There’s no such thing as a “whole story stat.”

Analytic rankings are the only stats that attempt to do it to the extent it can be done.

Nope, but consistently high annual points per game sure do tell you they are doing something right.

Love some defense but outscoring others is the name of the CFB game nowadays, and that's the only stat that matters, the final score.

Shannon Dawson offense (w/o Dana)

2015:

OF+ - 77th

PPG - 93rd

YPG - 115th

YPP - 106th

explosive plays - 97th

2018:

OF+ - 123rd

PPG - 98th

YPG - 106th

YPP - 87th

explosive plays - 113th

He had a good offense in 2016 at Southern miss if I remember right with Nick Mullens

Taggert called the plays in what you are calling Arroyo's first season (as Co-OC). As the OC calling plays, he inherited the 41st ranked OF+, maintained in at 41 his first season as playcalling OC, then improved it into the top 20 in his second season.

And it seems you are suggesting elite talent, at least at QB, can provide additional, relevant context not included in OF+? That's interesting. Does the converse hold true? Does subpar talent at QB provide additional, relevant context for a poor OF+ rating? And does "elite talent" at other positions provide further relevant context on OF+ (or just QB)? And if so, does the converse (subpar talent) also provide additional, relevant context?

lets pretend what you’re saying is correct.

He was given the 41st ranked offense was a superstar at QB that was now an upperclassman, and did nothing with it?

And yeah, I think context is always helpful.

I think at some point it becomes silly. Like if there’s always an excuse, and that excuse is always outside of your control.

But I think starting with a baseline metric is good. And seeing if there are things might explain outliers is helpful.

What would you expect to annually score per game against defenses that average out to say 80th ranked defense overall?

Or better yet, what do you think a *bad* defense would average against that?

Actually they do.

That’s the point of them. They attempt to tell the whole story, but adding context. And that’s what context is, it’s story telling.

“Yards” doesn’t tell the whole story. It literally just tells you yards.

They tell more of a story but you do have to use some critical thinking. Things like changing offensive schemes could have a noticeable impact initially.

As long as the OC hire is solid to meh, if Guidry's defense can put us in scoring position enough times it'll make the OC a rockstar. The OC hire doesn't have to be awe-inspiring (I wish it would be but them's the breaks in tuff n fizzicull land.) Just get us in the ****** endzone dude. That's all I'm worried about. Gattis couldn't ever finish (pause)

Johns and Littrell have been my guys. Spencer Whipple if it were a young up and comer. And that’s big because he’s a Cane , he’s very well respected around the NFL. He’s viewed as a future star.
Scared abt Whipple’s expirence for us, only ever called one game

We just need an OC who can wring the head off the chicken while Guidry's D holds them down..

Dawson as OC:

WVU:

2013: 84
2014: 56

Kentucky:

2015: 77

Southern Miss:

2016: 75
2017: 100
2018: 123

Houston:

2020: 62
2021: 58
2022: 23

He has one Top 50 offense in his entire career. And that’s if you believe Dana didn’t take the reigns over in 2022.

Is the argument that every coach he has ever had has refused to allow Dawson to run Dawson’s offense?
