are content to take 5 yards, 8 yards, 3 yards. Why, because it chews up clock and keeps OUR explosive offense on the sideline. We allow them to stay close, instead of attacking and pressing the issue. We should make their inferior athletes make plays against our superior ones.
But remember yards don't matter! lol Our offense is sitting on the sideline for 5 to 8 minutes at a time. No wonder they are cold as **** and go three and out. Or defensive philosophy never allows them to get in a rhythm and get a feel for what the opposing defense is trying to do.
And before I get the talent argument. Even with RS sleeping at the wheel in 2009, 2010 and 2011, we still have better players than every team on our schedule other that FSU. FL only has more talent than us on the defensive side of the ball.
And you really believe our d talent is better than VT, who I believe is in the top 5 defensively. 31>5?
Guys are delusional. Let them be. They want to talk about talent like talent lives in a vacuum. Look at a guy like Brandon McGee. He was "talented" from the day he set foot on campus. He wasn't a good football player until 4 years later. This talent fantasy world stuff is living in the past. How talented is our starting D? Go down the list:
1. Renfrow--cast off from a sht team UVA. Journeyman player at his best.
2. Chick--good quality player without much physical talent. A try-hard guy.
3. Pierre-a 2 star Temple level talent who nobody wanted.
4. Shayon--another try-hard guy playing on duct taped knees with very limited athletic ability
5. Cornileus--weak player with no explosive athletic talent.
6. Gaines--2 star player who no one wanted. Another try-hard guy with a great attitude and very limited ability.
7. Perryman--legit player. Could play on and excel on any team in the country.
8. AJ--would be a backup on an FCS team. Enough said.
9. Jenkins--legit player coming into his own as a sophomore. Will only get better.
10. Tracy--legit player. Future star.
11. Gunter--legit player. Limited physically, but makes up for it with smarts and football savvy.
Where is all this talent everyone is crowing about?
