The OC Candidates Thread

Honestly he aligns with what Mario wants as far as prioritizing the run and he isn’t in the stone ages in terms of philosophy either. Baylor’s O last year with him there in year 1 was balanced and fun to watch and PUT UP POINTS and finished with a top 40 scoring offense. Even though their team isn’t as good this year overall, their scoring offense has improved in year 2 with a new QB scoring 34+ a game. Probably best case realistic scenario in terms of style and he does more with less consistently. I’m sure we can pay him more than what he is making at Baylor but he has an OL background too, so idk the mesh there with Mirabal but I wouldn’t be upset with that at all. His offenses at BYU put up tons of points as well and it’s not like BYU had athletes.

I know we all want the Garrett Riley’s of the world but that isn’t ever happening under Mario guys. I think Grimes would be good. He has done more with less and runs well coached units that are effiicient and put up points. He doesn’t have much of a recruiting rep IIRC but we need more coaches less recruiters. Bottomline, he should definitely get a call.

Herman is the dream. Briles is a no brainer IMO but after that fiasco last year I doubt the wheels get spun there again. Mullen is someone I have screamed for that I think would turn this O around quick and I would give Longo a call as well just because but Grimes is up there for me too. Again, I’m only naming guys that I think would be realistic. Grimes isn’t an A+ hire like Herman would be but he is a proven guy that has done it on his own at several spots and RECENTLY. Baylor was big 12 champs last year with Aranda who is a defensive guy that gave the keys to Grimes and they got it done. This year the unit is even better and he does it with recruits that rank near the bottom of his respective conference. Call that man and see if he is interested.

"In 2021 Grimes, a native of Garland, Texas, brought his “RVO” philosophy to Waco. The “Reliable Violent Offense” is an attacking, multiple-formation offense that runs a few plays in many ways with as much misdirection as any team in the country." - Simplicity is what we need. Not an NFL scheme that the players cant grasp and execute.

"Prior to coming to Baylor, Grimes directed a high-powered offense at BYU in 2020 that finished its season ranked in the top-15 of 10 different statistical categories, including scoring (3rd, 43.5 ppg), total offense (7th, 522.2 ypg) and passing offense (8th, 332.1 ppg).

With Grimes at the helm, the 2020 BYU Cougars tied for the national lead in yards per play at 7.84, and led all of FBS in plays of 30 or more yards with 45. Overall, BYU scored 40 or more points nine times in 12 games." -
This is at BYU guys. Can anyone outside of LCE name one skill player from BYU off the top of their head? I **** sure can't. Yes, they had Zach Wilson but he maximized his QB talent and had BYU rolling and he is maximizing the offensive talent at Baylor too. Imagine what he’d do with TVD? He is proven and outside of having ZW he has done MORE WITH LESS.
I am huge grimes fan. I even have Baylors offensive 2021 offensive playbook lol. I love the way he uses tightends and incorporates his running scheme. Dude is an oline coach also. I know he's waiting for a HC job. I doubt he would leave Baylor under Aranda. They got something good going on over there.

Agree, I think he should be considered. He is a former OL too, he loves to run the ball and his BYU offenses were legit. He's doing well at Baylor and could be a potential candidate for some smaller HC openings.

I hadn’t reviewed Grimes, but am now sold

And for the Gattis slurpers, Dave Arranda fired Larry Fedora after 1yr, so it’s more common than you think to change coordinators when they disappoint

If we tried to run this, our OL would slip and fall 6/10 attempts in practice and have it removed from the effective playbook lol

His stache sells itself

Grimes is a great OC. He wouldn’t leave Baylor for us though because he’s got a nice qb who’s young and he runs the show there. Aranda (who is a an awesome coach) is a defense guy and lets Jeff do his thing. Would not be the case here. Plus he’s an OL guy and we’ve got two of those already. I’d love him here though. Plus Baylor with Texas and ou leaving could be poised to be one of the top big12 teams as they really already are

I think many of you seem to forget that its a lot harder than you think to pluck a guy out of the midwest, that is on a HC trajectory, and bring him to south Florida on a lateral move. Grimes is unique because he has been somewhat of a journeyman. Having spent time literally all over the power five.

Garret Riley doesnt have any reason to come to South Florida (besides $$$), and I think he is going to get plenty of it when his next job is a HC.

Golesh? I understand he's at Tennessee, and that is mostly Heupels offense, but if he decides to ride the momentum, he's going back to the midwest.

Id be interested to see if Dillingham stay out west.

Guidugli is another interesting guy, who has face some adversity within his personnel, but yet still puts together some good looking offenses.

Yeah, would be tough to pull him out of Texas especially to Miami.

if grimes wants his own OL guy, see ya mirabal. hes not irreplaceable esp as long as mario is here. move AM to off field analyst and pay him under the table for all i care. getting a new OC that is top tier is more important than friendships with ponce and mirabal.

Was really impressed with him. That run scheme is pretty innovative

Agree. But I meant it more as a “not gonna happen”

Probably, lol. I didn’t think about that. If Jimbo was smart, yes.
Over Garrett Riley who is also in their backyard? I feel like getting Grimes may be the smarter hire but I'd be surprised if A&M boosters would be comfortable with that style offense. Probably too similar to Jimbo.

They'd probably want the splashy hire which would be Riley. Baylor is like 45th in yards per play and 29th in scoring offense. Good stats but TCU is basically top 10 in every major offensive staff.

Reminds me of Miami going the Rhett route. A&M has a stale boring offense that hasn't been good in decades and is in desperation mode for an innovate spread offense that can put up points.

I don’t disagree.
If I am TAMU I am writing a blank check to either one of them. If Riley turns that O around without being under Dykes shadow, he is an HC in 2 years.

That’s my worry on Riley, how does he do without having Dykes.
Exactly. Is he too green to take on that tamu job? That’s gonna be a pressure cooker job man. He will be looked at as the savior there and jimbo will be watching over his shoulder the whole time and not respecting him since he’s forced to have him
