The Truth about the Defense - For those who say it's talent

After what we all saw last year, and considering the caliber of talent to go along with all of that 'experience', you may want to temper those expectations a bit...or a lot.

How did VT get all that talent? most of their talent are 2 and 3 star kids with a couple of 4 stars and 1 Five star.

I don't give a ***** about Vag Tech. The only thing I know is that we probably have only two guys who could play defense for them.

Yeah but why are they an elite defense? while we make every QB look good?

FWIW they have been recruiting for their system for 10+ years, every player there on D was recruited to fit their system. We have been recruiting to our system for 2, those kids are FR and SO. Pretty large difference.

It is worth nothing.

VT has a system aka a machine in place and all they need to do is update the parts. The system will keep chugging along as long as they find the right parts for their system.

The reason that VT has lost a step is because they lost that other piece their system requires....a RB. The last stud they had was David Wilson, they lost him and had no replacement ever since.

The fact that logic, reality and truth are apparent in the improvement of the program, players and coaching staff, many continue to look for fault instead of accomplishment, and are unwilling to accept that which is obvious. Improvement to a football program that has encountered the circumstances and events of the past 10 years takes time, patience and continuity and will only occur with top shelf recruiting and winning. To some the glass will always be half empty until we have another NC.

Golden's record through 32 games: 20-12

Randy's record through 32 games: 17-15

How much longer until we can expect to start seeing a big difference on the field?

And you claim not to have an agenda??? LOL Maybe if Al didn't have to trot out the regurgitated remains of Randy's stellar roster management strategy over the last 32 games his record would be a little better. What a dumbarse post.

I see us going down to the wire against bad ACC teams. Getting blown out by great ACC teams. Nothing much has changed ON THE FIELD.

At 7-1 we are seeing the difference. And we are young and improving. Randy only won 7 games his last year and his losses were not to powerhouse NC contenders, but jags. And all could see we were headed deeper and deeper in mediocrity. If you don't already see the difference on the field, on the recruiting trail, and in the trajectory of the program, it's because you don't want to.

I don't already see the difference on the field, aside from actually winnng these close games against bad ACC teams, which is great. But I see a worse defense than the one we had in 2010 and an offense with no ingenuity. Is it because we aren't as talented as we'll probably be in a couple years? Probably. Should I expect that we should be looking a tad better than we have these last few weeks (in which we could have easily lost 3 games)? Yes, I did think we would look better than we do currently, but maybe my expectations were out of kilter.

Seriously?

First you pluralized ACC Teams. Who are the ACC teams that blew us out this year? We know FSU. Not sure any of the others did.

Second, your right nothing has changed in ACC play. We're weak in the 4th quarter (how many 4th quarter wins?), the defense isn't keeping points of the board all the while our offense has turned it over twice as much.

Here is our defense from last year and this year (through 4 games in the ACC)

2012: GT, UNC, FSU and NCState* (3 Home Games v. 1 Road Game)

Avg Points Per Game: 31
Total Yards Per Game: 504
Passing Yards Per Game: 254
Rushing Yards Per Game: 250
Total Offensive Turnovers: 5
TOP (How Long Our Defense is on the Field): 31.8

Overall Record: 2-2

2013: GT, UNC, FSU and WF* (2 Home Games v. 2 Road Games)

Avg Points Per Game: 28.75
Total Yards Per Game: 448
Passing Yards Per Game: 272
Rushing Yards Per Game: 173
Total Offensive Turnovers: 10
TOP (How Long Our Defense is on the Field):34.2

Overall Record: 3-1

-------------------------------
2012 v 2013

Points Are Down: 2.25 Per Game
Total Yards Are Down: 56 Yards Per Game
Passing Yards Are Up: 18 Yards Per Game
Rushing Yards Are Down: 77 Yards Per Game
Plus we have 5 more turnovers on offense
Our defense is playing more this year: 2.4 Minutes Per Game

What does this mean? Not only are points and yards down from last year, the defense is suffering more because they are on the field longer. Due to the 10 turnovers that our offense was nice enough to give to the defense, they are playing more but still keeping the points off the board. This is only a midway report. After the next 4 ACC games we will finalize these statistics to see if the defense improved.

*We play WF and Pitt this year instead of NCState and BC*

Finally, things are really different. I see a team that is winning the games we used to lose. I see a team that is able to play physical football for 4 quarters. What do you see?

I see a team that has underachieved the last few weeks. Again, winning those close games against UNC and Wake felt great, but we'd all be singing a different tune had the outcomes been slightly different. Everything isn't okay. This staff might not be perfect. We still don't know if they can make us elite again. They deserve all the time they need, but either the recruiting needs to improve, or the coaching needs to improve. Something's gotta give because we're 32 games deep since this staff arrived and we're not exactly clicking on all cyclinders.

Good post ,I haven't looked at the team from that perspective. Winning those close games does develop some character, but those were not elite temas . These next three weeks will tell me a lot about the team and the coaching.I just am not a fan of that bend but don't break defense. We have some pieces on defense to work with imho!

But we did win. That is the difference. This is a big difference. We won because we are not backing down and are physically stronger than the other teams. We won because of defense and our running game. The defense was not there last year (as evidenced above)

I agree that everything isn't okay. We just lost our playmaker (Duke). Our QB has thrown 8 interceptions in ACC play (that is two a game), we also had two fumbles lost against GT. If we are going to turn the ball over 2.5 times per game expect very close games. If our field goal kicker is going to miss FGs expect a very close game. Now that Duke is gone, expect our offense to not score as many points.

As for being elite, I don't expect to be elite this year. I expected improvement and that is evident. I expected 9-10 wins during the regular season and we're on pace for that.

The recruiting has been pretty good given what we were handed, here is our future (2012 + 2013 Class)

CB: Howard, Gunter, Burns and Crawford
S: Bush, Jenkins and Carter
LB: Figs, Kirby and Grace
DT: (there is a void)
DE: AQM and McCord

QB: Olsen
RB: Duke (I have faith in Edwards but won't put him here)
WR: Coley and Waters
OL: Flowers (watch for Knighton, Gall and Isadora)
TE: Sandland and Dobard

I think this was all with the BS we were dealing with the NCAA. I believe recruiting will only get better. Look at the 2014 class, it will be interesting to see how we close now that the cloud is gone and the class is pretty darn good to begin with.

Finally, 32 games deep. This is more BS, this is equivalent to your 3 deep stat yesterday. I will play along as if this is some relevant measuring stick.

Guess who I am, after 32 games as a HC at my second program my record was 14-18. Name that coach.

That's a pretty big difference, no?

Beating UF.ag? I don't see any team we've put on the field for the last 6-8 years that would've beaten any UF.ag team in the same time frame. That's got to be considered progress, no?

Yeah, I think your expectations are definitely out of kilter with reality.

25 of the 33 players who comprise the 3-deep depth chart are guys who have been selected by Al Golden to represent the University of Miami football team.

The only eight players who are not "Golden guys":

Green
Robinson
Porter
Gaines
Cornelius
Cain
Rodgers
Highsmith

Dorito. Must. Go.

Ironically the players that are not "Golden" guys are the ones that suck the most...i.e. the eight players you mentioned minus green.

If guys like Shayon and Gaines and Porter and Cornelius and Highsmith are so bad then where are their replacements? It's been three years. We need to recruit better.

Their replacements are 18 and 19 year old kids, who we were lucky enough to convince to come here despite not knowing if they'd ever get to play in a bowl game, or if the program would even exist by the time they graduated.

Two of the safety replacements are Rodgers (injured) and Bush (recovering from surgery).

We absolutely need to recruit better

Glad to hear you say this. One could conclude from your original post that because players are "golden's guys" they are elite. Yes, Golden hand selected the best of what was available to him, but up until this year what was available to him was not that great (outside of the first 5 or so, and you need more than that per class to put together a team). Now that he is fielding talented and deep classes I expect things to change.
